Siva I agree with you completely on Meg Whitman. Our previous governor left our state in devastation and we do not need for it to repeat itself again. Both Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown came to Fresno State for a debate, and Meg did not leave anyone impressed at all. A great majority of the campus students are all in favor of Jerry Brown. You and everyone else who keeping tooting that you've lived in LA and therefore know Brown need to be educated before you start chanting someone else's opinion that this baseless.

First, you need to learn what prop 13 was and the effect it has had to this day. It was a roll back of property tax that:

1) made property tax to fund schools unconstitutional. This made schools then rely on state funding. Did you know CA schools used to rank nationally among the best? Now it's almost last. Cuz we have no money. So Brown had to raise taxes

2) disproportionately and unfairly gave commercial realstate owners an advantage over personal homeowners. commercial property owners have more money and prop 13 allowed them to hide behind their shell companies to avoid taxes.

3) increased incentive for homeowners from selling and thereby increased rent across the state

4) Negatively affected coastal cities like LA, San Diego and SF more - where more of the jobs are

5) increased local dependencies to state which meant we had to accept these block grants from state focused on welfare - yeah the same ones that attract illegal immigrants to the state/makes our state more accomodating them and the same one that gives free money to those who dont seek work

6) Increased our sales tax. If the state doesnt have money, where can it get it? From raising sales tax

So why did prop 13 pass? Because of dummies like you who dont understand the residual impact of a law that on the surface sounds good - reducing taxes. Reducing property tax has a significant impact upfront to the homeowners. We were fine without prop 13 with the best schools, record growth and low unemployment because like the rich, greed takes precedence. Homeowners statistically having a higher voting record so they voted in droves.

So if you're a governor and suddenly see loss of funds you depended on in the past from property tax? What do you do if you now have to depend more on state funds and taxes from the rich? You raise taxes.

Now, come back to full circle. Meg wants to reduce another source of income for the state - taxes from the rich. Then where will she recoup? From you and your increased taxes.

Jerry Brown won. Meg Whitman was just dodging questions. At least Jerry Brown answered them honestly, eventually. Also, Who wants Big Business to run California? They are just going to make California more favorable for them, like repealing ab32 (environmental law) and the Capital Gains tax, which doesn't really affect a vast majority of Americans. Another thing for those religious people. "Separation of Church and State." We like that phrase in California and it's going to stay like that. We are the state that pulls the country forward (maybe not for religion), and we don't need a governor who is just set on making rich people more rich.

I lived in CA when Brown was Governor. He was (and is) a lying BSer. For those who don't remember: Prop 13 helped reduce taxes. Jerry Brown was against it.. and went on to raise taxes six out of the eight years he was was Governor. I don't 'get' the vitriole being aimed at Whitman. She sure as hell couldn't do worse. Maybe it's time for a change, an opportunity for CA to regain it's (long lost) dignity.

Yes, she helped build ebay but the business model was already built by the time she joined. Most importantly, it's easy to ride a wave, especially when fueled by the Internet bubble than to keep it going after the bubble. Since the bubble, Ebay has been in decline and Meg not only slashed jobs in response but reduced employee benefits. She saw Ebay declining and has started looking for a new job - Governor of California. Do we really need someone who is:1) Just looking to make another name for herself and be in the history books - afterall, what more would a rich, famous and accomplished person seek next except more money? Legacy2) able to ride the wave during high times (at Ebay) but bail when it got tough and didnt see a rosy future? We need someone who can help california in it's worst of times. 3) Detached and aloof from the public. She lives in Atherton - look that up. Jerry Brown lives in Oakland. 4) willing to spend $120mm plus on her campaign but not thousands on her own maid5) inexperienced in politics - yeah you spend $120+ to have less committment to special interest groups but once you're governor, you still need to know how to deal with them. Has she ever? Dealing with special interest groups is not the same as dealing with the board of Ebay, Ebay HR or it's employees.

I was struck as to how Whitman never gave any solid answers on any of her plans for California. Rather than giving a direct answer Whitman would launch into a TV type commercial mode which was unsettling and weird. Like it or not Brown was more forthcoming... Brown appeared to win the debate on shear honesty.

Specifically getting us into wars and getting us hated by the rest of the world by this "takeover what and who we want policy". In a speech for president in 1991 I personally watched Jerry explain "that we are spending 2 million dollars each for thousands and thousands of smart bombs that can be directed down the chimney of an enemies target" He went on to explain that our country could use a fraction of that money for much needed infrastructure works like, schools, job training, better police, and for the homeless and mentally challenged" He was speaking of the first Iraq war the Bush Dynasty got us into, a war that never needed to happen and was useless, like Viet Nam. It's very easy for the wealthy right wingers who benefit from these wars (they have stock in the companies that provide the weapons etc.. ie. haliburton) to side with the whitman's, and bush's, of the world. They all stand to lose big money if someone starts asking them why all the war, why all the conflicts. Brown seems to truly be into California for the long haul, he's a great lawyer, he's practical, he's decent, he's always had a big heart toward the have nots. Whitman sides with those who have. Jerry Brown kept trying to minimize his "whore remark" by stating it was a private conversation in which he was involved...and he made a major error by saying he had police chiefs "in his back..." then suddenly stopped realizing what he said. He tried to correct it by saying he had police chiefs backing him...but it was obvious he was intending to state he had police chiefs in his "back pocket." There was a lot of laughter over that...

Again, Brown came up with NO positive solutions to problems in the state nor did he state what he would do beside use his "charisma" to get people to do what he desired, LOL!

And to Ignorance is Bliss: I am a taxpayer, I was born and raised in California, and I remember quite well that Governor Jerry Brown was so frugal with tax dollars that he built up a $5 billion surplus. (Do you remember Johnny Carson joking about how "cheap" the governor was? I do.) Jerry Brown's budget surplus is what spurred Prop. 13. Ronald Reagan didn't achieve a surplus when he was governor (and in fact ran up a historic deficit as president), nor did Deukmejian, WIlson, or Schwarzenegger. Republicans talk a lot about fiscal responsibility but can never seem to deliver on their promises.

In addition to the illegal immigrant housekeeper's 9 yrs of employment with Whitman, Brokaw asked another question to make Whitman uncomfortable -- if Whitman was so eager to improve California politics by winning this election, why didn't she ever cast her own vote in previous California elections. Whitman looked stunned, and apologised- but I think it's too little & too late

Aside from refusing to answer questions and instead dodging to her talking points repeatedly, Whitman still declines to specify which 40,000 employees she'll lay off, where she'll find all these billions in waste and fraud she talks about (which Schwarzenegger also campaigned on but found to be bull when he got into office) or how she's going to forge working relationships with 120 legislators she says she owes nothing to.

Brown won easily. Whitman was flummoxed after the crowd booed her ridiculous assertion that it was a huge insult when Brown's aide used the word "whore," but it was "a totally different thing" when her own campaign manager used the word "whore."

Can we get a few more comments from the people who pay taxes! We ran Brown out of office in the 70's. If it is Brown, flush it down!
