Free the pigs.
Animal rights nuts or provocateurs who will make you think before you eat?

You decide. Either way, you might want to avoid having lunch at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica tomorrow.

Because the save-the-piggies brigade will be in full effect there Thursday to show-and-tell about the "the brutal treatment of animals for food," according to a statement. (But they're so tasty).

That's right, Mercy For Animals will hold a lunchtime (and dinnertime) "Farm to Fridge" demo at the Promenade Thursday (11 a.m. to noon and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.) complete with ...

-Activists wearing iPad-embedded t-shirts. The devices will show video of mistreated farm animals.

-"Billboard-sized banners with images of calves, hens, and pigs confined on factory farms."

Mmm. Can't wait.

Here's the group's statement:

Americans have the right to know where their food comes from, and there is growing concern over the cruel treatment of farmed animals. Consumers are not often shown the intensive confinement, abusive handling, painful mutilations, careless neglect, and merciless slaughter of the nearly 10 billion sentient animals per year destined to end up on our plates.

So be there.

And remember, if you show, it would be rude to be scarfing down pork rinds and hot dogs during the event.

The funny thing is, or maybe not so funny, is that the current situation in the food industry is not so different then a lot of things that impact peoples lives every day that they do not think about. Ignorance is bliss. Those who choose ignorance have no excuse. Those who do not realize they are being manipulated into ignorance are the "proles."

U.S. citizens are lied to by the U.S. government and corporations. U.S. citizens are not told the whole truth by the U.S. government and corporations. U.S. citizens are not given the knowledge to choose how to live their own lives the best possible way they can which the U.S. government and the corporations have.

It is not in the interest of the U.S government or corporations to have well educated, knowledgeable citizens that are capable of making their own decisions and deciding which products to consume based on that product’s overall cost to humanity. Free thinking individuals do not promote the current government and corporate interests. What does is having a population that follows the government and corporate sponsored way of life, especially if it is followed without asking questions and demanding answers that would lead us out of such a "cave."

If I were to keep animals in the same conditions as many are kept in food production purely for my own enjoyment would those who use such terms as “animal rights nuts” be there to stand up for me? I would guess not, especially because animal cruelty for blood lust or a perverse pleasure is somehow different from the pleasure one gets from eating the dead flesh of tortured animals. So I assume the ends justify the means. If this is how you feel, that is fine, there is no ultimate authority on how we should live our lives as humans. However, if this is truly how you feel, then you should have no qualms with the removal of privacy, individualism and basic human rights for the benefit of safety and security.

How little people know about the food they eat goes to show how little people really know about the world around them. Food is something that makes up a huge part of peoples lives and to dismiss so quickly the little we know about it is foolish. How misguided are we about the stuff that is not as close to us as food? It seems we take a lot for granted. It is amazing the things you learn when you ask questions and do your own research.

Finally, my hope, after writing (in the comment section) more than the “journalist” wrote in the article, is that 1) this gets posted and 2) that at least one person begins to question the world around them and search for the answers rather than just believing what they are told to.
