Democratic Boss Eric Bauman to L.A. Weekly: Your Paper is 'Trash'

Democratic boss Eric Bauman
Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chairman Eric Bauman ripped into L.A. Weekly at a West Hollywood/Beverly Hills Democratic Club meeting last night. He was apparently steamed over our cover story, "Dethroning West Hollywood's Martinets."

According to West Hollywood Patch reporter James Mills, Bauman took the unusual step to very publicly condemn the Weekly cover story as an example of "yellow journalism." Bauman added, "L.A. Weekly is trash. This is not journalism, this is trash."

Goodness. Guess we hit a nerve, eh?

The general public doesn't know much, if anything, about Bauman, but he's a professional Democrat and behind-the-scenes power player who has a reputation for playing hard-ball politics and not always being a nice guy.

As we worked on the reporting for "Dethroning West Hollywood'd Martinets," we saw Bauman at two Democratic club meetings. He was always a menacing presence, staring down people and walking around the room as if he was some kind of old school political boss who needed to keep the rank and file in line.

At both meetings, he spoke in favor of endorsing West Hollywood City Council incumbents John Heilman, Abbe Land, and Lindsey Horvath. Maintaining the status quo, in other words, was all that he cared about.

In "Dethroning West Hollywood's Martinets," L.A. Weekly shows how the status quo and its defenders have turned West Hollywood into a place where challenging candidates almost never win City Council races, one council member -- John Heilman -- has reigned for 26 years, and City Hall has become disconnected from its core values of working closely with residents.

Bauman obviously hated those findings. Read the cover story to find out why.

Mr. Bauman, you are a moron. Obviously, your pockets are being lined by the incumbants of West Hollywood's City Council. You should move there and run for city council, so you can be another one of Heilman & Land's 'yes-(wo)men'.

A very good argument for term limits for all elected officials, eh? Truly a person should want tomove on after 5 years. "Ugly on the outside, ugly on the inside" is a good rule of thumb.

Bauman's Democratic-machine bias for worthless oldsters who've sold out years ago or run out of ideas, is not reserved for West Hollywood candidates alone.

Bauman's party machine tactics are damaging our chances to "throw the bums out" in the upcoming LA election, too...and unfortunately, right at the moment when, after a decades-long wait, we actually have a real chance to dump about three or four useless incumbents in CD-2, CD-4, CD-6, CD-10, CD-12 and/or even CD-14.

The situation in LA is so dire now that even the electorate was woken up...but not Party Boss Bauman. He wants what's good for the party...not what's good for our city...as bad as any Sarah Palin Republican who always puts Political Party before the good of the nation.

I was present at the Stonewall Democrats endorsement meeting a few weeks ago when Party Boss, Bauman, operating on his home turf, intimidated the membership to overturn the solid recommendation made by their own Endorsement Committee (which was to support the honest, no BS citizen/candidate/challenger, Tomas O'Grady, in the CD-4 race).

And who did Bauman want the Stonewall Dems to endorse instead?

An incompetent, useless incumbent known for being the biggest gas bag on the LA City Council.Bauman the Boss bullied and actually demanded that his sheep endorse the long-in-the-tooth and way-past-his-prime, Tom LaBonge, a do-nothing who has been seated on the LA City Council for far too many years as it is.

Bauman the Boss loyally performed the will of the State Democratic Party Machine and stuck his big nose where it didn't belong.

Stonewall Dems have a right to endorse for their own local elections, whomever passed their stringent test...without interference from the State machine...and the winner, according to Stonewall's endorsement committee was Tomas O'Grady...not LaBonge...and not even Stephen Box, another worthy citizen/challenger.

Instead of doing what's right for the City of Los Angeles and for the citizens of CD-4, Bauman the Boss overturned his hometown organization's endorsement and their many hours of interviews and screening, to what?...pay back a political favor?...and keep the status quo at a time when LA's status quo has brought us to the brink of destruction?...and by the same guy that Bauman endorses?

That doesn't make sense and it contradicted the local Dems' work by imposing the will of the State machine over the will of our local people, who must live with the results, and will have to deal with the Clown LaBonge, whom almost every progressive agrees MUST GO AND GO NOW!

That meeting, too, was a disgusting affair that brought shame and disrepute to the Stonewall Dems, who have lost their credibility with machine-moves like this, especially when they keep backing those who would willingly bankrupt us, sell us out, and/or accomplish nothing except fixing a few pot holes...

