Alexandra Wallace: Was UCLA 'Asians in the Library' Video One Big Publicity Stunt?

ucla1.jpeg
Co-Ed Magazine
The infamous Alexandra Wallace
Update: Wallace drops out of UCLA, right after school officials announce she will not be punished for her racist rant. Details after the jump.

Alexandra Wallace may not be as dumb as she acts. For a UCLA pity admit whose poli-sci career is obviously going nowhere, what could be better for her best shot -- reality TV with a side of B-list modeling -- than a little infamy?

At first, YouTube commenters condemned Wallace's "Asians in the Library" video as the biggest mistake of her life. In a day-after apology letter to the Daily Bruin, she wrote, "I cannot explain what possessed me to approach the subject as I did, and if I could undo it, I would."

But wait.

What bad, exactly, has come of Wallace's tirade? Though the outrage was vitriolic Sunday evening, and Wallace even reported receiving death threats to the UC Police Department, all that anger quickly erupted into an absurd Internet carnival of dubstep remixes, hot bikini pics (if nothing else, who wouldn't enjoy a good rage-screw?) and comedic parodies, to the point where her words became a harmless meme that could do no hurt.

(They've even done some good! See: "Alexandra Wallace-Inspired 'Ching Chong' T-Shirts to Fund Japan Relief Efforts.")

Now, she's got campus police at her beck and call, and the UCLA chancellor is lashing out harder at "uncivil discourse" in response to the video than at the video itself.

UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton, who's gotten more press action this week than a Japanese news correspondant, told the LA Weekly yesterday that "right now, the campus is focused on ensuring [Wallace's] well-being so she can complete her finals."

And what of her highly publicized potential punishment? "I'll say that there is no ongoing discussion about that at this time," Hampton concluded. (Rightly so: Nothing in the student code of conduct could have overridden her First Amendment rights. Just in case anyone out there is still crying "hate speech.")

So now, not only does the notorious library "epiphanizer" have the full sympathies of campus authorities, she's gained millions of Internet followers and an instant household name. Playboy and L.A. porn empire Vivid Entertainment would have her in a second.

It's genius, really. Better than Paris could have pulled. But we're so onto it.

Leave it up to digital-age dinosaur Dad to give it all away on his Facebook page. The Silicon Valley Mercury News revealed yesterday that John Wallace had been all but pushing for his daughter's rise to infamy:

"My daughter wants to start a blog," wrote Wallace's dad on his Facebook page.

John Wallace, a Sacramento-area retail developer, posted on Friday at 11:17 a.m.: "She's asking for domain suggestions for 'Asians on their cellphones in the library!' She's shooting videos as I write."

John Wallace also posted March 3 that his daughter was selected for the audience of MTV's "Jersey Shore" reunion show.

Thus outing his daughter as a blatant fame-monger, and proving that parents on Facebook is always a bad idea.

As for you, Alexandra Wallace: We'd recommend you sign some deals, stat (girl-on-girl with Rebecca Black? Please?), before your inevitable fade into that apocalyptic 21st century wasteland where the virals of yesterday -- Ted Williams, double-rainbow guy, cute little girl who sang cute -- go to die.

Because from where we're sitting, you've still got a good week's worth of SEO to cash in on. Cha-ching!

Update: The Associated Press confirms what we've all known since Day One -- that "Asians in the Library" did not, and could not, seeing as we live in a free country, breach UCLA policy. From today's report:

UCLA's vice chancellor for student affairs, Janina Montero, said in a statement Friday that Alexandra Wallace's three-minute video did not violate the student code of conduct.

Montero says the video was misguided and disrespectful, but it did not seek to harm or threaten a specific person or group.

And in other amusing aftermath: "Angry Black Cowboy Responds to Alexandra Wallace: 'Bruce Lee Was Asian!!' (VIDEO)."

Update: The Daily Bruin just broke the news that -- on the same day as the vice chancellor's big announcement -- Wallace has decided to drop out of UCLA. Here's her letter of resignation:

In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture. I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video. Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn't erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action.

I made a mistake. My mistake, however, has lead to the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats, and being ostracized from an entire community. Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA.

Wait. Did she just use the word "ostracize" in a sentence?

On the other hand, it's perfectly OK for UCLA professor Kent Wong to call for DREAM Act activists to replace those "old white men" in the Senate.

Racist statements are only a problem if they are uttered by whites against non-whites; otherwise, they're progressive and inspiring.

