LA Daily News, Los Angeles Times Endorse Non-Incumbents in District 4 City Council Race

We can't remember the last time both big L.A. dailies endorsed a non-incumbent with relatively light campaign funding in one of the City Council races -- and, even more unusually, the District 4 endorsements in the LA Daily News and the Los Angeles Times this year are for separate indie candidates.

The Daily News went with weathered bike activist and hippie fave Stephen Box, whom the LA Weekly has likewise applauded for his social-media savvy and leadership in the two-wheeled fight against L.A.'s army of gas guzzlers.

The Times, on the other hand, went with Tomas O'Grady...

... who offers a more refined take on the neighborhood-empowering, salary-cutting shtick. He's certainly more the Times' type than radical Box, avoiding rants and charming the older, more conservative demographic with war-veteran outreach and a self-made-man back story.

Plus, O'Grady's pulling ahead in the cash department -- which the Times has made crystal clear is essential to earning a spot on its VIP list. As of February 19, O-Grady is besting Box's $40,000 with $53,000 (still $120,000 behind incumbent Tom LaBonge, of course).

Here's how the Times editorial board sees it:

Stephen Box has valuable experience with the city's neighborhood council system, but he's so immersed in the minutiae of city government that it's hard to understand what his larger vision consists of. Tomas O'Grady, meanwhile, is energetic and likable, but his proposals for the budget -- cutting the salaries and budgets of council members, making selective cuts elsewhere -- are more symbolic than meaningful. Nevertheless, O'Grady's background in business, devotion to environmental issues and hard work as an activist in L.A. Unified schools make him the most appealing alternative to LaBonge. The Times endorses O'Grady.

Update: Today, Stephen Box tells the Weekly: I think [the endorsement] is tepid at best... They gave us both a nod, but still couldn't commit."

He also finds a handful of discrepancies within the article, including the writer's mention of Box's detail-oriented approach as somehow a bad thing, and of him as the "Neighborhood Council guy," when O'Grady is the one who sits on a Neighborhood Council.

And to hell with it, anyway:

"To be quite honest, the endorsements that really tickly my fancy are from ... the people that vote," says Box. "The endorsements are nice from the institutions, but the essence of a grassoots campaign is meeting with people." (Also, to butter us up a little: "Between the two endorsements, the LA Weekly [coverage] makes me think, 'Man, we are on the right track.'" Awww.)

The only other non-incumbents the Times has endorsed for the 2011 municipal election are Rudy Martinez for District 14, who has all the wealth and PR skills of a seasoned city politician, and Rich Goodman for District 6 -- the single real surprise.

(OK, there's also Mitchell Englander for District 12, but the fact that the Times even mentions him as a non-incumbent is BS. There's no incumbent in the race, and Englander is current City Councilman Greig Smith's right-hand man, with half a million dollars in the campaign bank. Enough said.)

But back to District 4: Box is a risky choice for the Daily News, and we're glad to see such an open-book fringey fellow recognized mainstream. The endorsement piece doesn't mention Times pick O'Grady, but does take a shot at LaBonge:

Though LaBonge clearly has a deep commitment and historical understanding of L.A. and CD 4, he hasn't offered any evidence during his campaign -- or during his decade on the council - that he can help the city reinvent itself during this watershed moment.

By comparison, challenger Stephen Box has.

Box, a community activist with broad-based grass-roots support in the district, has fresh ideas about how to make the city work for its residents, an excitement about shaking up the status quo at City Hall and strong, though rough leadership skills -- the kind of which are in serious shortage around the horseshoe in council chambers.

We're not trying to kid ourselves. The totally gerrymandered District 4 -- which twists from the La Brea tarpits to the Hollywood Hills and up into the Valley -- will probably be stuck with LaBonge for another few years. But these two renegades have managed to stick their necks out from obscurity and see their names in print -- and that's a lot more than we're used to getting from L.A. City Hall's status-quo re-election machine.

Now, decide for yourself. HNN-TV interviews the challengers:

All the while painting himself as a model off fiscal responsibility, Mr. Box failed to disclose the multiple judgments recorded against him that belie this characterization:

SIX liens in the past ten years, including at least two state and one federal tax lien. This is the man to lead our city out of it's fiscal crisis???

O'Grady is a nice fellow and seems great at helping schools, but he is limited to one part of Los Feliz, and outside of that, Mr. O'Grady knows nothing. Box founded BudgetLA and went to every budget meeting (something the LA Times dismisses as minutiae). O'Grady went to none.

Box supported the Hollywood Grove HPOZ and fought LaBonge's attempts to close the St. Andrews Stairs so a friend could have a private staircase in her backyard, and Box fought LaBonge's demolition of a house on St. Andrews Place. All 3 are in Los Feliz and O'Grady was MIA on every one of them.

