Hydraulic 'Fracking' -- New Oil-Drilling Technique -- Could Create Jobs, Poison Tap Water in California

therewillbebloodimages.jpg
What's a little contamination in the name of the drill?
The nation was abuzz yesterday with highly unsustainable news of a fresh way to squeeze millions more barrels of oil from the deepest Earthstuffs of America the Beautiful: It's called hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" among Big Oil execs and burly Daniel Day-Lewis types, and it's a distinct possibility for California's own Monterey Shale, an oil field stretching from NorCal down to Los Angeles County.

Pros: A shit-ton more jobs in the drilling biz, national internalizing of the industry (lining up nicely with Obama's call for fewer imports, if not his more karma-friendly obsession with alternative energies of the future) and possibly lower gas prices.

Cons: Uh... Where do we start?

Well, obviously, there's that whole global warming thing to worry about, but even if you're an energy pessimist who thinks we've already screwed ourselves into an apocalypse so we might as well enjoy our Hummers up 'til the end, a few more immediate problems might also plague the fracking revolution.

As if SoCal hasn't had enough problems with cancer-causing tap water, Erin Brockovich (the real one, not the "Pretty Woman" one) has a new contaminant to worry about: Oil.

That's right: The same hellish slime that recently coated the Gulf of Mexico and all its creatures in the great BP spill could now be coming to a faucet near you.

The Associated Press dropped the exciting report yesterday:

Companies are investing billions of dollars to get at oil deposits scattered across North Dakota, Colorado, Texas and California. By 2015, oil executives and analysts say, the new fields could yield as much as 2 million barrels of oil a day -- more than the entire Gulf of Mexico produces now.

This new drilling is expected to raise U.S. production by at least 20 percent over the next five years. And within 10 years, it could help reduce oil imports by more than half, advancing a goal that has long eluded policymakers.

Apparently, though engineers were once skeptical that flacking "wouldn't work to squeeze oil out fast enough to make it economical," drillers have figured out a way to create more cracks in the deep-ground shale with different chemicals.

The Monterey Shale is often referred to as the largest oil field in the nation. What that now means for us Californians, is that -- oh joy -- we have the misfortune of having built our homes atop a freaking gold mine way beyond 49ers status, in the form 500 billion barrels of oil. According to the Money Map Press, predicting a breakthrough back in November:

MontereyShale.jpg
The Money Map Press
"That's enough to eliminate U.S. crude imports for 7 decades at current usage levels. At today's prices, that adds up to $40 trillion worth of domestic oil...

What's kept it from being a superstar oil field is the very poor "recovery rate" of Monterey Shale wells.

Only around 10% of the crude available from each well can typically be brought to the surface.

But according to my Inner Circle contacts, recent developments in oil markets and drilling technologies could soon turn this under-tapped reserve into one of the hottest oil properties on the planet..."

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has launched a study of the fracking process, and promises to examine every possible danger. But their previous go-aheads don't exactly show a clean record. The Huffington Post reports:

The study, announced in March, comes amid rising public concern about the safety of fracking, as ProPublica has been reporting for years. While it remains unclear whether the actual fracturing process has contaminated drinking water, there have been more than 1,000 reports around the country of contamination related to drilling, as we reported in 2008. In September 2010, the EPA warned residents of a Wyoming town not to drink their well water and to use fans while showering to avoid the risk of explosion. Investigators found methane and other chemicals associated with drilling in the water, but they had not determined the cause of the contamination.

We've contacted the EPA's SoCal division -- waiting for a call back.

According to the Monterey County Weekly, though, the "2005 Energy Bill exempted fracking fluids -- generally considered by the industry to be proprietary -- from disclosure to the EPA." In addition:

The Monterey County zoning administrator in October approved a use permit for Denver-based oil company Venoco to drill up to nine exploratory wells in the Hames Valley using fracking. An appeal filed by Ventana Conservation and Land Trust of Lockwood is slated to be heard by the county planning commission on March 30.

So what'll it be, California: Comeback economy/even richer oil companies or cancer-free H20?

Considering the billions at stake, we're thinking a little of the latter may be compromised for a whole lot of the former. But yeah -- stay tuned. And hey, BP: Looks like you may not have to give up the monster Carson Refinery after all!

"FRACKING"...This is the next thing to stop being introduced  into ireland .word has it that this method of drilling for gas contaminates the ground water and the soil .how is this so ? you may ask .Well to be quick and not boar you to tears ..the Chemicals used in his process lead to chemical reactions in the rock  thus leading to radon leaks and other substances which  get into the ground water and thus leak out into the DRINKING WATER THAT CONSUMERS GET THROUGH THE HOUSEHOLD TAP SUPPLY.THESE CHEMICALS THAT GET INTO THE DRINKING WATER SUPPLY CAN CAUSE  DISEASES LIKE CANCER AND SO ON .IT CAN LEAD TO PREGNANT WOMEN GIVING BIRTH TO DEFORMED BABIES .IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME THEN EDUCATE YOUR SELVES ..DONT JUST TAKE MY WORDS HERE AS GOSPEL .EDUCATE YOUR  SELF .

