Jean and Scott Adam, SoCal Missionaries on Global Yacht Tour, Taken Hostage by Somali Pirates, Dragged Back to Lair

Jean and Scott Adam, L.A.'s gutsiest missionaries, hand out Bibles in the Cook Islands
Update: Jean and Scott Adam were fatally shot on their boat by pirates, authorities said today -- even as U.S. Navy ships trailed the vessel. Two pirates were then killed and 13 were captured, according to reports. Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle, fellow voyagers from Seattle, were also killed.

Jean and Scott Adam, two outdoorsy Orange County missionaries who belong to Saint Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica and the Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey, decided in 2001 to take the Holy Word to the open seas, sailing to foreign lands on their custom-built "S/V Quest" and handing out Bibles to the natives.

But on February 18, their mission took a turn into darkness. An adventurous detour through the Indian Ocean led the SoCal couple (and their passengers, Seattle couple Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle) straight into skull-and-crossbones territory:

The 58-foot sloop was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea, just off the coast of Oman. From the plans Jean detailed online, it appears they were headed to Djibouti:

"Djibouti is a big refueling stop. I have NO idea what will happen in these ports, but perhaps we'll do some local touring. Due north is the Red Sea where we plan to tuck in when winds turn to the north."

Today, however, the hijackers have kidnapped the pair -- though they're being closely followed by the U.S. Navy. From the New York Daily News:

A Navy warship with a helicopter aboard was trailing the vessel as it cruised toward the northern Somali pirate stronghold of Puntland, two pirates and a Somali government official told The Associated Press.

A senior government official with knowledge of the incident also told CNN that a Navy ship was monitoring the vessel.

The Adams may be paying for the recent U.S. Federal court sentencing of Somali pirate Abduwali Abukhadir Muse, who was handed 34 years in prison just two days before the O.C. couple was targeted. The Associated Press guesses at a motive, and hints at the possible horrors to which the Adams could be subjected:

Earlier this week a Somali pirate told an Associated Press reporter in Somalia that pirates would target Americans in retaliation for the sentencing. The pirate, who identified himself by the name Hassan, said Americans would suffer "regrettable consequences."

Pirates have recently tied hostages upside down and dragged them in the sea, locked them in freezers, beaten them and used plastic ties around their genitals, the commander of the European Union anti-piracy force, Maj. Gen. Buster Howes told AP this month.

And the Adams are not alone. CNN reports that "some 685 sailors are currently being held for ransom aboard 30 ships off the Somali coastline, according to the International Maritime Organization."

On the Adams' website, where their GPS tracker is apparently not functioning (freaky), Jean explains one of their reasons for sailing the world: "Anytime we have workers on the boat or come into the dock and have an opportunity to talk to people we find more homes for our Bibles."

She also describes the arduous ordeal of unloading the holy books from the yacht, even after the "strained" fiasco of "getting those Bibles onto the boat as low as possible and without interfering with the function of a yacht at sea":

These Bibles have been "found" and lifted from underneath the floorboards. Then they have to be lifted into the cockpit and from there over the side and into the dinghy. Then, these cases have to be lifted out of the dinghy onto the dock, then to the driveway and into the taxi. Of course, when we get to our destinations we lift them once again into the office. This makes for a sore back in the short run and a stronger body in the long run.

The Santa Monica church to which the Adams belong -- a celeb-heavy Catholic hotspot whose members include Martin Sheen and Brooke Shields -- is pulling for their safe release from captivity. From CBN News:

Meanwhile, the couple's fellow church members from St. Monica's Catholic Church in California have been praying for the hostages' release.

"That's our hope today, that these great people who are taking this Holy Word and giving it to so many people across this world, that they will somehow return and find safety and come back home," their pastor, Lloyd Torgerson said.

Until then, stay tuned for updates.

Boy this made me laugh. Great stuff. Always happy to see some religious nutcases removed from the gene pool through their own stupidity. They won't be missed.

This greatly saddens me to hear of this injustice. But I truly know God will avenge this circumstance. I will in prayer for them and their families.

I think that only your special prayers will do the trick, so you'd better take this next week off of work and really pray hard, like you've never prayed before, even more than when you prayed for George Bush to lead this Christian nation into wars that have killed millions, of which tens of thousands of Christians died or were maimed. I, for one, am going to pray that your prayers take the form of a dove, which in turn will give thousands of free bibles to every yacht owner in the East Coast.

Look at this story: "Retired Somali couple found murdered in downtown Salt Lake City. They were distributing free Korans to poor Mormon children from their Winnebago as they traveled the American West. They inadvertently stumbled onto a crystal meth lab, where they were held hostage for many hours before being killed, apparently in retaliation for 9/11. Local police shot and killed the drug dealers, but confess that religion-based poverty in Utah forced many into the drug trade for survival. Friends of the couple in Somalia asked, "Why haven't we nuked Utah yet? Alabama as well?"

Dumbasses like them waste our air and tax money

Imprudent is perhaps a kinder word. The peoples of this part of the world suffer under soul-crushing poverty. They can't eat bibles. Somali piracy began when other countries started to routinely come into their waters and raid there fishing grounds. It doesn't justify murder, but this part of the world has been ripped off by the West for so long, I can really see why they don't give a damn.

How is it that a pleasure cruise like this gets a military escort? How much money did this escort cost the US taxpayer? And, then even that could not stop them from winning the Darwin Award for religious egotism and arrogance? What an all around waste of time, money, military, and trees in an era when help for people with real problems at home is under assault. These people got what they deserved, and the LA Weekly got it right from the beginning, and should only apologize for not going further with their criticisms of these wacko evangelicals.

