West Hollywood Councilwoman Lindsey Horvath Invokes Arizona Shootings To Win Votes?

head_shot.jpg
West Hollywood City Councilwoman Lindsey Horvath
West Hollywood City Councilwoman Lindsey Horvath apparently thinks that West Hollywood's lively political culture is destined for a major tragedy if she's not elected and can help tone things down.

During a West Hollywood candidate's forum on Wednesday night, Horvath invoked the horrific events of Tucson, Arizona, where a lunatic murdered several people and attempted to kill Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

"I have reached out to so many different interests in this community," Horvath said during her closing statement at the debate. "People who don't support me, and I understand that because I think that's what a good leader does. We reach out for different perspectives and different opinions. We've seen the effects of what happens when you have polarizing, opposite opinions with the shootings in Arizona. And the type of leadership I wish to bring to our community is one where we bring people together."

Horvath, who was appointed to the City Council in 2009, is running on a well-financed, politically-connected slate with longtime incumbents Abbe Land and John Heilman.

On Wednesday night, she joined them and six challengers at a candidates' forum sponsored by the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and WeHo PAC. WeHo News has extensive coverage of the debate.

Three challengers aren't pleased that Horvath brought up the Arizona shootings as a way to win votes on Election Day, March 8.

"Obviously, it is an implicit and none-too-subtle attack on the opposition," former city councilman and challenging candidate Steve Martin writes in an email to L.A. Weekly. "Anyone who opposes the establishment machine is divisive and 'polarizing.' The connection with Arizona is to make the opposition appear to be wackos. Nice ghost writing by Abbe Land."

Challenging candidate Mito Aviles, who has held protests against Heilman, Land, and Horvath's policies, writes: "It is wildly inappropriate, and uncalled for, for Lindsey Horvath to be comparing West Hollywood politics to that of Arizona's unfortunate episode. Last time I checked, residents holding signs against entrenched politicians and anti-democracy couldn't be farther from an attempted assassination on an elected official."

Challenging candidate Lucas John writes in an email: "Threats to our democracy came in the form of bullets that sad day in Arizona. The bullets in West Hollywood just come in the form of Lindsey Horvath."

John and Aviles believe Horvath should have never been appointed to the City Council to fill the seat of a deceased council member. Instead, the challengers have said, council members John Heilman, Abbe Land, Jeff Prang, and John Duran should have called a special, democratic election and allowed voters to chose their own representative.

Challenger Scott Schmidt, who was just recently endorsed by Oscar-winning screenwriter and gay rights activist Dustin Lance Black, adds, "I believe that this campaign should be waged on the issues and the records of the candidates. I'm running my race as if I plan to be around on March 9th and hope others will do the same."

Horvath responds, telling the Weekly via email: "I did not compare West Hollywood politics to the shooting in Arizona. What I said was that the events in Arizona were a good reminder to all of us in public life to strive to keep political discourse civil and avoid overheated rhetoric. West Hollywood residents can disagree without resorting to polarization and personal attacks."

The true motive behind the Arizona rampage -- whether it was political or not -- is still unclear.

Horvath also made parallels between West Hollywood and the Arizona shootings when she spoke at a West Hollywood/Beverly Hills Democratic Club meeting on January 12 -- four days after the violence took place.

L.A. Weekly will run an in-depth cover story on the West Hollywood City Council race on Thursday, February 17.

Please don't let us get stuck with this Lindsay Horvath. She has nothing of substance to say, so she's reaching for bizarre..parralels? That she says are not parralels? Why doesn't she say something that really DOES have to do with West Hollywood?

Being an educated voter you understand that the endorsements by these self appointed back slapping "progressive clubs" are only to target the ignorant voters. The ones who don't do any research on their own. To the educated voter they are hog wash, we know this. But Im shocked and disappointed at Gavin Newsom's endorsement of Lindsey Horvath. If you would like to contact the Lt. Governor please do... here is his web site- please express your disappointment. As he will rely on votes from West Hollywood in any future state wide election. http://www.ltg.ca.gov/m_contac... You can also call his office at Telephone: (916) 445-8994 Please, please do so!

Terrible attacks!!?? Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha How about terrible acts? Like taking the democratic process away from the city of west hollywood based on the cost of an election while 100 million dollars sits in the bank. "Were AAA bond certified" "we haven't had to lay anyone off" but a special election and its costs? Hell no! Thats terrible!

Well, not laying anyone off and money in the bank are real accomplishments in times like these, and the incumbents can take credit for it, but not for WeHo's excellent "location" - - we're not talking Bell or Cudahy here -- that helped put all this money in the safe deposit box. The question, it seems to me, is whether it's worth all the development, high rises, traffic etc.

At the start, let me say that I have been leaving comments on this controversy for a while and the bloggers remove them. Having written a political blog for over 10 years (before the word was even coined) I have never removed a comment. I mention that because I find it truly indicative of the closed circle of people who are collectively launching a campaign that is attacking the 3 current council members who are running and their only agenda is that of electing people in their circle.

Secondly I wonder what is the actual diversity of this circle. Congratulations on Scott receiving the endorsement of Lance Black but I hardly see what that has to do with labor, law enforcement, national leaders, local & state leaders, dozens of community organizers, clubs, non-profits etc. Not to put the onus on Lance but what criteria is both the endorsement given and applied? It certainly demonstrates a peculiar sensibility of public service.

