A young man who had gotten into a minor accident and stepped out onto the 110 North in the wee hours this morning -- only to be fatally hit by a 2008 Mazda Tribute trying to avoid the crash's buildup -- has been identified as 19-year-old Bernabe Basurto.

A preliminary California Highway Patrol investigation found that Basurto had been involved in an accident just minutes before his death, and emerged from his vehicle to deal with that scene.

"A separate vehicle was traveling in the number 3 lane approaching the prior traffic collision," reads the CHP report...

"The driver changed lanes to the number 2 lane to avoid hitting the vehicles stopped in the number three lane, and subsequently struck the pedestrian."

Basurto was hit at about 1:40 a.m, just north of Century Boulevard, and was declared dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the 60-year-old man who hit him was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

CSU Long Beach spokesman Rick Gloady tells us Basurto was a sophomore at the university (though he did not live on campus), and began taking classes there in Fall 2009. He was planning to major in business.

If you have any additional information about Bernabe Basurto or what may have happened on the 110 last night, please let us know.

I've known him since sixth grade...no doubt that god takes the best. He was such a gentleman, sweetheart, extremely intelligent and with a bright future ahead of him. More than a friend, he was a brother to me. He sure knew how to brighten everyone's day even if his was gloomy. You never saw him sad. He certainly didn't deserve this. Unfortunately, there is no should've or could've. I am simply glad that we conversed this week, it was as if that was his goodbye. I will never forget him & he will remain in my heart forever. My condolences and prayers go out to his family. I know he is in a better place and I am thankful to god that he gave me the opportunity to be part of his life<3

I met Bernabe Basurto from Cal State LB. He was a mannered, respectful, young man. He was a great friend to me who made a difference in not only my life but all of those who were close to him. It saddens me as I just found out of this tragedy, just minutes ago, honestly it breaks my heart into pieces............................I can only pause because there aren't enough words to describe how much he meant. I can only hope that he is resting in peace and is in a better place than what this cruel world has to offer.

Much love and respect,Carlos A. Chavarin

PS. I will forever miss you brother.
