Kamala Harris, who was trailing all night in the attorney general's race, has taken a slim lead over L.A. County D.A. Steve Cooley.

Cooley declared victory hours ago and went home to Rancho Palos Verdes, where he is either sleeping peacefully or frantically hitting "refresh" on the Secretary of State's website.

At 3:20 a.m., his campaign canceled a victory press conference that was to be held at 10:30 this morning "due to the uncertain nature of the final result."

Harris, meanwhile, refused to concede last night -- wisely, it turns out. With 92.1% of the vote counted, she leads 46.1 to 45.6 percent, a difference of 34,000 votes.

At the point, it seems likely that the true winner won't be determined until the late absentee and provisional ballots are counted, which could take as long as 10 days. There are likely tens or even hundreds of thousands of such uncounted ballots.

The San Francisco Chronicle called the race for Cooley around 11:45 p.m., then un-called it at 12:15 a.m.

For all the talk of Cooley's strength in L.A. County, Harris has a whopping 54-39 lead in L.A.

The race was expected to be one of the closest statewide contests. Cooley, the L.A. County District Attorney, had a 1-point edge over Harris in the last Field Poll.
