'Marriage Equality' Banner Vandalized at Gay-Friendly Hollywood Church (PHOTO)

Updated after the jump: Sassy retaliation!

Of all L.A. neighborhoods, you'd think at least free-wheelin' Hollywood (well, and its sister city to the West) would be a safe place to pray to whomever we choose while loving whomever we choose -- a simple concept with big conservative enemies.

That's what the progressive Hollywood United Methodist Church, located on the corner of Franklin Avenue and North Highland Avenue, has always been about; theirs is a refreshingly open-minded take on tradition. So it was a real bummer, yesterday evening, to find out that some asshole had decided to subject his/her own homophobic self-loathing onto such an awesome community -- the kind that makes Los Angeles the place to be.

A photo of the damage:

The vandal did a clean cut-job around the word "EQUALITY" -- changing the message of the six-foot-by-eight-foot banner from "THIS CHURCH SUPPORTS MARRIAGE EQUALITY" to "THIS CHURCH SUPPORTS MARRIAGE." It's an obvious stab at the currently up-for-debate right of Californians to have same-sex, but otherwise traditional, marriage.

After the hateful rectangle of negative space was discovered yesterday, church officials released an uplifting statement:

"As a church we do believe in marriage. But until everyone -- and that means everyone -- has the right to marry the one you love, regardless of gender, we will proclaim with our hearts and souls, and yes, our banners, that we believe in marriage equality."

Sigh. No matter how hard you fight, you're going to get the immature wackjobs who think shit like this is funny. We've contacted Reverend Kathy Cooper-Ledesma to see how much repairs will cost, and whether the investigation has any leads -- so stay tuned.

Update: Hollywood United Methodist Church member and marketing coordinator Chad Darnell says the church will throw it right back in the anti-equality wise guy's face with a banner that says: "Dear vandals: You can cut the word equality out of a banner, but you can't cut the message out of the church."

Touche. Darnell says a private donor offered the few hundred dollars it'll take to have the new one made -- and in the interim, they'll put up the familiar "No H8" banner that served as a safety flag during the "No on Prop. 8" campaign.

Now, for extra pizzaz, they'll also write "Have you seen our equality?" across it.

Oh this old thing?

Turns out the "equality" banner had to be taken down today anyway, as "Welcome to People," the upcoming Michelle Pfeiffer and Chris Pine movie, will be shooting on the front lawn. No biggie.

The Hollywood sanctuary is sort of a star-studded affair in general: Actress and church member Pauley Perrette, of "NCIS" and Justin Bieber Twitpic fame, recently wore a "No H8" dress to the "People's Choice Awards." Like we said, no biggie.

After yesterday's vandalism, Darnell says, "The support -- from all over the country -- has been tremendous... [partly] because the picture [of the banner] was picked up in the news, especially by gay news websites."

The church just filed a police report this morning, after being asked by a reporter if they'd done so.

"We just saw it as being a jerk -- we didn't actually see it as being a crime," he says.

Check out today's front page article from LA web magazine, Zócalo Public Square, titled "Losing My Religion: Confessions of a Guatemalan Mormon Who Grew Up in the Hood". Zócalo intern, Brenda Yancor, describes her courageous religious resignation: http://zocalopublicsquare.org/...

I have a feel that if Jesus, the most perfect being this earth has ever seen, being God in human form himself, would have turned all kinds of tables in this church - a house and place of worship to God - about the support of gay marriage here, a place that is supposed to glorify God by ways through the Word (which does speak so strongly against homosexuality) and through the man who was and is Christ. He turned tables in the temple over men making a market out of the place that was supposed to worship God. I can't imagine how He would react to this. And it would never be out of hatred for the people themselves, just for the lies they swallowed and the warped views that they adopted and spread to others. The Bible is the Bible. God is love and love is real. Understanding His perfect love is completely different from what we call "making love" and love in general, which we have made a complete bomb of. My prayer for all of you is that you seek Him fully and in your secret place to find His perfect love in its entirety. Dig into the Word because it is the truth given to us and it is living and breathing. Anything aside from a life with Christ is a distraction and a lie, but thank God for the grace he pours out to us abundantly every single day. I support living with NO HATE, but I also support the living Word. It's up to you to decide what it actually means to love, and you won't find the truth in that unless you understand Christ, who is was and is, and his most pure love for you and for the Father. I love you all.

Why don’t homosexuals create their own church based on their own beliefs instead of living a lie?How could anybody possibly be a Christian homosexual without being the ultimate betrayer? Jesus said he did not change one dot in the word of his father. His father calls homosexuality an abomination that he despised so bad he kills them all and turns Lott's wife into a pillar of salt for taking one last peek as they were fleeing. The Sodom and Gomorrah story was a Jew q-word scam designed to breed predators, concubines (B-words) and but goys (Q-words) by manipulating homosexuals to betray themselves. You can only get more by not letting them die out naturally like they're supposed to and always did before it created homophobia. It's the act of self-betrayal that creates the self-loathing necessary for people to kill People they don’t know or hate, or have sex with people they don't love to get what they want.Anybody with half the brains of a piss-ant could figure out that if homosexuality really is an abomination, the unforgivable sin, the worst thing you could possibly do is make a baby with a self-betraying q-word or b-word who’s after what you got. Being homosexual is by far the lesser of the evils, even if it really is a sin.We obviously live on after our deaths through our children and the consequences of what we and they do.There are exceptions to every rule but when a man makes a baby with a B-word it’s just about guaranteed the SOB is going to be a qword that will do anything for money, just like his mother. Everybody knew that before the Sodom and Gomorrah scam became a part of our culture. With weapons of mass destruction making conventional war obsolete, it’s time to stop breeding Q-words before they get us all killed!Comments? rgaryc at hotmail.

But vandalism is a crime. With all the traffic that passes this church hopefully someone saw something.

"Negative Space" also describes the zone between the ears of whomever committed this vandalism.

Probably one more from the "Hatin' in the Name of Christian Love" crowd...
