A raver enjoys a light show at 2007's Electric Daisy Carnival.
L.A.'s embattled mega-rave promoter Insomniac Events has banned bright LED lights from its parties, stating that they present a negative image of the events when "groups of music fans are sitting or lying on the floor gazing at the designs ..."

The light shows reflect "poorly and sends a false message of what the electronic dance music scene is about," the promoter stated on its Facebook page.

Insomniac is behind the Electric Daisly Carnival, which last year drew 160,000 ravers over two days to the publicly owned L.A. Coliseum.

The 16-and-older event got in hot water after a 15-year-old who got in subsequently succumbed to an ecstasy overdose. It also saw chaotic crowd conditions, with young people getting injured as dozens traversed barriers, 60, mostly drug-related arrests and more than 200 medical emergencies.

Coliseum officials and local leaders wondered if the parties, known for their ecstasy use, should be allowed at public venues.

The promoter has agreed to try to clean up the events with an 18-and-up policy, extra police and security, and now a no-LEDs rule.

Former LAPD narcotics officer Trinka Porrata, a rave expert, says the light rule only points to her argument that the parties are driven by illicit ecstasy use.

Light envelops a dancer at EDC.

Ecstasy dilates one's pupils and enhances the enjoyment of light in a psychedelic sense. Thus, raves are known for their lasers and amateur light shows in which young people sometimes gather around someone who's twirling glow sticks or LED beams.

The new rule, Poratta says, "is admitting that you know drug use is the primary point of the whole thing. These people are all on drugs. That's the point."

The promoter states that it has "introduced" a "Get Up and Dance Crew" (see video, below) that will prevent people from sitting on walkways and dance floors but that the LED ban is also needed to improve the image of the events.

Last week the Coliseum Commission reviewed plans by Insomniac to put on June's two-day Electric Daisy Carnival. Those plans include on-site medical staff that a doctor hired by the promoter said would be used to prevent "unnecessary transports" to hospitals.

The messed up part about this article is the video that they chose. I have been to about 20 raves in the past six months and have seen a person on virtually any drug you can name, but i have never in my life seen somebody tripping as hard as that kid in the video. What about the glovers that DONT do drugs? like me and my friends? it's our way of dancing and connecting and learning new things.

so ive been raving 3 years now, and i literalllyyyy love lightshows for my life. i give em, i get em, and sooo many people enjoy them just for what they are! i love love love giving lightshows to everyone under and over the influence because its honestly just for fun, and im a girl so it blows peoples minds when i give a lightshow cuz no one expects for girls to get good at lightshows ;] also when people are trippin tooo hard lightshows can DEFINITLY help them out and make them feel a lott betterrr :] however i can see why they would ban them too, cuz sometimes raver puddles can get in the way of others, but i agree with Big Mike about saying moshing is WAY scarier than lightshows fur sure. but even if i cantttt get my lights into EDC cuz im fur sureee gunna try, glowstickkssss are allowed :]]]]

Everyone should seriously consider boycotting this event.

EDC is about having fun, being free spirited, and PLUR. Slowly taking away simple rights like this is appalling. Our friends use lights as a way to find each other in a group of 100,000 people. In a dark area like this, how else do you expect to be able to find anyone? I would expect more injuries and mishaps because of this. People choose to celebrate and attend these events as they wish, and having lights not allowed will not change how people go to the event.

On another note, the event says no LED Lights, but nothing about EL Wire, so lets all get decked out in EL Wire and see what they have to say!

That LAPD officer is ignorant and cynical. It's officers like her that are the one's responsible for the profiling. That's like me saying all cops are crooked. They're not, I work with them. Like in any group there's good and bad people. If you saw mastery of skill those people have, you would stop and appreciate them also. I suppose everyone on Venice beach's boardwalk or the Promenade is on extacy because they gaze at preformer's.

So if lights are banned from raves will we just be looking at a black stage with no lights with just music? i mean people don't ban mosh-pits from metal and rock concerts, which im sure more people get hurt in these pits then a little led light. Its quit unfair that raves have new shitty rules now then any other music concert. whats next no baggy pants? gang affiliation? no cargo pants, you can hide drugs and stuff. No bright colors, means that you came to have fun. Christ, people are just making this wonderful scene into a Nazi takeover. And the people that judge it have never been to a rave. Like this Dennis Romero person.

What is your problem Dennis Romero, seriously what do you have against the electronic dance community?? You call this journalism!?!?

This is wrong, 185,000 people attended EDC. So out of 185,000...200 in the hospital. That = about .01 percent. One hundredth of a percent. BIG DEAL.

this whole situation about, sasha last year being stupid and taking thizzlez at the age of 15, not being smart about it, and killing herself, on top of tao being way oversold, to the point of where it took you 3 hours to get inside, only to wait in another long ass crowded line, is bulls**t. you do not need to ban gloves/ orbits, lights, poi, among other things. those are what makes raves super fun they broaden what you can do, because for a total of 24 hours over two day, almost everyone would get sick of just dancing. lightshows have been in the scene since the begining. you should not have the rite to suddenly put an end to one of the top three best things about raves. i say noone buys tickets for future insomniac events till this ban gets lifted...

Idiocy in action. This is one of the most stupid things I've heard of in the last ten years.

Just keep the event 18 and up, the water cheap and stop overselling tickets by 30,000 and we'll all be just fine.

I can't imagine EDC (My first EDC was in 2000) without blinky lights.

Meanwhile, lightshows go unabated at coachella 2011.

My dad tried to sell electronic jewelry based around the LEDs that he had held a patent on.

In the year 1979.

20 years later I walk into a South Bay Warehouse Party held by a crew from Stanford's Enchanted Broccoli Forest and every damn kid in there was wearing some form of blinky electronic LED jewelry. Made me want to beat my head against the wall.

It's all about the timing,

BTW, this ban on LED lights at parties is the most etarded thing I've ever heard of, and that includes Sarah Palin's Public Pronouncements.

Looks like the "Get up and Dance Crew" is more of a "Get up or we'll beat your face in Crew".

This is seriously one of the most asinine things I've ever heard of.

FYI, the get up and dance crew has been around for a long time, they are not new... just because you think it's "cool" to sit down in places were people are probably going to trip over you does not make the GU&DC asinine, go sit in a seat.. its a stadium... there are plenty of legit places to park you ass.

Maybe so but their tactics leave a lot to be desired. It looked like the put his hands behind his back and cuffed him before pulling him off the floor. That seems a little excessive.

I don't remember puddles being a big problem when there used to be ambient rooms.

Sanitized_inc

Go sit in your seats? It's a dance party.

The point made about the get up and dance crew as seen in this video is legit. The same task could easily be accomplished in a more plur-like fashion.

While, E-pools can indeed be annoying, they are certainly made all the worse when an event is sold way over capacity as EDC has been for the last three or four years.

Perhaps, given that it is a dance music event, INSOMNIAC should not be so greedy and make sure that people have room to move about safely.

the_dude

I only said sit in a seat as an alternative to sitting in the middle of a moving, dancing crowd...

No Lasers = No PLUR

the_dude
the_dude

PLUR.. does not = lasers... Peace Love Unity Respect...stay peaceful, show your fellow human love, stay united and take care of each other and respect everyone and the event itself... this does not mean drooling over oneself while someone sends your eyes into the back of your head... dance your butt of and enjoy the show on stage... you are there to see and listen to the artists...right? Take your light show home and enjoy it there no need to expose/embarrass yourself in public... remember something called the rave act? well your lucky thats not enforced because those light shows could cost you a pat down and few questions from the 5.0...
