Marcy Winograd Is Back: Anti-War Activist Kicks Off Congressional Campaign Against Janice Hahn and Debra Bowen

Marcy Winograd
Marcy Winograd will kick off her congressional campaign today, billing herself as the "true progressive" in a race that also includes liberal L.A. Councilwoman Janice Hahn and liberal Secretary of State Debra Bowen.

Winograd's entry into the race is bad news for Bowen, as she could split the Westside progressive vote and hand the seat to Hahn. That's surely what Hahn was counting on last week, when she got Bowen to sign a pro-Israel pledge. The pledge cleverly included criticism of Winograd, so by signing it, Bowen lost her chance to get Winograd's backing.

In an interview on Friday, Winograd said the pledge was a significant factor in her decision to run.

"What I take away from that pledge is a sense that anyone who signs it is going to be reticent to take a leadership role in Congress on any highly charged issue," she said.

Winograd moved last year to a home in Santa Monica that is about a half-mile outside the 36th Congressional District. She said she would not move back to the district, noting that the law requires only that she live in California.

Winograd also said she plans to run to help bring an end to the wars in the Middle East. Bowen has said much the same thing, vowing to campaign against the war in Afghanistan.

Debra Bowen
Asked if she was worried about playing a spoiler role for Bowen, Winograd said she likes Bowen and would like to see her continue as Secretary of State.

"I have great respect for Debra Bowen," she said. "I'm glad to see she is taking more of a leadership role on getting out of Afghanistan. That's good. I think my entering the race plays a role in shaping the debate."

Winograd ran twice against Rep. Jane Harman, most recently earning 41% of the vote in the 2010 Democratic primary.

Her decision to run this time around is reminiscent of her decision in 2010, in that both had a lot to do with Israel. In 2009, Harman was accused of a bizarre quid pro quo that involved the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the CIA, and the leak of a wiretapped phone call. The story barely made sense and fizzled out, but it prompted Winograd to get into the race.

In that campaign, Rep. Henry Waxman denounced some comments that Winograd had made about West Bank settlements. Winograd, who is Jewish, had said she did not want her tax dollars to support "occupation or extermination." It was those comments, along with some others, that Hahn also denounced in her pledge.

The Weekly called AIPAC spokesman Ari Goldberg to ask for his organization's views on Winograd's announcement and on the role of Israel in the campaign. Goldberg responded with the following (hilarious) voicemail message: "On background and not for attribution, we have no comment on that race."

(The Weekly did not consent to leave Goldberg's "no comment" on background.)

Bowen has been so effective as Sec. of State - keeping her major campaign promise to conduct an extensive review of our flawed touch screen voting machines - that she's earned my vote. Marcie is nice enough but has no chance in this field. Hahn is the party establishment which most people have, rightfully, tired.

Oh no not Marcy

Marcy will lose for the third time. Bowen will win narrowly.

I wish we as an electorate would grow up and throw out the frauds who use politics as a cash-cow for their pure self-interested gains. Harman? Hahn? Huh? If we only checked in with ourselves rather than vote like ideological lemmings...

There is no Savior people. But Winograd is the least objectionable candidate because she doesn't reek of the kind of shameless pandering and corruption that the rest of our local, city, state and congressional representatives leave behind. But at the end, we have to learn to stop being suckered by politicians and their wealthy special interest/corporate puppeteers.

And before getting suck into another election circus, remember, it's ourselves (and our cheap fears and nasty ill-will towards others (the poor, the immigrants, the Muslims, the left, the whatever etc.) we first have to come to terms with. Go on, try it, in the safety of your own home, in front of a mirror.

No matter where you live in the US, we need a real, fearless progressive voice like Marcy's in Congress. More than ever, in light of the terrifying takeover by the Tea Party and corporate right, it could make a difference - or THE difference!

I'm thrilled that Marcy decided to run and will work to help her win. I lived in that district for 25 years and know she'd be the perfect, strong, liberal voice for the people there.

Marcy has shown herself to be a real organizer who's courageous enough to take hard stands when hard stands are what we need. We've got enough Democrats who ever willing to bend with the wind.

If people are worried about vote splitting among the three Democratic candidates, they might encourage the incumbent career politicians -- Hahn and Bowen -- to step aside and devote themselves to the positions they already hold.

Good article with good analysis. While we all have our 'druthers among the three ladies, the best news is that Jane Harman will be gone.

Winograd's candidacy represents an important shift in American politics: a willingness to confront the immorality of the Zionist colonialists' violation of international law and the human rights of Palestinians, and America's complicity in both.

It confirms for others what many of us already knew and admired in Winograd: that her intelligence is matched not only by her insight but by her courage and integrity.

That combination is not only important to valid policy-making regarding the Middle East. It speaks to the kind of decision-making we can expect from Winograd on all the important issues that will come before her.

Jane Harman. Marcy Winograd. Janice Hahn. Debra Bowen.

Okay, I can take a hint, ladies.

Assuming men are allowed to vote in the 36th district, I will vote for Marcy.

Marcy Winograd's Congressional recent campaign in 2010 was one about what sort of country and citizenry we want to be. I've known Marcy for many years. She absolutely -- with no reservations -- is a real leader and deserves this district's voters' votes and word-of-mouth support in any possible run for the Congress that Jane Harman so ungraciously -- 3 months after winning the November 2010 election -- has resigned from.

