If California Legalizes Pot, The Feds Might Sue: Boy, The Obama Administration Really Doesn't Want Us To Vote For Prop. 19

Up In Smoke
The U.S. drug czar is sounding a little like Sgt. Stedenko to us.
Just because California might legalize pot doesn't mean that enforcement against the drug will go up in smoke.

Nope. In fact President Obama's drug czar told Associated Press (via LAist) that if we liberate cannabis, the U.S. Department of Justice might just unleash its lawyers on us.

U.S. Director of National Drug Control Policy Gil Kerlikowske said the feds could argue in court that the Golden State has no right to decriminalize a drug that's still an outlaw on a federal level.

The czar's statements come on the heels of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's announcement that his prosecutors would not stop enforcement federal anti-pot laws just because Californians voted to legalize it.

Kerlikowske:

"People don't want to see someone jump in from Washington and tell them how to vote. But I think it's also important the people of California get the facts, and the way this proposition is being sold doesn't hold up to scrutiny."

This all sounds like a scare tactic to us -- a move by federal officials to prevent votes for Prop. 19. And it makes us want to vote for it even more.