How does this method(FRACKING) of drilling for gas /oil effect us living in DUBLIN ? .(.The plans are to start this metod in the west and midlands of Ireland)with the comming years a demand for drinking water will increase in Dublin and with the aging of the cities piping system causing water loss and the lesser rainfall not filling the reservoires ,We will need to start tapping into the River Shannons water supply..??..NOW ARE YOU GETTING WORRIED..I KNOW THAT I AM .

The French Government is aware of this method of drilling and are so concerned about it  that it has  BANNED FRACKING because they are very worried that their crops and vines for wine making will be contaminated and thus lead to their export markets being wiped out .Remember what happened to the spannish exports when the FALSE rumour spread around the world that  spanish cucumber  was contaminated .SO ASK YOUR SELF WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN TO IRISH  FOOD EXPORTS  IF FRACKING  TAKES PLACE IN iRELAND.

I know that at the moment we irish are not very favourable towards the French because of the economic situation in Ireland etc but on this Fracking  metod of extracting  GAS.The French are right to ban it ..and so should we ..

There are county councils in Ireland at this moment in time thinking of giving permission to Forgein based gas exploration companies  to use this method (Fracking) in IRELAND ,BASED ON ADVISE FROM GEOLOGISTS FROM ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY IN SCOTLAND .

ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY.IS IN PART FUNDED BY AN AMERICAN COMPAMY  WHICH HAS MAJOR LINKS TO THIS METHOD OF EXTRACTING GAS...AND THE RUMOUR IS THAT  THIS AMERICAN COMPANY I BELIEVE IS SEEKING THE CONTRACT TO DRILL IN IRELAND.....????.So what can the irish people do about this ..Well they can start asking questions of the people representing them in the County Councils (especialy in the west and midlands)  and ask them what do they know about Fracking ,it will be intresting to hear the replies .Stay alert folks and watch what you drink ...especialy your CHILDREN

Everyone who is commenting negatively about fracking and the delivery of natural gas and new oil sources are just kidding, right?  We all use energy for out cars, trucks, home heating/cooling, charging of cell phones delivery of everything we use to survive, right?  Unless you are burning wood, hunting, growing your fruit and veggies, and sleeping in a tepee, we should all support the cause.

well.. strap me to a pigs gut and drag me thru the mud, that's the very mindset that is going to see this planet rot. put down yer banjo buddy and look at the facts. here in australia they are starting the same process to extract natural gas from deposits deep underground. positve note; plenty of work for skill related workers etc and big profits for mining companies and taxes for the government(not much difference here) and enough energy to keep us going for 100 yrs. negative side: contamination of water table and destruction of valuable food production land and risk of contamination of ecosystems, another 100 yrs of pumping carbons back into the atmosphere? This whole fracking bullsh.. is purely so govts and big business can cash in on an energy boom. here in queensland they cant get the resources out of the ground quick enough to cash in before 'smart 'energy' (solar wind etc) takes over which is already poised to take over the majority of energy production . so they can all "FRACK OFF"

The monterey shale area that i see mapped above is under a tremendous area of farming and dairy land.  We supply alot of food for the nation and I can't imagine wanting benzene, mercury, lead and the 900 other cancer causing elements into our food and water supply.  What has been done... must stop immediately.  All those wells in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico and Lousianna (and the other states I forgot to mention) have already been poisoned beyond repair... we do need clean water to live.

Are all of the farms organic?  No? Hmmmm, I won't if the chemicals they use are toxic, Yes?  Oh nooooo!

Well I'm all for domestic energy production. But my BIGGEST FEAR IS! WHEN PROFIT! is the only concern! our water and air and land will suffer...ONE BIG QUESTION?? WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THAT USE TO BE FRESH WATER? CAN IT BE CLEAN UP TO CAL .EPA.STANDERS OR BETTER?.. And Why USE FRESH WATER!! CANT THERE BE SOME OTHER WAY TO FRACKING OUT THE SHALE OIL? OUR DRINKING WATER IS TO IMPORTANT TO WASTE?..JUST REMEMBER.. LOVE CANAL. THREE MILE ISLAND..JUST REMEMBER HAST MAKE WASTE...AND WE ALL SUFFER

It's fascinating how the places where shale drilling is happening are always the largest that exist within our borders. In PA, someone said "most of the jobs are going to lawyers". The pristine waters are not being safeguarded, drillers are not being regulated and homeowners lose homes because of drilling accidents. Their property is permanently damaged and their physical well-being is in jeopardy.

