How to Take Ecstasy: L.A. County Health Officials Teach You How

Categories: Raves

Thumbnail image for edc 2008.JPG
Raver down at Electric Daisy Carnival in 2008.
One of the more bizarre aspects of officials sanctioning raves at the publicly owned L.A. Coliseum and Sports Arena is that Los Angeles County health authorities have actually embarked on a campaign to teach young people how to take ecstasy safely.

Under the strategy of "harm reduction" -- if you're going to get wasted, mind as well help you do so without killing yourself -- the county this year will distribute fliers at raves that give tips that essentially amount to advice on how not to O.D. on this illicit, schedule 1 drug.

Strange, because ...

county ecstasy flier.jpg
Your tax dollars at work: L.A. County wants you to roll safely.

... the Coliseum Commission, which runs those venues, seems to be bending over backwards to allow ecstasy-fueled raves to happen four times a year at the sites.

California drug-abatement law might have a different view of the parties:

"Every building or place used for the purpose of unlawfully selling, serving, storing, keeping, manufacturing, or giving away any controlled substance, precursor, or analog specified in this division, and every building or place wherein or upon which those acts take place, is a nuisance which shall be enjoined, abated, and prevented, and for which damages may be recovered, whether it is a public or private nuisance."

But L.A. County says, hey, if you're going to party, here's how:

-Take frequent breaks.

-Let your body cool and rest.

-Stay hydrated.

This part is really interesting, because doctors say ecstasy can rob your body of electrolytes and cause you to shut down and end up in a hospital.

-Sip or take small gulps of water ... and non-caffeinated sports-drinks like Gatorade (to replenish electrolytes). (Emphasis ours).
The_More_You_Know.jpg
Only you can prevent e-tards.
Another flier that will be passed out at raves actually states this:
"Aim low (dose AND frequency)

- Ecstasy risks increase with larger doses ... "

Wow. We're just waiting for the tips on how to smoke crack and of course, how to properly shoot heroin.

Thanks for the public service announcement.

read a book called "e the incredibly stange history of ecstasy" by Tim Pilcher it documents 95 years of ecstasy use. people should know facts before they advocate drug use. MDMA is truly beautiful. PLUR peace love unity respect.

What a tragically naive article. The bastardisation of drugs only serves to exacerbate the problems that arise with risky drug taking behaviour ie, drugs takers being disinclined to seek help for friends through fear of punishment by association. People are going to take drugs, it's a fact of life. Why not give these people the opportunity to make safe and smarter decisions.

A 'zero tolerance' approach has severely limited the potential for life-saving information to be distributed to those who need it most.

This approach has also wholeheartedly aided the current climate of drug crime in society, including the health implications associated with these practices.

It amazes me that people actually think there's an "addictive" difference between illegal and "legal" drugs. The ONLY difference is the amount of sales-potential that the drug companies can realize. since they cant patent MDMA it has been outlawed, which is unfortunate, because frankly this drug has minimal addictive qualities. You can absolutely "love" E but still go long periods of time between doses without any "withdrawel symptoms".

Now certainly the fact that it "is" kept illegal - does CREATE the primary cause/risk of getting bad pills -- but isnt that the whole point?