As a feminist, a bisexual senior woman who has participated with many WeHo events, it is hardly just a city of identical social circles. As a public health administrator who, in 1983, had the terrible task of telling first the client at the OC Free Clinic that he had some unknown illness that has yet to be named, as a woman who worked on the NO on 6 campaign and the NO on 8 campaign, as a state and local elected leader in NOW; I want to say that the City of West Hollywood is alive, breathing, contributing to life in 2011. It is not a romantic diorama of John Reichy’s City of Night.

Schools, libraries, safe streets are all landmarks indicating that the queer community is seeking hetero-normative rights to have and raise families. WeHo is not under a dome untouched by progress. I suppose, we will always call it Boy’s Town, but to Ricky Martin & Elton John, they may be looking for another type of play town for their boys.

These terrible attacks, based on some imaginary never-never land in the middle of Los Angeles County are sign posts themselves. The people putting these forth are not conscious, caring, diverse, inclusive people. They are not offering lists of policies, advances, positions, votes or accomplishments. They are a violent, irresponsible, shallow circle of people who simply want what they want because they want it and their method is to destroy anyone or anything that they perceive as an obstacle.

The citizens of West Hollywood deserve so much more than this little tribe can ever imagine, certainly never deliver.

Zoe Nicholson, we have never removed any of your comments, as you claim above. The statement is untrue.

Actually Lance Black has quite a good "sense of public service" via his extensive involvemement with the organization that brought the current, successful federal court challenge to Prop. H8 after other efforts had failed. And yes he had to rock a few hide bound "establishment" boats to get there.

I don't deny your involvement in many WeHo events. But Horvath only lived there 18 months prior to her appoinment. Looks to me that you're better qualified. Better yet Steve Martin's been around quite a while and has offered plenty of "policies, positions, votes (and) accomplishments." And the rather modest proposal denying yet another safe haven for already ubiquitous greedhead, high rise developers doesn't necessarily mean "there goes the neighborhood" does it?

Then you go off the deep end identifying dissent and political give and take with "terrible attacks" and brand the opposing candidates as "not caring, diverse, inclusive" as well as a classic pot calling the kettle black accusation that "their only agenda is that of electing people in their circle." You once again prove the point that Steve Martin made, as quoted in the article above.

Once again, Patrick Range McDonald sickens us with his extreme bias. He is quite the character assassin. Lindsey Horvath is just the latest in a string of McDonald's victims. In McDonald's deRanged mind, Ms. Horvath joins a slew of activists and electeds such as Don Duncan, John Heilman, Abbe Land and Geoff Kors. These folks have done a lot for the progressive community, unlike McDonald and the new LA Weekly. The Weekly has spiraled down so low and so fast, it is hard to remember when it actually had a progressive voice in Los Angeles. Let's face it, the new Weekly and writers like McDonald coexist to sell sex, weed and a conservative bias.

McDonald deRanged? Does this mean, Mr. Guest, that you're taking Ms. Horvath's deranged Arizona metaphor to a new deRanged level? Will you and Ms. Horvath now seek to have Mr. McDonald committed as a "deRanged character assassin?" We will stay tuned.

I find what passes for political discourse amongst the commenters here highly entertaining. Nothing like high drama and low information. Classy.

For those who only believe what the mainstream media offers, the shootings in Arizona had nothing to do with political discourse and avoid overheated rhetoric. A psychotic kid off his meds had everything to do with the shooting. Lindsey's dishonesty proves why she has no place in elected office, and why the three incumbents need to be voted out.

That right Woody! We MUST elect 3 NEW people. Or the change will not be fast enough. We deserve change NOW!

In the recent candidate's forum, the 3 incumbents expressed their "pride" in their "accomplishments" more times that I could keep track ofl. When we began our quest for cityhood, the motivatng factors were high rents, demolition of affordable housing, displacement of seniors and other long time residents, citizens lack of voice in government, traffic congestion, no parking, etc. Today, 27 or so years later, the main issues are high rents, demolition of affordable housing, displacement of seniors and other long time residents, citizen's lack of voice in government, traffic congestion, no parking, etc. I wonder exactly what it is that they are so proud of, and why the people of West Holllywood are not as proud of them as they are of themselves. All they have given us is more of the same but in much bigger stronger doses. It seems the most important "achievement that John Heilman can come up with is that "Santa Monica Blvd looks alot better than it used to." John & Abbe have been in office far too long. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is time for a big time change. I would hope we could unseat all 3 incumbents, but otherwise one at a time is a start afinally improving the qualityof life for all residents of West Hollywood. We deserve better.

Maybe like me she ran into character actor Danny Trejo yesterday on the streets of West Hollywood and is now ready to declare Martial Law in The Creative City. Relax Lindsey: those are only movies and Mr. Trejo is just playing rather boistrous characters in them. In real life, in person, he's actually quite pleasant, often strolling the Venice Boardwalk with his family on weekends.

Really disgusting. If anyone disagrees with her, she labels them as dangerous? Are you sure she's not a Republican?

Guest

She was a Republican in college and was a big supporter of Bush and the Iraq invasion. She wrote an article for her school paper. Google it and see for yourself.

thomasjcoleman

Support of anyone as unqualified as Bushtail was to be President, and his criminal invasion, occupation and destruction of Iraq based on lightweight lies, would themselves be instant defacto disqualifiers for any public office, wouldn't they? Someone needs to clear this up!

Unbelievable! I really hope West Hollywood can save their city from the likes of these three incumbents. As a resident of LA, I can see the corruption in the West Hollywood politics seem like that of the other small cites we have seen unearthed. I just cant believe a city that claims to be a progressive hot spot, has someone like this on their council. She makes West Hollywood look like a joke. A very sad joke.
