If Arizona Legalized All Latino Immigrants (Fat Chance), State Would Collect $1.6 Billion More in Taxes, Says UCLA Report

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer: generally wrong about things
We know wackjob Arizona officials aren't really too into facts anymore, in their SB 1970 crusade to hunt down every last undocumented Latino and throw 'em all back to the drug lords down south, but UCLA professor Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda just dropped some pretty useful numbers for those of us who make a hobby of ripping Arizona a new one. (And our own set of suburban bigots over here in Southern California aren't much better -- though naturally a bit chiller.)

The report reminds us of 2004's "A Day Without a Mexican," but comes at a much nastier moment for both the economy and immigration law in America [full PDF here].

First off, Hinojosa-Ojeda finds that a mass deportation of workers sin papeles would shrink the Arizona economy by $48.8 billion...

... and reduce sales-tax revenues by 10.1 percent. Ouch. At the same time, total employment would drop 17 percent -- meaning 581,000 jobs would be eliminated. (Yes, that figure includes undocumented workers. But unless you're an us versus them hate monger, lost jobs are of concern to any international citizen.)

On the other hand, if all Latinos who wanted to work in Arizona were legally allowed to do so, the report shows that employment would jump 7.7 percent, labor income would swell $5.6 billion and income-tax revenues would increase by $1.68 billion.

From the Center for American Progress:

The analysis demonstrates unequivocally that undocumented immigrants don't simply "fill" jobs; they create jobs. Through the work they perform, the money they spend, and the taxes they pay, undocumented immigrants sustain the jobs of many other workers in the U.S. economy, immigrants and native-born alike. Were undocumented immigrants to suddenly vanish, the jobs of many Americans would vanish as well. In contrast, were undocumented immigrants to acquire legal status, their wages and productivity would increase, they would spend more in our economy and pay more in taxes, and new jobs would be created.

Simply put, Arizona's current approach to immigration policy is economically self-destructive.

Professor Hinojosa-Ojeda is down in El Salvador right now helping President Obama find viable ways to keep Latinos in their home countries -- aka, help foster jobs and economy there, so immigrants won't be forced into making a death-defying desert trip into the U.S. -- because that's just how he do. But he did tell us the following over the phone:

"If Arizona actually got what they wanted, we would have a $100 billion collapse, because [immigrants] produce so much wealth."

The professor says he'll be releasing a similar study on Los Angeles in about two weeks. Can't wait. Of course, there are those Angelenos who will always look at undocumented workers as leeches, re: "Illegal Immigrants' 'Anchor Babies' Took $53 Million In Welfare Services In L.A. County In 2010." But how much of that would be made up if their parents were allowed to pay taxes?

since when do they pay taxes and we have lost over all with these people Billions by their medical bills, our crime rate, and the prison costs, let alone the court costs for translaters and public defenders! Get rid of them, then re-structure our immigration laws and shore up our entries, because we are sitting ducks for more terrorism. Why are we such sissys? Kick their butts home. Look at the recent studies in comparison to what Schwartzenager said about 80 percent of the Cash Jobs in California are taken by illegal aliens? So where are those taxes? Come on! What a bunch of Liars, and I wouldn't trust anyone from Chitown to tell you the truth! they are Big Labor and have a plan for all those illegals, when they re-structure they will enroll all those people in jobs and give them slave labor pay and start over, with their bully tactics. Arizonia is not a rich state and they have not the population to support these illegals either! Leave them alone! Why dont they go home and fix their own countries! If anything it would behoove us to support their returns to Mexico, and help them establish their own! We provide help to Africa? Why not Mexico? We are the biggest tourisim there so it would be nice to make them a good neighbor. But make them go home! Along with all the Islams! Why is it that they own most of the Gas stations? and our gas rates are sky high? And why don't the Mexicans have a few convienent stores? Americans are left our of the pic, we have no more mom and pop stores, and that is what Obama wants! He said "Americans are Arrogant". Sounds funny from someone doesnt it? Americans? So what are you Mr President? He hasn't a leg to stand on but his mouth is what he stands on! Obama needs to go! We are at war with the Islams so why are we giving them the Farm. And yet we pick on the Mexicans? you don't think the rest of the world doesnt see through this? Of Course they do, and that is why we are now lower then whale poop to them. How can you trust a country that supports the enemy in the President position, what about Rahm Emanuel in the power position in Chitown? That was a Chess game! and we are in Check, next stop Check Mate.

In Arizona, illegal aliens steal more in welfare benefits through anchor babies than they contribute. Our economy is collapsing because they are a DRAIN on Arizona. They contribute NADA.

Why stop at $1.6 billion?? How about $50 billion? How about $500 billion? How much are we in debt, how about $999999999 trillion?? Here's how to do it with your logic:

Have the whole population of Africa, Asia, Middle East come here tomorrow (this is my business idea), illegally that is. And have the gov collect tax on all of them eventually.

