Updated after the jump: Christopher Earl Glass was a star high-school basketball player, and may have been traumatized from his grandmother's death six months prior.

The Palmdale teen who allegedly abducted his 5-month-old baby and led sheriff's deputies on a three-minute chase around 3:30 p.m. today has been declared dead, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies followed 17-year old Christopher Earl Glass' SUV until it crashed at the Palmdale Metrolink Station. At that point, they saw him take out a weapon and stab the baby to death -- before running into a nearby house on the 500 block of East Avenue P-14.

One deputy decided to follow Glass into the building...

... and, after a confrontation that is still under investigation, fatally shot the teen just minutes after he murdered his own baby boy.

According to the original ABC7 report, the baby was declared dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

An Amber Alert had been issued around 2 p.m., when Glass left the baby's mother's house after an argument -- with their child in tow. From the department's own report, just now released:

Palmdale Sheriff's Station deputies responded to a report of a child abduction in Palmdale at about 11:00AM, Tuesday.

They were told that a 17-year suspect had kidnapped his 5-month old baby son from a person who was taking care of the baby, and drove away.

As deputies investigated the kidnapping, the suspect phoned the mother of the baby and threatened to harm him.

Then, after a few hours of manhunting, at about 3:30 p.m.:

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies who were searching for the suspect and baby saw the suspect driving in the area and began to follow him. The deputies saw the suspect motion in a manner that appeared as though he was stabbing the baby as he drove his car. Attempting to get him to stop, deputies went in pursuit of the suspect's vehicle. After about 2-3 minutes, the suspect was involved in a single-vehicle collision, striking a building.

The suspect got out of the car and ran, and deputies chased him on foot.

Other deputies ran to the suspect's car, picked up the baby, and raced him to the hospital in their radio car. Unfortunately, the baby was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Deputies chased the suspect and saw him attempting to break into the home of a family the suspect didn't know, and a Deputy-Involved Shooting occurred. The suspect was able to break into the home, with deputies chasing after him. A second Deputy-Involved Shooting occurred inside the home.

Update: Fox11 reported last night that Glass was a star on his Highland High School basketball team. Some shocked friends and family have been interviewed by various news stations, remembering stuff like "He was very excited. He was like any other dad, he was just happy to have a baby" and "He loved that baby. He would be holding the baby, feeding him, changing his diaper. I mean, he was a great dad. That's why it's a shock."

However, Glass' relatives have also indicated they noticed a change in the boy after he discovered his grandmother dead six months ago, and allegedly came away quite traumatized.

One witness to the Metrolink Station crash told reporters: "All I saw was this car come flying and it hit the column, so I ran. And this guy jumps out with a knife in his hand, so I ran away just in case so he doesn't get me."

The baby's name was Chris Jr., or CJ.

One LA Weekly commenter, Dsweetbabe1, says:

"This is very sad, I don't know why he did this. He was very nice and a quiet person who I never thought would do this. It's a shock to me and even though he did something like this he will be missed by those who knew him..."

Here's the KTLA video, including photos of Glass' 5-month-old:

It is tragic that the symptoms of distress and depression that this young man exhibited were ignored by his family and friends. Perhaps if he could of received sone therapy he may not have chosen this route. Unfortunately the baby was a innocent victim on a society that looks away. I read how he had a future and how obsessed he was with the girlfriend perhaps there is more to his obsession as a resoning for his action. The police did their job but his family failed him. Let it be a lesson to all watch your kids and their relationships.

We may never know the true reason. Doubt it was about the baby directly as child was only 5 months old. Humm, restraining orders? Sad to be 17 and in a situation where the family courts orders keep you away from your child and makes you pay for that pleasure. And we act so surprised when this happens ......

well the mother chose to have a baby with him.. ladies pick your partners better. My sympathy lies with the child and the first responders who had to watch the baby die!

i think the fact that he was not ready to hav the kid freaked him out. Day after day mi mom scares me of having a baby and how a woman could trap me. Me being a guy i know how it it to easaly drawn to beutafull women. Most african ameraican people are tramitised when it comes down to having it a kid. Wich means im say for us its NEVER ok to hav a kid and u can only hav one if there are hi wages earened. I my self am a very quiet person and let me tell u somthing wat happened in this article is the thing i fear most out of a relationship. What im trien to say is that i dont think he ever intended to kill the kid but i think that the fact that he was soo worried and soo streesssed about bills and epesialy if the wife slash girlfriend was ganna leave him he would ultimately blame the kid. Many people see a child as a great asset maby in foren countries but here an amarica for men its a burden and being horny is a curse.Divorce is somthing that what he probubly dreaded on the most in this case maby a break up, That boy was scared of his feuture and his girl i dont think was there for him. the fact that he RAN tells me so and also that he HID. Shooting a man over this was wrong he was not a normal criminal ( this was his only crime)...... he was not an insane man........... he was a young boy that had needed more support and confadence. He should hav been tazed and the cops should hav actualy tried to help him ( not throw him in jail forver .....). But now 2 are dead instiad of one.I fear for our young generation cus having kinds in a city invirment is seen to them is a bad thing. Somthing tells me u guys are ganna see alot more of this. We need more fathers.... divorce is not an option.....