Oh, PS... "illicit" sounds like a dirty word, but it is not- it is just a label indicating that some group of people was discriminated against enough by political-mainstream interests to provoke sanctions that could be used to control them (and their drug of choice). I bet you think "Schedule 1" sounds dirty too, but it isn't. It is supposed to merely mean that there is high potential for abuse and absolutely NO potential for therapeutic application... Which just goes to show how utterly meaningless our drug-classification system is in America. MDMA first came on the scene in our country as a therapy drug carefully distributed to patients by medical professionals in a controlled setting aimed at (and very successful in!) marriage empathy training. It already HAD an established therapeutic benefit (so should NOT have been given a Schedule 1 classification) when it found its way into the hands of ravers and was quickly made illegal- OUT OF PREJUDICE AGAINST PARTYING YOUTH- NOT BECAUSE OF THE SUBSTANCE'S PROPERTIES AND EFFECTS!!!!! As I also mentioned in my last comment, There are clinical studies being conducted right now on the East Coast, collecting data on the effects of MDMA on PTSD in affected veterans. So far, results are pointing strongly in favor of MDMA's effectiveness in psychotherapy aimed at treating people who have suffered psychological traumas. In addition, NO convincing evidence has been found to date that would indicate that MDMA is a drug that carries any significant risk of dependence and/or addiction. I could go on forever on the meaninglessness of our drug-scheduling- i.e. the example of marijuana- a plant widely celebrated throughout the course of human history (at least for many thousands of years) as extremely therapeutically beneficial in many ways & for a multitude of ailments... which is also labeled a "Schedule 1" drug despite the contradictory definition of what a schedule 1 drug is supposed to be.... there is SO much more I'd like to say on other unfairly scheduled compounds, but for right now I'll shut up. I just want to end with saying that I bet you thought you were being clever/witty with your stupid "only you can prevent e-tards" picture... But you probably didn't think about what an ignorant, hateful asshole you are for being the guy that would rather let them die than consider valuable change in social policy to help educate, protect, and save these people. Really, dude...only YOU can prevent e-tards- since you are the one who wants to kill them, preventing them in the most literal (NOT CLEVER AND WITTY, YOU JERK) sense of "prevention."

It is bizarre for such a seemingly educated journalist to say that we should keep our nation on training wheels forever because we just aren't smart, mature, and responsible enough to make our own informed decisions about what activities we engage in on our own time. I'm sorry to break it to you, but it is pretty common knowledge these days that teaching "abstinence-only" ideals is ineffective. Education about how to engage in SAFE practices actually does work... So excuse us [the intelligent people] for wanting to provide our fellow citizens with the tools they need to survive. Just like sex, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO IT ANYWAY, regardless of how YOU feel about it. For Heaven's sake-show a microscopic amount of compassion! Let teens know that if they don't use a condom they might contract an incurable disease! Give people the safety information they need on how to avoid harming themselves at the club, and how to help others do the same!!

James- you have it SO backwards!!! Ecstacy is, at this very moment, being clinically proven (in the United States, no less) to TREAT mental illnesses. It is people like you (supporting ignorant and vacuous rhetoric) who would rather let innocent, ever-experimental teens overheat and dehydrate to dangerous levels before telling them how to stay healthy- who are responsible for any "mental illnesses" out there associated with MDMA usage. And guess what? If Ecstacy hadn't been made illegal (against the will of the scientific community, which has long-recognized its enormous therapeutic value, no less)- IT WOULD NOT BE THE UNREGULATED "POISON" STUFF YOU SPEAK OF!!!!!!!!

People use recreational drugs today, and have for a REALLY long time. Whether it's alcohol, tobacco, or any other street drug, it makes good sense for the law and the lawmakers to "protect and serve" through education, and not through denial.

Ecstacy is no worse than alcohol, and this tactic will save lives in the long run.

Kudos to the person who got this going!

Keeping it Plur
Keeping it Plur

First and foremost EVERYONE needs to educate themselves on EVERYTHING you intake whether it be a hotdog, ecstasy, or expired groceries. although all results vary the article has validity. "the best decision is an informed decision". the problem is that young kids are not educating themselves and they think ecstasy isn't that serious or life threatening but it is. and you can't keep popping enough is enough. -Just like drinking there is a point to where you are beyond wasted. At the time you don't feel drunk however as your drinking , its 15-20 minutes after the drink that things start to kick up. Some believe the more E you take the stronger the effect but since the drug takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to take affect most kids get too anxious so they keep popping. Also the frequency, if you're doing that once a month or whatever the going rate is the less likely you will feel it by the time something -that is really worth the experience comes around- its pointless. I think this is a great article for people who don't realize how to control themselves to wake up and realize hey take it easy, enjoy the music, dance a little more, and bring an unopened water bottle and refill it. [If a may mention Nocturnal which is sponsored by GROOVE tickets (not livenation or ticketmaster) had FREE water refill stations and attendants who did it for you.] No one wants anyone one to die. Especially at raves. I only wish the coliseum (which obviously isn't holding these events anymore) would realize they don't have to close the entrance/exits to the coliseum. Its upsetting to everyone which back fires on law enforcement. > Ravers don't go to Raves to die or fight! Violence is the last thing anyone wants to do there especially under the influence of E. MOST IMPORTANTNLY-**To people reading the article thinking that this is about "How to take Ecstacy" it's not. Just like Planned parenthood isn't encouraging people to have sex. It's about making the information available to those who need it or knows someone who does.

