Prop. 19 Organizers Push For 2012 Marijuana Legalization Initiative in California: Pot Shop Owner Richard Lee Sidelined

Another legalization effort likely in 2012.
Full legalization for marijuana in California was voted down in November. But it was close enough to give pot backers hope for another try.

And that try is officially coming in 2012, at least by all appearances. The Coalition for Cannabis Policy Reform 2012 formed a committee to explore a fresh run for legalization.

Members of the group were on-hand Saturday during a meeting about legalization in Hollywood, we're told.

While Coalition for Cannabis Policy Reform 2012 contains some of the same folks who were behind last year's failed attempt, Dale Gieringer, California NORML's state coordinator, says if a ballot measure will happen in 2012, it will be carried by CCPR.

"That coalition is very serious about doing an initiative," he tells the Weekly. "They're going to do some public opinion research. I'm aware of half dozen initiatives that have been proposed. I don't know of any that would have serious funding other than this one."

Gieringer notes that billionaire George Soros backed Prop. 19 and would likely get behind this effort.

However, cannabis entrepreneur Richard Lee, who spearheaded Prop. 19 almost as a one-man show -- an element of the campaign that might have hurt legalization efforts -- "has moved himself to the background on this," Gieringer says.

"There's more confidence that whatever emerges is more likely to be from the marijuana community than there was with Prop. 19," he said.

They need to lower the age to 18. if it the age stays 21 then its just going to cause problems.

There is no real argument against repealing this prohibition. Even the social stigma is mostly gone. Like the Social Security, everybody knows what the problems is and the approximate solution, but nobody will really act because we elect career politicians, not law-makers and executives. This petition shows that there is overwhelming support for change http://www.alldabees.com/quest...

The frequency of demonstrations is increasing (e.g. Overgrow the Government). Best wishes to those who demonstrate, that's where real progress comes from!

Thank you for posting news.

I am promoting a simple safe first step. The idea is if we cannot legalize for the people first we cannot pass a more complex decriminalization initiative,I post my best concept to date. I am a private citizen of California. I have no business affiliations.----------------- Concerning our prop-19 II effort and the obviously for-profit predefined debates I am attempting to counter early so we the people can work it out.

We have discord. That is word we are looking for.Definition of DISCORD1a : lack of agreement or harmony (as between persons, things, or ideas) b : active quarreling or conflict resulting from discord among persons or factions : strife

———————-

Just finding a way that “we all get a bong” isn’t the Answer.Once again the Initiative process will not include open debate and a consensus.

We just saw a private for profit debate in Hollywood with predefined “competing” concepts and still as of today we the people have no clue what is being decided on.

So yes we have discord because the Concert is a private affair where an “all or nothing” initiative is being drafted and we the people can take it or leave it.I for one will do my best to defeat any initiative that doesn’t establish clear horticulture rights for the average citizen.

Here is a repost of a post that was rejected by the folks running the site of “for profit” private debates with staged “competing concepts.”

[quote]Already people such as myself are pointing out that public debate has been limited to pay-for-view forums in Berkeley and Hollywood and that points the heavy handed finger at Cannabis Industry drafting another “All or Nothing” Initiative. An All or Nothing Initiative seeks to tie all the issues associated with cannabis into one package so that we birth a new child of liberty in that image. Remember Rosemary’s Baby?

What I, a lowly worker of this world, want most is freedom to practice proper horticulture. I want to have freedom to have heirloom varieties, to do seed saving and seed saving exchanges with people all over the state. I want to grow all the plants I can or feel like and also want to be able to exchange cannabis with other common folks such as myself. So is it time for some left-wing cannabis freedom for the common man?Perhaps that term “Left-Wing” has you wondering where your firearm is?Lets change that to another concept. A concept of American cooperation and team effort; Baseball. If the state of Cannabis legalization in California was a Baseball game then the score with the pro-cannabis team still at bat is two strikes for Prop-19s’, One Home Run for Prop 215 and we are trying to decide which hitter should bat next.Should it be another batter like Prop-19? Should it be a Batter like Prop-215; “a fantastic out of the park swinger who championed rights for the people of the State of California for cannabis use, horticulture rights and the ability to exchange cannabis with others.”The Question is who should bat next in our efforts to win the pennant of Cannabis Freedom.