Alexandra Wallace proved how one viral video can lead someone to fame. We have all seen the untalented Rebecca Black’s “Friday” video and it is famous because our society has given in to the stupidity of supporting people like her, even if it is simply so we can have a good laugh (this is an interesting related article: http://mashable.com/2011/03/24.... Personally I want to believe that this girl made the video to gain self-recognition, or else she is just completely ignorant and idiotic. Even if it was a publicity stunt, it gave her a bad name. If not, no matter how much she apologizes she will never be able to take back her online self-presentation and the identity that she presented to the world. With that said, she is probably experiencing “Postcyberdisclosure panic” (PCDP) which is a panic concerning what you posted online. She put out these apology statements probably trying to save her image and relieve some of her PCDP. A problem with expressing yourself freely on the Internet is that people do not self-edit as much. They may forget how many people are actually seeing what is being put out there. Moral of the story: do not forget that people can see what you put online!

Seriously.... I think that someone set the whole thing up to make a statement about the Barbie Doll- dumb blond stereotype. If anything this video should scare the life out of every parent who ever raised a person who might actually think this way. She was just bold enough to say what many people probably think.

GEEZE...we have a ton of real education to do.Thanks for reminding us as to how far we have to grow.

Being an attractive, buxom blonde likely helped to fuel the fire of resentment toward her and escalated the reaction to her to the level of hysteria.

Excerpts from a New York Times article on the treatment of black students in Asia:

African students at a Beijing language institute began boycotting classes today to protest what they feel is racism in China, and interracial clashes were reported in another city after two weeks of racial unrest.

On Tuesday, about 2,000 Chinese students at the Beijing Languages Institute boycotted classes and held a march to protest what they said were attacks on Chinese women by African men. Most of the Chinese returned to classes today, but the institute's 500 African students began boycotting classes themselves to protest what they described as racist attitudes and policies.

The African students said they did not dare hold a demonstration in the current tense atmosphere, but that they would continue to boycott classes until the police released African students in the eastern city of Nanjing who have been charged with starting a Christmas Eve fight in which 11 Chinese were injured. That brawl touched off demonstrations in Nanjing that have spread to other cities.. . .

Meanwhile, a dozen African students in the central Chinese city of Wuhan have been isolated after an attack on them Saturday by hundreds of Chinese students, according to reports reaching Beijing. The Associated Press also quoted sources in Wuhan as saying that a Sri Lankan student had been beaten up, apparently because of his dark skin.. . .

this jackass knew EXACTLY what she was saying and doing when she made the video. I don't buy her letter for a NANOSECOND, especially after her father ADMITTED that she was looking for domain names and they were working together...so bullshit on THAT.

SHAME on Vice Chancellor Montero for caving. "did not seek to harm or threaten a specific person or group"?! Are you SERIOUS? If this was anyone OTHER than a stupid white chick, you'd have their walking papers ready.

just face it. it was rascist. mocking another race's language is very racist. if it was a white guy talking about how loud black people are in the library and goes on to make them by saying "nigga, 40oz, and blunts" would be wrong. but since it's a white chick with a nice rack, you turn the other cheek. not to mention she said "maybe they are calling family in japan, that tsunami was but still." assuming they were japanese. period. but at they same time we cant act angry. instead showing hate, we should show her the way.what she did was racist, but maybe she's not racist, maybe she's just ignorant. i think every student should be taught a class on a culture other than thier own. because let's face it. the US is the melting pot, we should be not be mocking other's languages, we should all just chill.

The reality is that there is not one Asian country (not Mexico either) that comes anywhere close to the U.S. in terms of tolerance or allowing immigration. In Singapore as an example, people who overstay their visas are caned.

There is more than a little hypocrisy in all the self-righteous posturing.

Have you heard about the Chinese retard? Her parents named her Sum Ting Wong.

How do Chinks come up with names for their kids? By throwing silverware down the stairs. If it goes ping, ching, pong, that’s what they name their kids.

What do you call a gook with one testicle? What Went Wong.

What do you call a fat Chinaman? A Chunk.

Why did the Romans make straight roads? So gooks couldn't build corner shops.

Why did the gook buy thimbles? He needed condoms.

How do you blind a gook?Put a windshield in front of them.

"has lead to the harassment of my family" should have read "has led to the harassment of my family" ... how did none of her publicists catch that?