There are always so, so many wonderful benefits. If only we would all just look away and let the industry grow the US reserves of energy resources.

It would be a terrible shame is the industry gets away with destroying everything that is so special and precious about America.

That would never happen.

Fracking is bad news for the health of people and the environment. Gasland is a brilliant movie that proves this fact. We can't let fracking practice destroy life in California. Monterey? That's where in 2007 people and animals got sick after aerial pesticide spraying they'd been told was safe. The damage from fracking would be another example of major folly with horrendous consequences. Don't do it.

the price of oil will not be cheaper. these jobs are not long term jobs. the companies have NO interest what-so-ever in compensating in anyway for the destuction they will cause. and then there is the issue of the chemicals and waste toxic water

Fracking is fine if they do it near Al Gore's house.

Bicoastal
Bicoastal

Folks, Please familiarize yourselves with what is happening with HORIZONTAL hydrofracking (very different from the vertical fracking) in the Marcellus Shale. As a bicoastal person, I have discovered that many friends, including professional conservationists, have unwittingly leased their drilling rights and are ending up with fracking fluid ponds in their back yards and horribly contaminated well water for miles around.

500 billion gallons of oil? And anyone with methane in their showers can file a class action and get rich enough to buy their own water treatment plant...help me out here, I'm not seeing a downside. I'd like you proud Californians to piss away all your jobs and rot in bankruptcy like some 3rd world charity case same as the next real American, but this would rid us of foreign oil while we are weaning onto alternative energy. Oh well, stooping to tyrants in oil countries will have to do because California is too good to drill. You're only screwin yourself here California.

You need to watch gas land. Its far more than just bad water

Alclaib
Alclaib

Watch?  Really?  You can learn from TV shows?  This planet, "Earth" had a violent beginning and I'm sure the end will be just as violent.  All of the chemical that "bad" stuff you are referring to was put here when the planet was first formed.  This is a very serious topic, and those of you are against the "frac" process, stop driving your cars, throw away your money and move to the outback away from civilization.  I guarantee you that if the tick's don't kill you, the wild animals will :)

I just watched Gasland, too and there is nothing short of disastrous to describe the process used regarding long/short term benefits. It should be banned completely. Unfortunately the US government is in the pocket of the oil industry and the citizens have got to organize themselves to rein the psycho-paths in. We also must seriously figure out how to wean ourselves off our oil addiction- if we want to be able to live, eat, breathe, drink, survive, as a species.

Just got finished watching Gasland on HBO. This will be an environmental disaster for the Monterey basin. What this article neglected to say is people are getting sick and dying from being exposed to the chemicals used in the fracking process. Increased asthma and cancer diagnosis's are being reported as a result of these toxic chemicals used in the fracking process.. Sorry no increased amount of jobs and getting off fossil fuels will convince me that the answer to our energy needs are though natural gas extraction. Why aren't we looking at solar, wind, hemp etc that DOESN'T pollute our society and create health problems. Sadly the GOP congress now wants to eliminate the EPA and repeal the health care bill (which could be improved) just when we will really need them. When you vote republican you vote against your own best interests (unless you are fabulously rich and can afford the best medial care money can buy). Thanks to DIck Cheney our country is toxic in more ways then one.

where are all of these people that are getting sick from  fracking lets have them come forward there isnt any you libs are to foney.

So what has been happening around the oil refineries for the past 100 years?  Are you still driving an automobile, or are you back to the horse and buggy?

Jako

"Sorry no increased amount of jobs and getting off fossil fuels will convince me that the answer to our energy needs are though natural gas extraction."

Whether you are personally convinced really won't make too much of a difference. Oil and gas are not the whole answer, but a necessary and unavoidable part of it. The oil and gas will be extracted, better it be done locally in a jurisdiction with environmental laws, than elsewhere.

"Why aren't we looking at solar, wind, hemp etc that DOESN'T pollute our society and create health problems." Solar and wind are being used, but still not economical or prevalent, even w. subsidies (which I'm for). Hemp is an altogether different story and while an interesting plant with many uses, it is not the long-term answer.

Jako
Jako

Better to use our own with our environment standards than to take it from somewhere else and give money to people who do not like US. And I would take this over coal, nuclear and dams. And yes ... I welcome a lot more solar too.

Hellozio
Hellozio

you need to know more about this . it is as dirty as coal and extremely unsafe. they use millions of litres of water which has highly toixc chemicals in them. this water cannot be cleaned or reused for anything. it cannot be evaporated because the chemicals go into the atmosphere

Alclaib
Alclaib

Really? Wow, did the "chemicals" not come from the Earth? Or were they imported from another planet?  The water can't be reused?  Do they store it like nuclear waste?  Come on you guys, give it a break.  The internet has a wealth of information.  Just ask Mr. Google.
