Feds Shut Down Tax Preparer Guillermo Garcia

Tax season is upon us, which means it's time to find a tax preparer who can get creative with deductions. And according to the federal government, Guillermo Garcia is one of the most creative guys around. Sadly though, he'll be sitting this year out.

"He doesn't work here no more because he's retiring," said a receptionist at B. Garcia Income Tax Services in Upland.

Garcia was forced into retirement by the IRS, which audited 183 returns and found that he had understated his clients' tax liability by a mere $784,000.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Garcia would inflate expenses on Schedules A and C. (So if you thought they didn't notice that, it appears that sometimes they do.)

The feds also allege that Garcia skimmed something off the top for himself. In a request for an injunction, prosecutors claim that Garcia would submit returns with higher refunds than the returns his clients had signed. He would then (allegedly) pocket the difference.

A federal judge granted the injunction, barring Garcia from filing any more returns. But according to the receptionist, B. Garcia Income Tax Services is still open for business.