Seriously, I hope this author is wrong and AW's actions cause her to reflect, commit to learning about our nation's (and world's) deeply racist history and present, and change her ways. It's possible -- lots of former racists are now antiracist organizers in the current freedom struggle.

the stupidest thing she said in the video was about in america no one uses the cellphone in the library. Girl, are you dumb?! Every college, every public library, there are people that uses their cellphones. Im sure Blacks, Hispanics, Whites, Muslims, etc all use their cellphones in the library. But she only attacks Asains, come on now. In America, people just uses cellphones everywhere

This girl once again proves why there are so many dumb blond jokes! On the serious side, this is not just her instantaneous rant but it goes deeper than that. She has been harboring her feeling and belief for so long that it now just exploded. She knows exactly what she is saying and doing. Just imagine people like her with this kind of feeling and belief have ever gotten to the position of power and they act out their rage and hatred. Just think about it, Hitler and his cohorts in their youth already showed their hatred toward Jewish people, then when they got to the position of power, look at what they did to the Jewish people. It's frightening.

Rebecca black is 13 years old. Alexandra Wallace, whatever her aspirations, is not that much older. I have no idea why bloggers of all stripes - even those legitimized by the LA Weekly! - think it is OK to demonize young women for the sake of a little snark.

Do you think either of these women would be inclined to pull such lame stunts if the infotainment industry didn't send messages to our daughters that the ONLY way to make a name for yourself is to blatantly sexualize and/or humiliate yourself, put it up for the world to see, and accept attack as the best form of attention you can receive?

Take a little responsibility for the Alexandra Wallace's of the world. While you snigger, there are thousands like her who inside, feel so worthless that THIS is the best they can hope for.

Yes, she did mean what she said but she was also looking to cash in b/c she was an unsuccessful model. Why is there a double standard here? If she made fun of Blacks or Muslims, there would be a national outcry but she makes fun of Asians and nothing happens. She is a dumb blonde who wasn't smart enough to get into UCLA and gets accepted after boning the Chancellor. Now he can't do anything b/c she will announce in public that she got in b/c she is screwing his brains out and his family has no clue. So I guess you can say she is smart in a way.

This young lady said,"Asians", not gook, fishheads, zipperheads, slanteye etc.etc. There are many words used in racist remarks to offend every race of people on earth. As far as making fun of the way some people talk, everyone sometime or another has done this. If they say that they have not, they are LIARS! PERIOD! Usually it's the young people who are guilty of this form of racism, or it's people who were born sometime between back in the 1930's to the 1970's. I've personally seen the "invasion" of Asians in my community in Orange County, Calif. and can remember the "Little Siagon" freeway sign being destroyed over and over again on the Garden Grove Freeway. It is unfortunate that these people were offended by the remarks that this young lady made, but this is "America" and we are free to offend anyone for any reason at any time! You are allowed to say anything to anyone without repercussions that would harm you physically. As far a feelings are concerned, it is time people start not letting words hurt them. For all the "Pansies" out there "Sorry", Sometimes the truth hurts!

I agree what she said is freedom of speech. But, the backlash she received is warranted. I'm sure the Asian population in UCLA are mainly upstanding citizens. It's the Chinese in LA that don't go to UCLA and are convicted felons that Alexandra has to be worried about. They would probably take offense to the video. In retrospect their is no difference to what Miss Wallace stated, to a similar racial rant from say, Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh. But, Mr. Beck and Limbaugh make millions of dollars a year to hire a small army to protect them from death threats. Miss Wallace is not as fortunate.

Chris Miller
Chris Miller

You're wrong; Limbaugh is careful to mince his words so as to offend only the weakest groups using the safest and most popular hate-speech; like any bully and coward, he is extremely careful only to attack those groups who can't hurt him back. He is engaged in commercial hate-speech, and so of course he capitalizes on public fickleness; 100 years ago he'd be bashing blacks and jews, but today he knows to pick safer targets.

Jon
Jon

Jeff, you are right about so many things. Beginning with: "this is "America" and we are free to offend anyone for any reason at any time! You are allowed to say anything to anyone without repercussions that would harm you physically."

This "freedom" also extends to all the people that got offended. They have the right to mock her and ridicule her. And as far as we know, no physical harm has been done to Alexandra Wallace. So why are you so riled up?

"As far a feelings are concerned, it is time people start not letting words hurt them."Maybe that's just what Alexandra Wallace should do too. Just not let any of the negative comments get to her.

I wonder how things would have panned out if Alexandra Wallace made a video about African Americans. I wonder if you would have defended her the same.