hooray for common sense! the bottom line is how can we save as many people as possible themselves. people are going to take drugs anyways. why not give them useful information on how to survive it.

Caffeine Does Not Dehydrate You! Alcohol Does, Though . . .

Substituting caffeinated drinks for water or non-caffeinated drinks cause no hydration difference in sports performance or activity levels. A 2005 study at the University of Connecticut, Human Performance Laboratory showed no differences in fluid-electrolyte balance and renal function for adult males participating in the study. The researchers concluded that the general belief that caffeine forms a diuretic leading to accelerated dehydration wasn't supported by the evidence.

Alcohol and Dehydration

In contrast to studies on caffeine and dehydration, alcohol tends to dehydrate the body as a diuretic. When athletes exercise and re-hydrate with varying amounts of alcohol in their drinks, Peak Performance reported the amount of water lost in urination was in direct correlation to the percentage of alcohol contained in the drink. Simply put, the more alcohol content in the drink, the less water content the athlete was able to maintain.

Lets be real, people take drugs. Its not like Los Angeles county is promoting drug use. They are simply trying to get the people that make the decision to take drugs to practice it safely and realize the hazards and risks of taking such a substance (just like alcohol). A waste of tax money? Maybe, but who are we to say what is a waste of tax money if one of these cheap signs saves someone's daughter's life because she was being an idiot one night? In my opinion, yes, its pretty stupid that we have to display things like this, but at least the money is going to something possibly helpful to someone and not in the pockets of some corrupt city official or wherever our tax money disappears to.

Dennis, You're a real reactionary and it's a real embarrassment to encounter fellow citizens who support (bad) public policy on the basis of emotion, false information, and empirically falsified beliefs. The drug war has not worked, is not working, and will never work. EU countries are proving that relaxing failed prohibition laws, while amping up education and public attentiveness (rather than denial), works so much better for managing the inevitable problems that come with markets, individual freedom, and use of intoxicants (including alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine). The position you articulate here makes an attempt at a conservative evaluation, but REAL conservatives (as opposed to the manic, right-wing version of neo-conservatism that has taken hold in America in the last thirty years) have never believed that it is the job of the state to "straighten the crooked timber of humanity." Also check your spelling!

It doesn't really "teach" you how to roll Dennis Romero... Its simply informing you on what to do when you are in that scenario. The SRC classes that every high school student is required by law to take also informs you on other drugs beside ecstasy. Should we start to blame the class that is required by law to "teach" children about the harmful effects of drugs? This class tells kids if your going to do at least be educated enough to understand what is happening to the body. I took this class when i was 15, although all the things that they said about marijuana wasn't true, they still inform you what happens when your under the influence of illegal and prescribed drugs. Which is the bigger threat? Being informed or not being informed?

Honestly, this is a great step forward and I don't think the author of this article fully understands why this is such a good idea: YOUNG PEOPLE ARE GOING TO TAKE E ANYWAY. Look at what happened with prohibition in the US... people still drank! But educating people like this might just save a few lives. Good for them

Jopari

Is it not clear that a drug policy of reprimand instead of dealing with it as a health issue doesnt work? This article is clearly biased towards the idea of what is illicit, shall stay illicit. It is a far more sensible approach to educate those who are unaware of whatever they are taking. Its a far from bizzare approach, and if Dennis Romero had looked into MDMA and its real damages, he'd learn its a lot less harmful than crack and heroin. The prohibition attitude of the past 40 years hasn't worked, it didn't work for alcohol and writing like this will only further the prejudice and lack of real research and help in the matter.