You do this for any group of illegals, you must do it for the whole world, and they all can cite your excuses back at you. "Legalize me, and you can collect $999999999 trillion tax dollars", "I have a Dream", etc etc. you really want me to list all of them?

even with the extra tax revenue you still pay more out in social benefits (such as food stamps) than you take in.

And that is the mentality that will keep you exactly where you are my brother!!

How exactly can ARIZONA make Illegal Immigrants from MEXICO legal AMERICAN citizens? It can't. Only our FEDERAL government can do that. In my life I've done a lot of those jobs that 'Americans won't do' from unloading tractor trailers to manual labor in the construction industry. I couldn't do them now... the wages haven't really changed since the 80s... but the workforce has.

I believe that some of these studies are stuck in the mud. Illegals get paid under the table. Ask a woman who is in charge of finances in a low income home. By the time you pay for the necessities there isn't much left over. You shop in second hand stores, you go to food banks, you watch your sales. But we they stand up straight and tall knowing they are managing and not stealing resources that are needed to keep our country solvent and paying taxes. I did this for a few years, canned excess fruits and veggies and have to admit two years of venison was a bit much. :-) Not all illegals are field hands, they make darn good money, not as much if they were unionized but enough to support a family here in the states and another family in another country. They are office workers, carpenters, plumbers. electrians.

Don't let people scare you, we have the right to demand that our country and our people be protected. Obama isn't doing it so somebody has to.

The study is flawed. The reason illegal immigrants exist is due to the demand for cheap labor. Making them legal will only give a price advantage to a new wave of illegal immigrants, making the problem worse. If you want to fight illegal immigration, a good place to start is by eliminating the minimum wage and lowering taxes and regulations on small businesses.

David, I work for a small busniness that recently got rid of all their illegal immigrants, most of which I had no idea were illegal, these owners I work for are extremely wealthy and do not need lower taxes and regulations, they need only to lower their greed as owners. Taxes and regulations do not cripple small businesses, they just limit their profit and a lot of these owners are just too greedy.

Hmmm. If all the illegal immigrants were made legal overnight, I predict a possible mass layoff. Suddenly the newly-legal employees are entitlted to a minimum wage, which would negate the reason for their employment in the first place. Rather than a large increase in tax revenues, a more likely scenario would be a large increase in off-the-books workers.

Rob

And what about their entitlement costs? That kinda has to be factored against production before you can claim a net-positive effect... Forgot about that part, did ya?

If you get a 10K raise and spend 15K more than before, you're actually 5K in the hole. Same concept....

Not to mention that if you don't care enough to go through proper protocol to become a legal citizen, then you probably don't care enough to speak English...therefore will probably be limited to low paying positions with little to no benefits. As a result, I'm sure any "additional taxes" collected would be more than nullified after all the additional Medicaid payouts are said and done. This is just another Liberal fantasy-land headline. And, of course, if you want to approach this issue sensibly and in a way that doesn't create more of a liability for the already overburdened American taxpayer, then you are racist...

Problem with Arizona is people like that fat, redneck, hillbilly Sheriff Joe Arpaio!

When in doubt and when you have no legitimate argument, liberals always resort to name calling. We LOVE Sheriff Joe! Guess you hate all people who enforce the laws already on the books.

...and the name they always use is "racist". Very convenient label for those who are ignorant. It is always followed by using the holocaust, and Marianne did just that.

I'm with you about the good Sheriff - and I wish there were more Sheriff Joes to go around.

which proves, without hesitation, that the whole debacle in az is merely racism rearing it's ugly head again. classifying people as 'others' , to justify one's own self loathing. It was done to the jews, blamed as a class of people for a faltering economy... handy scapegoats., and i will never set foot in arizona again. used to be a nice state. not anymore. arizona is quickly becoming pre civil rights mississippi.

Colleen Caldwell
Colleen Caldwell

marianne, don't we have to start some place before we can make it better? Don't you think the Arizona people need a little relief in the cost of supporting illegals, the stopping of American citizens being killed close to the border.. Some of the farms and ranchs are being forced to shut down. We don't need drug cartels fighting in the middle of the cities.

Jocelyn
Jocelyn

The cartel is one thing but you have to think about all the people that came here to work and give their children a place to live where they don't have to worry about their kids not coming home. If you ever ask a hard working person that is from mx why they are here they will tell you exactly what I did. And any person who does not have a ssn cannot get help with food stampt or ma or any of that. If they have a child here the child can get help but they can't. It makes me mad cuz people say Mexicans are lazy bla bla bla but you know what my husband works 365 days a yr and he doesn't get a raise or a day off or medical insurance or vacation time nothing.