Marcy Winograd has been an organized, genuine, hard working, committed and passionate activist in the Anti-War movement, the 2006-2008 Bush/Cheney impeachment movement (Kucinich's HR 333), Healthcare Reform movement and other progressive efforts to authentically restore the People's voice to national government. Marcy received close to 38% of the vote in the 2006 primary and over 41% when she ran against Jane Harman in last summer's June 8th primary.

She is not a machine or party sycophant who will humbly do what the party elders & attendant drones command. Marcy Winograd is a terrific individual and activist. She is a teacher & citizen who has inspired countless thousands over the last decade. She puts her time, money and -- perhaps most importantly -- her heart where her words are. Marcy is a thinker and a doer : an authentic voice the likes of which voters are hungry for in these cynical and hard economic times. Voters will side with her because Marcy is a real voice for for this district's voters who is aligned with their economic & social interests and -- importantly -- with their deeper values and their concerns about the directions this country has taken over the last decade.

I and hundreds others in the district strongly endorse any possible bid by Marcy Winograd in the forthcoming 2011 primary with Janice Hahn & Debra Bowen. We will work day and night for any possible Winograd 2011 campaign -- recognizing that defeat is not an option. Go Marcy, Go!!

I am a long time supporter of both Marcy Winograd and Debra Bowen. In fact, I hosted a fundraiser for Debra in my home when she ran the first time and think she has been an amazing Secretary of State. I think it is unfortunate that she fell for Hahn's trap and signed that Isreal pledge, because Marcy was just waiting to hear from Debra as to how progressive she would be on a variety of issues. Her supporters begged her to announce from the beginning. The fact that she waited so long shows that she was giving Debra a chance to champion her issues.

Although all three women are good liberals, I would give my vote to Marcy in this race, because we are operating in difficult times. Despite having a supposedly liberal president and two houses of Congress, the Democrats did not take advantage of their moment to try to reverse the trend of the past 30 years in which the rich have gotten richer and poor and middle class have stagnated. Instead they allowed the Tea Party to fill the void in the narrative and blame government for all the ills that have befallen average folks. And this is because they are as beholden to the corporations and the wealthy as the Republicans are. Obama needs to raise $1 billion to get re-elected. His number two campaign contributor in '08 was Goldman Sachs and he cannot afford to alienate them.Furthermore, unlike Debra and Janice, Marcy is not a career politician. She is a teacher in the inner city and has been an activist her whole life, founding Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles, which works for progressive issues both within and without the party. She comes from activist stock. I had the pleasure of knowing her late mother Teddi who was hosting PDLA meetings at her home the very month she passed away. While it is admirable that Debra now believes we need to get out of Afghanistan, Marcy was protesting that we not get into Afghanistan in the first place. Marcy was behind single payer health care and still believes it is the only way to provide both universal and affordable coverage. Marcy has been a supporter of the new green economy, and a New Deal style plan to rebuild our aging infrastructure.Because she is not a career politician, Marcy cannot be bought. She has not and will not take corporate money. She is an anti-establishment candidate which is what we so need in Washington right now. She has both principles and guts and will not back down. So yes, while all three women have good liberal credentials, Marcy has the best shot of staying true to her principles and fighting for her constituents in the Congress. Finally as for Israel, while it is not one of my main issues or I would venture to say a main issue of the voters of the 36th District, I do feel that for too long the Democratic Party has kowtowed to the AIPAC party line that Israel can do no wrong. I think Israel does do wrong very often and its actions are usually counterproductive for ensuring the peace that it professes to want. I think it takes great courage on Marcy's part to point this out, especially seeing as how it has alienated such powerful influencers as Henry Waxman and others. It again shows that she values principle over politics even if to her own detriment.

For these reasons and others, I wish my vote could be cast in the 36th so that it could be cast for Marcie. I too appreciate Debra Bowen (a lot) as Secretary of State and would continue to support her tenure there.

Sp, both Hahn and Bowen have agreed to sign a pro-Israel pledge, leaving only one candidate--herself Jewish--with enough integrity to say that human rights also apply to Palestinians--and that human responsibilities also apply to those who ethnically cleansed a million Palestinians from their homes in 1948 for the "crime" of not being Jewish.

It would appear that only Nixon can go to China.

Both Hahn & Bowen lower themselves by elevating another country's problems above our own City, State & Nation, just as did the district's uncharged but nevertheless criminal resigning representative after so recently misleading everyone once again as to her true intentions. Career politicians with the automatic Israel-1st response? Exactly the opposite of what this nation & world need! Marcy, like the great highschool teacher she is, is FAIR to everyone, something you cannot say at all about so-called 'democratic' Israel!

The 36th gets another shot to get it right this time, and send Marcy Winograd to Washington. With all the teabaggers, right-wingers & blue dogs running amuck in the House, we need a strong Progressive fighting for the intelligent, compassionate, SANE people in America. Marcy is that person!

Actually, with Bowen aping Hahn's cynical, short-sighted, distinclty parochial, ward heeling, one-sided "pledge," boldly revealing herself as tweedle-dee to Hahn's tweedle-dum, it's those foreign policy neo-cons who are dividing the relative "Hard Right," a distinctly smaller part of the electorate in this Congressional district.

Could you please be more specific?

Support for a Democracy is 'neo-conservative'?

What's considered 'neo-liberal'?

Noel whatever your name is:

Since your question is not only utterly non-specific, as well as merely rhetorical (like so many one confronts when commenting on this topic, where the conflict of propaganda and-those-who-bicker always seem to dominate the "discussion" with its familiar, farcical failure to accomplish anything), it is undeserving of a response.
