Hannah Bartle, 21-Year-Old Arizona State University Grad, Dies in Day's Second Fatal Stall on 405 Freeway

Categories: Crash, Death

hannahbartledownload.jpeg
In the second fatal crash of its kind in 24 hours, 21-year-old L.A. resident Hannah Bartle died when her 2004 Suzuki Aero came to a standstill on the 405 freeway at 11:10 p.m. last Friday.

Just the night before, at 11:45 p.m., 23-year-old Vanessa Fulladosa of Palmdale was killed when her vehicle -- which had stalled on the southbound 405 -- was rear-ended in the fast lane. Unlike in Fulladosa's accident, however, Bartle came to a stop for unknown reasons on the northbound side of the freeway, in the second lane from the left, and was hit by at least two other drivers. Friday night was also cursed by heavy rain, making for decreased visibility.

Hannah Bartle had just moved to Los Angeles from Arizona...

... where she grew up in Phoenix and attended Arizona State University. A January 10 article in the Ahwatukee Foothill News recognizes the Fall 2010 graduate for her outstanding academic achievements at ASU:

Arizona State University student Hannah Leigh Bartle of Ahwatukee was honored at the Dec. 16 ASU commencement ceremonies with the Moeur Award. The award is given only to the students graduating with a 4.0 grade-point average who completed the entirety of their coursework at ASU. Out of over 5,300 graduates, Bartle was one of 12 honored with this award. She graduated with a degree in English (Linguistics) from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Bartle's car was hit in Costa Mesa, where the northbound 405 approaches the Santa Ana River. The California Highway Patrol told City News Service that after the young woman "crashed somehow," her Suzuki "came to a stop" and was sideswiped by a Chevrolet Cavalier -- putting her in the position to be fatally hit by a 2003 Toyota FJ Cruiser.

The drivers of those two vehicles came away with only minor injuries. Bartle, however, was rushed to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 12:30 a.m.

According to her profile on Meetup.com, Bartle had "just moved to LA and I want to find a group to practice my Spanish with as well as to meet some new friends."

She had formerly contributed to "Marooned," ASU's student-run lit mag, and co-edited undergrad research journal "The Sparked Synapse Project."

Did you know Bartle, or happen to witness her rainy-night accident? Let us know.

"Just the night before, at 11:45 p.m., 23-year-old Vanessa Fulladosa of Palmdale was killed when hervehicle -- which had stalled on the southbound 405 -- was rear-ended in the fast lane."-Vanessa was/is  my daughter. The second of five children. I am sorry for your loss. I know the emptiness and anguish that overcomes you. Vanessa was on the brink of really starting her life. A recent university graduate with her first big job, living at home before saving enough to get a new car and her own place. We miss her so much. The 405 freeway needs to be made safer than it is. Unfortunately I suppose we all are here only temporarily. I do know that Vanessa lived a life very full and experienced as much as she could have in such a short time. Her name means change. I thinks she is still here but in a better form. Peace.

Hannah became my labmate last summer when she was a PSLC intern in Pittsburgh, and I am so sorry to hear that she is not with us anymore :(. She was a fantastic young woman, scientist, and would have made such an impact wherever she had gone in her career. My sincere condolences to her family, boyfriend, and friends.

...my sincerest condolences, Casey. i brushed paths with your sister, but very briefly and under unusual circumstances. i was wondering if you and your family were able to review anything related to the accident; coroner's report or any hospital records.

Your sister seemed like an amazing spirit; a force...i can only imagine that she'll always continue to shine here and wherever wonderful Spirits go to.

Hannah and her family have been our neighbor's since 1991, she went to grade school, middle school and high school with my daughter Ashley. She was kind, sweet, beautiful and a caring young woman. Our family was so upset to hear about Hannah, we will miss her. We will cherish our memory's of her always and keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. Casey, if there is anything we can do for you or your family please let us know.

Like several others, I met Hannah at UCSD. We were waiting together in a room between interviews, alone, and exchanged flutters of the heart. It made a singular impression on me, her down-to-earth personality and clarity when expressing emotion. She cared about sharing, sharing her considerations humbly, and I felt as though this alone was a wealth to me. Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to be closer to Hannah, but from reading these comments it is heartening that those who knew her remain so positively affected, and changed for the better. I've been thinking a lot about your family, Casey, and imagine an exceptional apple doesn't fall far from a exemplary tree!