Good to know that you are avoiding becoming a teen father. Please, though, do yourself a favor and learn proper spelling and grammar. With 80+ mistakes in one paragraph, your writing screams "uneducated". You'd have a hard time getting most any real job. You're thoughts are good, just learn how to get them on paper better.

You are an idiot, you know nothing about the mother, so don't assume she wasn't there for anything, and even if he was a loser crackhead, to kill the baby is just sick he was the father. thatw as his child and he was supposed to protect it not kill it, I thank god the cops killed this piece of human trash

Richard Sparks you have to be a compelete and utter fool for thinking somebody can just wake up in the morning and do something like this. This boy had to be suffering prior to this. The childs mother maybe hurt by this but she played a major part in this whole situation. She is not completely innocent. The child support offices are filled everyday with thousands of good men who take care care of their children, and some bad man also but women pray on young men with a future. Women are trained in society to get the man with a future so he can take care of you. I have even heard some women suggest to their daughters to get pregnant to keep a man. This was tragedy but the real tragedy is when this hot topic is over and no one even googles his name, the same situations are going to keep happening to young men. Regardless of race or religion men are often unrecognized as victims because they are taught to "be a man" and "dont cry", "dont show your feelings", and to "keep it all inside". Im sure you have gotten women pregnant and they have been forced by you to have abortions. What makes those women any different than this young man? A death is a death.

You are an idiot HE WAS ALSO A CHILD no excuse for his actions but dont you DARE THANK GOD for this you are the human trash and you r not without sin so i hope God is forgiving when you are put in a similar situation and im sure you will b/c you think that you can judge someone else BE CAREFUL the lord heard what you said .

I am glad that some young people like you understand the importance of being responsible and not having kids until they are really ready to be good parents. I grew up in a different time when being a teenage parent wasn't accepted as much as it is today, but even though I tried to be careful I ended up getting a girl pregnant when I was 17, too. I can never imagine doing something like this, but my biggest mistake was that I didn't man-up and take responsibility and try to be a dad. I never got to be part of that baby's life and I never got to know him. I was too busy trying to be a bad-ass gangsta and didn't grow up and realize my mistake until it was too late. Then I found out years later that he got killed when he was 17, probably doing the same stupid sh*t that I was doing when I was that age, and I'll never forgive myself for not being there and trying to give him some guidance so that he could have grown up to be a responsible adult. So you see, it doesn't even have to be this tragic, and it can still be a tragedy years later and you might not even know it when it happens. The only thing I have to disagree with you about is that he had to have been mentally ill to do something like this, a sane person can not just kill a baby out of frustration. So for anyone who has already made the mistake of becoming a parent too early in life, get help if you're having trouble handling it. No matter what is going on between the parents, the child should never suffer for it, even to the point of having to witness the parents fighting, let alone dying for it.

@ VIN SORRY FOR UR LOST, BUT IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM NOT WANTING HIS CHILD OR BEING TO YOUNG FOR THE RESPONSIBILITIES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT BUT HE WAS CRYING OUT FOR HELP IT JUST WASNT SEEN OR HEARD IN TIME, HE LOVED CJ AND HE WAS PROUD TO BE A FATHER EVEN AS YOUNG AS HE WAS BUT FOR WHATEVER REASON HE DECIDED TO DO THIS WAS A BAD DECISION IT SHOULD NEVER COME TO SOMETHING LIKE THIS YOU CANT MAKE SOMEONE DO SOMETHING THAT THEY DONT WANT TO DO. YES HE NEEDED HELP AND YES BY HIM BEING AS YOUNG AS HE WAS HE NEEDED THAT FAMILY SUPPORT AND PROFESSIONAL HELP THAT HE DIDNT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY AND WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE BOTH FAMILIES ARE IN NEED OF SUPPORT YOU KNOW. R.I.P Cj YOU WILL BE FOREVER AND EVER IN OUR HEARTS WE LOVE AND MISS YOU 8-( AND CG YOU WILL BE MISSED BY SO VERY MANY.

Why is the ? Emotional Distress! The teen in ? was my cousin . To stab some one is a crime of passion . What was he going through that led up to his death and his precious baby . I have a son his age . My cousin (his mother ) has lost her youngest son and grandson. While still grieving the death of her mom and dad. Chris was very close to his grandma and he was the one that found her body. The girlfriend n ? was in a new relationship (baby was 5 months old) @ 17 how much can you handle and would you even know how. Chris also lost his dad @ a very young age So just PRAY.

Many people experience death, rape, abuse, and other trauma as a child and/or adult. AND many of these people OVERCOME and DO NOT murder him/herself or another living being, let alone a DEFENSELESS, INNOCENT, INFANT.... This boy (your cousin) may have lost a grandmother...I'm sorry, but does this set him apart from the millions of others whose grandparents, parents, sisters, brothers, husbands or wives, etc... passed away? Does this EXCUSE his actions...does this justify HIS DECISION to take the life of a beautiful baby boy? NO!!!

It is DISGUSTING to read your statement which DISREGARDS the MURDER of a 5 month old baby (also Your Cousin).

*****It is a sad story altogether. You mentioned: "at 17 how much can you handle..." Knowing what he was going through, perhaps his family should have seen the signs and reached out...too late now.*****

Rest in peace, young infant...