Chris Miller
Chris Miller

I see what you're getting at, i.e. how people twist Free Speech into a license to injure, harm, distress and upset others with some kind of impunity; for example, Rush Limbaush says things like "there's no such thing as a right not to be offended," by which of course he claims the right to SLUR whomever he pleases-- but he conveniently only slurs those whom he feels SAFE in so doing

And you're right, there's a lot of hypocrisy there, in that the most powerful grroups get the most protection-- which is ironic, because they claim to need it due to their LACK of power against the majority, thus requiring special consideration. And so, the LESS powerful and organized minorities get less protection, when logically they should get more, and the issue is popularity not principle.

Vasu

The First Amendment is not an excuse to sink to the lowest common denominator. And even if a lot of people have mocked other people's accents, it doesn't mean that many don't regret it later on. People who pretend that putting someone down is something acceptable are deceiving themselves. Your attitude is an embarrassment, buddy. Most grown-up Americans feel the same way. Try to join us!

Chris Miller
Chris Miller

Legally, the First Amendment does not protect her from being expelled from UCLA for stating an unpopular opinion, it simply protects one from being prosecuted.  I'm quite certain that the student policy handbook contains sections about racial, cultural or ethnic intolerance-- and that's three strikes.  Here, she practically pulls her eyes back while saying "AH SO! AH SO!" in a classic racist "Chinaman impression," while spewing hate like Archie Bunker on steroids; but still she wasn't expelled, but simply made such a racist ass of herself that people made it clear that she wasn't welcome at a school that has a high Asian population, and which prides itself on enlightenment and tolerance for ethnic diversity.

RobE
RobE

I remember Garden Grove before the influx of Vietnamese: it was a shithole and sinking deeper and deeper. Not that it is all that great now, but what the Vietnamese have brought to it has been a godsend for the place.

And the resentment by the rightwing xenophobes was rather ironic considering it was their asinine policies (i.e., the way they handled the Vietnam War, beginning with the Eisenhower Administration) that created the immigration of folks from that country to Orange County to begin with

If it is one thing Republicans are good at it is blowback. Everything they do turns to shit.

To be fair, the embroilment of the United States in the Vietnam conflict was NOT a partisan affair. Marilyn Johnson's "The Vietnam Wars" is an excellent book for anyone interested.

"You are allowed to say anything to anyone without repercussions that would harm you physically."

Uh, no, you're not. Google "fighting words" and understand that your First Amendment right ends where my fist contacts your nose. In other words, your right to be obnoxious doesn't protect you from being punched.

Sanjuana Gabriela Enríquez Gal
Sanjuana Gabriela Enríquez Gal

Here's a secret. Sometimes people who spout hate speech WANT you to punch them - because it makes them the martyr and makes them look good. You look bad

Sometimes ignoring them is the best step

Chris Miller
Chris Miller

Yeah before you spout off about the law, try going to a law school that doesn't have "Google" in the title. Fighting Words are not protected by the First Amendment, but neither do they allow others to take the law into their own hands. They simply allow you to SUE the other person in court, as well as arrest them for disorderly conduct etc.But NO law grants a carte blanche for harming others-- and only a complete idiot would think so.

Veskie
Veskie

Assault and battery ring a bell? Yeah, you go and punch someone. See who the courts will prosecute? The offender spouting words or the assaulter who resorted to physical violence.

Guest
Guest

Uh... Bob... while I might not agree with what other people have to say, what others have to say does not (and NEVER does) give you the right to punch someone in the nose. The saying is that your rights end where another person's nose begins. Even though you and I are offended by what Wallace said, we have no right whatsoever to assault her physically.

It's absolutely crazy to think that there's anyone out there that actually believes they have the right to assault another person for merely being an idiot loudmouth.

Sorry if asians are "invading" your community but you better get used to it because soon you might even be working for them. Everyone is racist to some extent, but its plain stupidity to post your rants online for the world to see...or even worse, talk about such sensitive matters such as the tsunami at a time like this.

RobE
RobE

The main thing white xenophobes hate about Asians is that they drive the grading curve higher at school. I wish I was kidding about that, but I remember an incident in the 1980's where white parents were complaining to school administrators in Garden Grove that the standard set by the Asian immigrant students was "unfair" to the caucasian kids. America has always been in love with mediocrity and anti-intellectualism and wants to be rewarded for it. That is why we are well on our way to being a third world country right now.

I don't know why people even care about what one person said about asians in the library. There are horrible things going on in the world, and you are getting mad about one woman making stupid comments about rude asians in the library? How many comments do you make about people based on their appearance...if they are fat, or ugly, etc. If you are doing that, you are just as much of a douchebag as someone else. Furthermore, if you are openly nasty to people because you don't like what they say then you are the douchebag.