Endorsements like the infamous warmongers Jane Harmon, (who just pulled a Palin...) and Diane Feinstein will destroy the Stonewall Club in time...real Progressives want none of this crap!

Stonewall Dems wanted to, and could have endorsed O'Grady, an honest, progressive, and badly-needed public servant, who has fresh solutions and is motivated by his true passion for his long-suffering communites from Silver Lake to Studio City.

Endorsements like the infamous warmongers Jane Harmon, (who just pulled a Palin...) and Diane Feinstein will destroy the Stonewall Club in time...real Progressives want none of this crap!

LaBonge is an infamous, incoherant clown who is unresponsive to any established need or reform that the electorate demands of him and whose time to step down for the good of his district passed years ago. Bauman the Boss makes his Stonewall Dems look like idiots in order to accomplish what?...a repayment of previous political favors?

What a joke that meeting was....a repeat of what you are reporting, Patrick, and now, with their endorsement of the Clown LaBonge, Bauman has made the Stonewall Dems look like clowns as well.

Bauman is working against the progressive agenda and it's obvious he doesn't even care, he's that powerful at the State level now.

If that's what the Stonewall Dems want their record to show...so be it...but get out of our way...real progressives are electing two new challengers to the run-off and LaBonge will be irrelevant within weeks. He's toast because we finally have a choice of dedicated, true progressives, instead of an increpit, old school Dem who has sucked the system dry, left it in shambles and then expects re-election for bankrupting our city!

Dems owe Tomas O'Grady big time for the humiliation they offered him, and the next time Stonewall Dems dare to think independently, or locally, you can bet that Baumann will return to set them straight along State party lines.

A classic, old-school, political boss whom the years have been unkind to, his endorsements are as out-of-touch as his New Jersey/Teamster Boss-look that he's been subjecting us all to for a long time now...and amazingly...without a sense of irony.

Bauman's machine endorsements are as out-of-date as his New Jersey Teamster-style wardrobe, the candidates he endorses...and just as predictable.

Stonewall Dems should have stood up for themselves, and now their cowardice will make things more difficult for everyone who is working to throw the City Council bums out on their ears...starting with LaBonge in CD-4!

Now the Stonewall Dems are left out of the big change that's coming, and score no points for being in-touch with what's happening around them...because they are out-of-touch.

Those who are true Progressives seeking real change would do better by registering with the Green Party. Greens would never endorse an incumbent like LaBonge!....and we would never stab O'Grady in the back the way the Stonewall Dems did at their meeting!

This Progressive will stick with the original Stonewall recommendation by endorsing Tomas O'Grady, the candidate we really need in CD-4.

Come on, CD-4 voters! Get out there an vote on March 8th!

I am a member of the club and presumably on the Steering Committee, requested to be so by the President of the club last year although it doesn't seem to mean anything. I did not receive notice of this meeting last night. Coud it be because they know I don't support the incumbents? I am embarrassed for this group and will no longer participate.

Who cares about Eric Bauman? He is little more than a resident distraction. Let us not take our eye off the ball and let him deflect attention from where it really belongs, exposing the Heilman Machine to the masses before the 3-8-11 election. The West Hollywood/Beverly Hills "Democratic" Club, is hoping to convince the uneducated electorate with their shady at best endorsements - the more people we educate, the more likely we are to finally start replacing the entrenched elites on the West Hollywood City Council with real representatives of the people. Eric Brauman does not matter to us.

Yes, I received a robo-call from Eric that I simply HAD to vote for Jane "Yapper" Harman over her Democratic Primary opponent Marcy WInograd, despite the fact I knew that Yapper advocated bloody, illegal, criminal wars, illegal and unconstitutional wiretapping, institutionalzed torture and bankruptcy "reform" written by the Banksters themselves. A few months later, after she was re-elected with Vigourous Party Support, Yapper is bailing out so over we start again and now Janice Hahn comes out of the shadows and dances the jitterbug on to the stage as the "stock" replacement.

But that's the nature of conventional party politics with a vengeance and at least we're not Texas, or Ohio, or Wisconsin, or Florida . . . the list goes on. The fact of the matter is that a Democratic incumbent would have to be found in bed with a live girl, a dead boy and a David Vitter dirty diaper or two for the party machine to voice opposition to the incumbents re-election, since it already spent much time, effort and expense to get them there. That's just the nature of the beast. What we see here is the script and the players, with robo-calls to follow. . .