The GRiSM
The GRiSM

I agree with this.

Just ignoring the fact that people are going to do the drug anyways and completely banning it just to see these people die or seriously injure themselves because they don't know how to handle the substance is pretty heartless.

Now teaching them how to do it as safe as possible is the better way.

Once something like this is socially acceptable a lot of people will most likely not do it.

Rebelling unconsciously as a teen is what leads kids to take such actions.

Good for you L.A.Now there will be a lot less dead 14 year olds taking E and not knowing what to expect and will have the knowledge to take care of their dumb-ass selves instead of ruining everyone else's good time.

Voice of Reason
Voice of Reason

Don't rip on a strategy that is actually helping. Try ripping on "the war on drugs." It's a much more pertinent issue, which is why it's been reported on to such an extent. Harm reduction strategies are proven to be much more effective than simply saying "fuck it, do what you want and if you die or end up in jail that was your choice." People are going to make mistakes and educating them on what NOT to do is at least a positive step towards helping the people, even if it doesn't eradicate the drug abuse (which will never happen). Drugs are here to stay and they will only become more numerous as science develops.

Additionally, if you did some more research, you'd learn that ecstasy in its pure form was in fact used as a therapeutic drug to help people such as War Vets with PTSD and it was said that one session a month of marriage/relationship counseling with the use of MDMA was proven to be DRASTICALLY more effective than 12 sessions without it. That was the originally intent of the creator of ecstasy: as a prescription drug to help treat things such as depression.

Granted I know 98% of the E for sale on the streets is not pure and potentially dangerous, I'm just saying that the concept of ecstasy is not a bad one in its original form.

That being said, I believe handing out fliers like these that "teach" kids how to take E safely is the best available strategy for decreasing deaths.

Would you prefer your cousin/brother/sister/son/daughter wind up dead or seizing on the pavement? This won't necessarily prevent that, but other than smacking your friends/family that abuse E upside the head, this is the best chance you've got right now of keeping them safe.

So don't rag on safety. If you want to bash the methods used, why don't you supply a better one and follow through with telling local drug enforcement/safety agencies about it instead of sitting in an office chair of apathy.

Also: "Maybe in the future try to do research on the crap you spew out instead of just operating purely on emotion and anecdotal nonsense. "

What he said. Be a good journalist and don't sell yourself short. Whether you like it or not, your name is attached to these articles and so is your publication's.

Stop The Sensationalism
Stop The Sensationalism

Dear Dennis Romero, and all the other people on this post: You're all misinformed and overreacting with sensationalized comments and reporting. All drugs are dangerous, but one of the most dangerous drugs is perfectly legal: alcohol. Numerous scientists and doctors in the medical and research community have widely purported that current drug policy does not accurately control substances. Ecstasy is one of the lowest on the scale, and when you factor in both cost to the individual and cost to society, alcohol is number one on the list as the worst drug, far surpassing other substances. Alcohol induces violence and is a major player in most domestic violence cases. People black out, throw-up, can't speak, can't remember, become violent or can't walk when they are highly intoxicated, yet this behavior is tolerate by society. Ecstasy, while it does carry it's own set of risks, has risks that are far less harmful than alcohol and does not induce violent behavior whatsoever. Before you right ridiculous, sensationalized reports, make the effort to do some research. It's not hard with this thing called the internet. You can read an indepth scientific analysis of drugs and drug policy on The Lancet here: http://www.thelancet.com/journ... Or even webMD did a better job reporting here: http://www.webmd.com/mental-he...

Harm reduction is the best way to save lives when we know that people will continue to use drugs. An abstinence approach does not work!! Far more evolved nations utilize harm reduction methods (e.g., clean needle exchange, nurse-aided shooting galleries, etc.) and it is effective at preventing unnecessary diseases and deaths.