Box supports The Garfield Park and has stood with the CD #4 residents for years in their fight against LaBonge. The Garfield Park is one block from Los Feliz, but that's too far away for O'Grady to take notice.

LaBonge downsized Hollywood's Fire Station 82 by 75%, but O'Grady was again MIA, but Box supported the large full two acre station with quicker access to the hills.

Box has opposed the corrupt CRA project at 1601 N. Vine and has attended the Housing Comte to speak against corruption. Again, O'Grady was not present.

Box stood with other community leaders to Stop the DWP solar power scam on the ballot. No O'Grady.

O'Grady is a nice guy who is tarting out to do great things with one of two schools in Los Feliz. Besides that he only seems to know what printed in the newspapers.

Hey Schwarzwartz! WAKE UP! Haven't you ever noticed that our City Council is more inbred than a Romanoff family newborn? Our CD-4 family needs fresh blood desperately and we actually have a chance for a real choice this time! Please don't screw this up Schwartz!Have you ever noticed how LaBonge never actually says anything?....He won't commit to any position, on any issue and has no vision for the city whatsoever? He's the biggest gas-bag in the horseshoe whose never-ending blasts of hot air signify nothing! LaBonge is fiddling, even now, while Rome burns...and he's one of the 15 incompetents holding the lit match! And now the Democratic Party Machine wants him back in for four more years?...they will reward him like a Wall Street bankster after four years of massive fraud?...No way, Scwartz-wartz!!...and your comments are helping him!...so...Knock it off!O'Grady and Box are the first sign of hope for CD-4 in over 50 years! These challengers are fresh, exciting, and are giving Angelenos in CD-4 real hope for our future...hope for real change downtown...hope that the people still have a voice in our low-turnout city elections. But we need O'Grady and Box BOTH on the CD-4 ballot TOGETHER to get this job done! By tearing down O'Grady, you are playing right into LaBonge's hand! Think, man, think!Use your head, man! If you try to tear down O'Grady, as you've attempted to do in your comment, you're making a huge tactical error, and as a Box supporter, you should be ashamed. Stephen never tears down Tomas and he's right not to do so. He shows respect. And...Don't you realize that your man, Box, has a better chance of making the run-off WITH O'Grady in the race than without him? Use your head! The best-case scenario for CD-4 voters would be for them to DUMP LaBONGE NOW, in the primary, and give the good guys, O'Grady and Box a chance to make their case to the voters in the run-off election. By attempting to hurt a good guy like O'Grady you're only hurting yourself...even worse than an illiterate Tea-bagging voter from Kansas!Tomas O'Grady has a strong future focus. Tomas O'Grady understands the need for accountability and sustainability both economically and ecologically. Tomas O'Grady has a vision for LA and understands the corrupt machine. Tomas O'Grady is passionate, articulate, and a caring family man who's connected to his community and his district. If O'Grady can accomplish the miracle of persuading the stiff-necked LA Times endorsement committee, then he can certainly do the job at City Hall! Once they've met him, the CD-4 voters absolutely love O'Grady and with good reason...he's that compelling and intense about reform when you see him in action and in person. I know Stephen and have worked with him before. He's a good guy who deserves a chance. I support O'Grady, but I refuse to say anything negative that would hurt Box...or take votes from him. Don't you see?...That would help LaBonge!So...I support O'Grady fully, and have personally endorsed him....yet...I will not work against Stephen Box or his supporters or attempt to tear him down...ever. That would be suicide for all of us progressives seeking true and sweeping changes downtown...and it would help LaBonge!Go tear down LaBonge, Schwartzwartz, and take votes away from him with your toxic comments...not a great candidate like Tomas O'Grady!Give BOTH of the honest challengers a chance, Schwartzwartz, and if you must degrade someone...degrade the dishonest one who deserves it...the one who has much more machine money to work with...the one who's long-in-the-tooth, and way past-his-prime, and certainly the biggest bag of gas I've ever seen, perhaps of all time...the quivering clown, Tom LaBonge. It's time for a Clean Sweep of all our council incumbents and I will not tear down any honest citizen/leader/challenger as you have attempted to do to O'Grady. Think strategically! You're not helping your candidate and you're not helping us! Don't mess this up, dude! You vote for Box...fine! I'll vote for O'Grady...great!...But no one out there should vote LaBonge. No One.

I'm excited to hear of the endorsement for O'Grady as I feel he is the best candidate of the three. I have had the pleasure of meeting him when he was canvassing my neighboorhood so he IS certainly doing the "grassroots" measures...

His knowledgee of local politics, including the schools, budget, and measures is much more thorough than Mr. Box. Although it is great I must say, that the papers are endorsing so many of the challengers!