My sincere condolences go out to Hannah's loved ones. Though I did not know her, she appears to be an extraordinarily bright, gifted, and caring human being. As witness to the events that have transpired, I can say that Hannah was in the best of hands given the circumstances. Not only was she assisted by those involved in the accident, but a number of people who were not rushed immediately to her aid. One of the CHP officers investigating the accident told me that if she were in Hannah's position, she would have wanted the same care that was afforded her. Despite this, I believe that I speak for everyone present when I say that I only wish that we could have done more. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Michael- I'm Hannahs sister, can you please email me just your name and number at lyricalaltercation@gmail.com and then remove this comment if you are able too, if you can't I will call to have it removed. My mom is collecting names and numbers of people who were there and would appreciate yours as well. However we don't want any information about what happened during or after the accident online. Thank you.

I drove by the accident minutes after it occurred. I would have never guessed the accident would lead to a death, it appeared to be minor. I wish I had stopped and helped somehow.

I heard the accident from work. It occured by the Euclid on/offramp. It sounded like three shots being fired from a rifle(the last boom was the loudest). I knew it was bad and prayed.Hopefully Hannah had repented of her sins and was a believer in Jesus.

Traffic was backed up and several Emergency Vehicles, Fire Trucks, and CHP Officers whizzed by.

My deepest condolences to Casey Bartle and the Bartle family.

As Hannah's sister I request that you take this comment down immediately. This is inappropriate and inconsiderate to all of us who knew and loved her.

Like Cornelia, I met Hannah at UCSD a couple of days before the accident. We had a few long discussions over those few days and she made a strong impression on me---always smiling, extremely bright, very warm and unusually kind. That I've been thinking about her so much since I heard the news is testament to how special she was.

Hannah was dating me and my husband's good friend, Jere... She was a great friend and a beautiful person inside and out... We had her and Jere over for dinner about a week ago. I keep thinking about that night. We drank wine and sat at our studio in LA and talked all night.. I keep thinking about the conversations we had.. Her dog walking excursions and her anticipation about grad school.. We made plans to go to the aquarium in Long Beach and hiking in Malibu.. We miss her very much..

I also remember asking her what her favorite hobby in the whole wide world is.. She said it is poetry.

I had a graduate class with Hannah. She was a brilliant individual. Every time she contributed to a discussion in class everyone would exchange glances. I know we were all think "Wow, she's absolutely brilliant. I can't believe she's an undergrad."

Hannah went to high school with my older son, and she also came highly recommended as a tutor for my younger son. She always came over to tutor with a smile on her face. She helped my younger son a lot who was comfortable with her right away. She was beautiful, Intelligent, sweet and had a way with helping others. I am shocked and saddened to hear about this. My condolences to her family and friends. May your wonderful memories carry you through this.

Casey,

I'm not certain that I ever had the pleasure of meeting you, but I certainly knew your sister and talked with your mom on several occasions. Your mom even gave me a hug at the MP open house the first time I ever met her, and I'd only had Hannah in class for a mere two weeks. But I instantly connected with your amazing, beautiful sister and that hug from your mom seemed so appropriate, so kind, so supportive. I will miss Hannah dearly.

She actually handed me her final response notebook her junior year a bit forlorn, because she said, "this is the last one"--the class was ending. I had to fight back tears when she did that because it struck me then how much I was going to miss her and her classmates.

She and I kept in regular email contact for a few years after I took a break from teaching. I have those emails saved and would love to share them with you and your family if you'd like me to. My email is jayne.rogers@gmail.com.

Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Casey- I am so sad for you and your family. Your sister's compassion, intelligence, talent and kindness makes her such a special person. I am so sure that she is okay and happy where she is now, but we will miss her so much. She was such a great asset to the MP theater department and I wish I would have had her in an English class, although I probably would not have been able to teach her much. God bless her and your family-- I am truly glad that I was able to say that I know her.

My condolences to you and your family. Having taught you both at MPHS, I was doubly blessed. What a privilege to have had the opportunity to teach you both; what a loss to you, your family, to us all.

Casey, I am so sorry about Hannah. I just met her last Wednesday at UCSD, she struck me as a very open, friendly girl with an avid interest in the people around her. I know she enjoyed her time in San Diego, she loved the campus at UCSD, the view of the ocean from the highest building on campus, she was looking forward to coming to live there. I remember thinking that I would really like to be in the same cohort with her, she seemed easy-going, unassuming, making you feel at ease in an essentially competitive environment.

I think you have her personality pegged :) I'm glad you had the opportunity to meet this amazing girl.

I went to high school with Hannah. She was in my creative writing class and one of the best writers at a high school level I had ever heard. I also go to Arizona State but at a different campus. The last time I saw Hannah was at a coffee shop. It was the first time I'd seen her throughout college. She was studying, yet we spoke as she wished me the best of luck in my career. I'm shocked also.

I knew Hannah. We worked together on a project for a graduate linguistics course at ASU. This is shocking.
