Porn Protesters Target Biggest Adult Video Maker, Vivid Entertainment, Near Universal City

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation's war against condom-free porn struck at the heart of the adult industry Thursday when AHF organizers held a press conference in front of the Universal City-area headquarters of the globe's leading smut maker, Vivid Entertainment.

AHF is trying to make an example of Vivid by pointing out 20 of its titles that feature condom-free porn.

The state of California says condoms are required on porn sets, but it's more bark than bite. However ...

... if someone files a complaint about a specific set or makes an example of a company, that could focus Cal/OSHA's limited resources on that particular allegation.

The press conference highlights AHF's filing of additional complaints (Notice of Safety or Health Hazards) with the state over Vivid's fine work.

It will be hard for Vivid to argue that it does not make condom-free porn. (Trust us -- we've done the research here).

What the industry has argued is that state workplace safety rules weren't really intended to cover porn (rather, they were aimed at health care, rubber gloves and such).

Porn business leaders also say that really really requiring condoms (as opposed to saying they're required but doing nothing about it) would force the industry underground, where things are really really unsafe.

Here's what AHF honcho Michael Weinstein said in a statement Thursday:

"Steve Hirsch has been quite vocal and outspoken in his opposition to condom use in his films. This is why we are filing additional workplace health and safety complaints with Cal/OSHA: to press for the enforcement of state and local workplace regulatory guidelines which would require the use of condoms in his--and all--adult films produced in California."

Vivid Entertainment actually "produces" very little pornographic content of any kind today. Up until 2007, Vivid had been a condom-only content producer for several years, but that year it went condom-optional. At present, Vivid actually shoots very little content in-house. It no longer maintains its stable of contract performers.

Aside from the celebrity sex tapes it licenses and releases, much of its present-day output is derived from unreleased scenes from its (allegedly extensive) vault.
