World Champion Surfer Andy Irons Dies From Dengue Fever

• What a tragic loss. American physicians simply don't know how to treat dengue. My son was surfing in Bali when he got it (probably for the 2nd time since we had it on Maui in 2001) and got the hemorrhagic version. The disease causes the platelets in the blood to drop (in my son's case from an average of 250,000-450,000 to 20) That is what causes the spots of blood under the skin - hemorrhages caused by the blood simply leaking through the walls of the vessels. Sadly, if doctors had tested Andy for platelets (as the do routinely in Bali) they would have known to hospitalize him and take steps such as supportive IVs to prevent shock. This is such a tragedy. • Andy was a great teammate, competitor, friend, and a True Waterman. God be with Lyndie and the baby, who will always be loved by the Ohana. God be with the Irons' Family and keep them strong during this difficult time.