HagbardCeline

They didn't get an escort; how do you think they got captured in the first place? Nobody deserves that kind of treatment, and as many people have commented, they weren't wacko evangelicals. Have a little respect for the dead?

A horrendous end to a terrible ordeal... one that the Navies of the world could control if only their governments would unleash them. I'll pray for the four of them.

I won't however, have any positive thoughts fo rthe reporter who tossed together this slimy excuse for journalism (I see some editor had the belated sense to remove the really offensive and insulting portions of the article, but only after it was published and commented upon).

I'm not Christian per se, but when I see the devout attacked and belittled by the media, I'm reminded how worthless the majority of the media has become. Of course, I expect the highbrow author of this litle tome-ette to be lookinging quite down her nose at us 'little folk' and our little comments, which, in her apparently twisted sense of right and wrong, actually help convince her she's right. After all, what do the 'little people' know, anyway?

Simone Wilson

Hey Mike. I read all of your comments, and very much take them into consideration. One thing I have found is that many commenters often make just as many assumptions as they feel the writer has made. Anyway, I agree: a horrendous end to a terrible ordeal.

Mrmalekevans

Seriously, Simone Wilson, Scott was my friend and teacher. He was no Bible thumper. Please do some homework and consider that you are describing real people with real loved ones. If you want to be sarcastic, write about clubbing or something.

I hope nothing like this happens to anyone you love, but if it does, you will no-doubt search the internet for information and encounter a writer as insenstive as you have been. I hope this message gets through.

Sorry for your loss, Mrmalekevans. I also just lost a close friend last week and know how painful that can be. His memorial is today.Unfortunately, this is Simone Wilson's style of 'journalism', if it can even be called that. She should stick to covering entertainment and less sensitive issues. Check out her post on Lara Logan earlier this month. It is simply horrendous.

Thank you for removing the offensive references to Bible-thumping conquistadors. However, LA Weekly should specify what corrections it made to this post and publicly apologize to the families of the murder victims.

Simone I'm disappointed. I was really looking forward to a good Djbouti joke somewhere in there. I even read it twice and to my dismay, nothing. Your editors deserve the T. Herman Zweibel for accidentally becoming The Onion.

Poor rich people yachting around the world with bibles to make their pleasure cruise look like a holy mission...? The Somali pirates are despicable and I'm sorry these people were killed. There is no god to protect naive bible thumpers? These people weren't killed because of their religion. They were killed by their own stupidity, a senseless faith, and vicious high-seas criminals (Captain Jack Sparrow, where are you?)

Geyerb
Geyerb

It's good to know that you know whether someone's faith is senseless or not. These people were living for something larger than themselves and they were called to distribute the Holy Word to those that do not have it. You have so much hate and ignorance in your comment. If you don't believe what these people believe then fine, but you don't have to write on an article concerning their bruttal murders about how they are were killed for 'their own stupidity' and 'a senseless faith'.

This article had many helpful facts, thanks. But the attitude was juvenile and smarmy, no thanks. Perhaps the editor will counsel the novice reporter on basic journalism ethics: people reported on are innocent until proven guilty, especially in this case of humanitarians spreading God's love. Forgiveness is extended to this novice reporter for such poor judgment and judgmental attitude. The mercy that the Adams' were sharing globally is available also to this merciless reporter. If her brand of tolerance for all except intolerable Bible-thumping can allow her to actually read the loving Gospel of John and receive the Lord Jesus' forgiveness offered to all open to accept willingly.

Bible thumping is a pejorative term. Shame on this reporter for such a bias article. The article is more about attacking these four souls than it is about the underlying facts of this terrible tragedy. Attributing this four people's adventure, armed with bible, to the Conquistadors of the past, is also very misplaced. Shame on the editor of the LAWeekly for allowing such a biased article under its name to be published.

"Like many a conquistador"?? Shame on you.

Kascasey

May these 4 people rest in peace.

As for the reporter.... Obviously, you find it more fun to see how sarcastic and funny you can be, rather than to truly think of the ultimate consequences that were possibly in store for these people.... And that ultimately came to pass. The fact that you can quote a Major General as to what pirates have done to people ... And then have the nerve to make constant flippant remarks, makes me question your sanity. You certainly have no capability of empathy.

Again..... My thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones and friends of the four people. I will remember their names.....

LA weekly needs to get rid of this reporter. This is the second time this week I stumbled upon an article by this reporter and the second time my jaw dropped by how disgusting it was.

Stay tuned for next week's feature of the girl who wore a red dress and allegedly she was raped. Simone will explain to us how wearing a red dress and being "raped" is not possible.

Wow, how little you know of that part of the world or people like this. What a sadly misinformed and biased article. I am also involved in getting Bibles into this part of the world and they are not forced on anyone in fact they are in very high demand.

I have seen people weep for joy, others dance with happiness when they receive a Bible there. For many it is a possession beyond their wildest dreams. To buy one on their wages after all the import duties for many can be equal to a month or more of wages.

Believe it or not there are thousands of Christians who value this, no one involved in the distribution of Bibles is a "Bible thumping conquistador". And now they are with the Lord, something else I doubt you can understand......very sad indeed.

Simone Wilson's reporting is quite flippant and disrespectful. One doubts she would write in such a tone about Muslims.

This article is all the more disgusting in light of the massacre of the four life-giving people.

You are a disgrace, Simone Wilson.

Its not just this reporter. The whole LA weekly staff "trys" to be funny and sarcastic but comes off as flippant and plays loos with the facts. I find this to be very shoddy journalism.