I was thinking we should put the prop-215, heavy duty for the people, type hitter up again and BUNT to get our most treasured pro-voters on base.Time for the team to sacrifice to get the people of the State of California full Cannabis rights.

In my opinion an all or nothing approach doesn’t help us. It will either be a sweetheart deal for industry, if it passes, and the people will get some permission, as with requiring a land owner to say it’s okay for you to grow crops on his plantation, or something that limits actual horticulture by the people of the state of California.A Strike out at bat again and an all or nothing will keep us waiting another two years for the next season, and, keep current cannabis Millionaires making money while we the people may still to time in jail or prison for growing, breading, seed saving and sharing cannabis.

The “For-The-People” Hitter then is the Home run type and if we all stand up and promote solid rights to cannabis horticulture for individual human citizens we will have that runner on first and the game will go on for us all.If not then with three strikes.. We lose our turn at bat but the league that holds the commercial franchises will play another day and we all have to live with defeat for another season.

Remember who actually buys the hot dogs and pop corn… Remember who buys your cannabis at your shops.. Better that you sell above average safe, clean produce and we the people keep the genetics going with free and open breeding and seed saving than it is to control the hot dog market and ruin the enjoyment of the game.

Marijuana is the safest drug with actual benefits for the user as opposed to alcohol which is dangerous, causes addiction, birth defects, and affects literally every organ in the body. Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws. I drew up a very cool poster for the cause which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot... Drop in and let me know what you think!

Marijuana has repeatedly been proven to NOT cause cancer, heart disease, brain damage, liver disease, emphysema, or any other significant health issue, and its addiction potential is about on par with coffee. In all respects, marijuana is far safer than beer and wine and should, at the very least, be controlled by exactly the same laws that we use for alcohol.

Our current marijuana prohibition empowers drug dealers and the Mexican drug cartels by preventing any form of legal competition to their activities. Instead of protecting children from marijuana, these laws create an environment of zero legal supply amidst massive and unrelenting demand and effectively serve to make our children LESS safe. It is *because* of the failings of the prohibition that our children now have easier access to marijuana than to alcohol! Our communities need legal adult marijuana sales for exactly the same reason that they need legal alcohol and tobacco sales - to keep unscrupulous black-market criminals away from our neighborhoods and our children.

Parents work hard to keep drugs away from their children and they need effective, logic-based laws to help them with this. In order to greatly improve the safety of our children we need legal adult marijuana sales in gas stations and supermarkets at prices too low for drug dealers to match - just as beer and wine are sold today.

Bravo! Well said!  Couldn't agree more - You forgot to mention that some police officers use it as a pension.

you obviously are not educated my friend. Marijuana is non comparable to alcohol, and saying it's just as bad is just plain ignorant and retarded.

Prop 19 feel apart due to to much conflicting interests on the pro-marijuana side. There were too many people making money off medical marijuana and blackmarket who saw prop 19 as a direct threat to there market source. Let's face it if anyone over 21 can buy or grow the price would drop off and not every toker wants that.

I just hate having to fight both sides for legalization. People are being arrested, beaten, robbed, and killed, all for government profiteering and "gang territory".

So? What's your point? This ideal world you want to live in won't happen. You can't have legalization without taxation and regulation. So what if you see these people as sell outs. They get shit done. They are businessmen playing the game more adequately and responsibly than any other group.

It's negative and counterproductive people like you that are hurting our movement. Obviously if you don't like something and you feel like you can do better, do it! But if you can't than why make personal attacks and create problems out of something that needs to run like a well-oiled machine to win!?

Vote common sense 2012!
