16-year-old Alice Zhang
Updated after the jump with a tremendous show of love and respect for the teen, and a fundraiser for her family, while police continue to investigate the accident.

Alice Zhang, one of two 16-year-old girls hit by a car while making their way across West Duarte Road on Sunday at 6:45 p.m., was declared dead in a hospital soon after.

The other girl is still being treated for "serious injuries" at Huntington Memorial Hospital, according to an Arcadia Police Department press release.

The department's watch commander says the 20-year-old male driver who hit the teens while travelling west on Duarte was not arrested for the accident.

"It's just one of the unfortunate circumstances of time of day, and position of the sun," he says, adding that the light was shining brightly in the driver's eyes.

Add that to the "heavy pedestrian traffic in the area" -- a strip mall on the north side of the street, and a medical center to the south -- and the situation turned deadly. (Another Arcadia man was just killed in December outside the shopping center, though that incident was a hit-and-run.)

According to her Facebook page, Zhang attended Arcadia High School, located just a few blocks from the mall -- and the spot where she and her friend were hit. Zhang appears to have been a long-distance runner on the Arcadia High track team, as well as a member of the school's physics team.

Did you know Alice? Share below.

Update: Arcadia High School students took to the comment boards in droves yesterday, telling of Alice Zhang's quiet strength of character and many academic/extracurricular achievements. From Weekly commenters who seem to have known her best:

Guest says, "Alice Zhang was a close friend of mine. Her calm and shy demeanor belies the extremely hardworking and ambitious person she really is. Although at times under-appreciated or simply passed-by because she was so quiet, she was an incredibly resilient, intelligent, and compassionate girl who undoubtedly had great potential for the future. She took multiple Advanced Placement courses, is a member of long distance Track, Physics Team, Leo Club, etc. Life is fleeting. We students at Arcadia High wish her family the best."
Karu says, "Alice was one of my best friends. I loved her--we all did--us, people that were lucky enough to cross paths with her, that is. She was incredibly warm, passionate, clever, and above all, compassionate... She always tried so hard, but she never told anyone, because she didn't want anyone to worry--that's what I, and so many people loved about her. She is a person to be admired. There's an enormous outpouring of support for her, and it warms me to see that--it only goes to show that Alice will continue to live on through the influence she had on every one of us. We love and will miss you, Alice."

Many others say that though they didn't know Zhang well, the brief interactions they had with her left a strong impression.

A Facebook event called "RIP Dear Alice Zhang, Please Show Some Support!" has amassed close to 3,000 "attendees" since its creation yesterday. The description reads:

"Please drop off your cards or donations during Period 2, Lunch or afterschool at A-213. Look for Alwyna Lau, and if you can't find her, Mr. Lee."

According to the Pasadena Star-News, the 20-year-old man who hit Zhang and her friend was driving a 1997 Lexus Sedan. One Weekly commenter wrote yesterday that "today I passed by the site where Alice was struck, and I saw policemen there." Indeed, Arcadia police tell us the investigation is ongoing. We'll update with additional details as they're available.

She was in my C++ class as a freshman, very sweet quiet girl. She helped me write code and was all around a great person. Although I don't know her personally, her death has impacted me and all of us as a remainder that life is short. I hope her family are doing better now and I pray these types of accidents don't happen again.

Vehicle Accidents have become a frequent occurrence and bike riders are now considered one of the most vulnerable road users. If you have sustained any type of personal injury due to a road accident and it was not your fault then you may entileted to claim against the culprit to receive compensation for all the damages..... motorbike injury compensation

I live in Arcadia and often walk/drive/bike this section of road. It totally agree with the comment about "Bermuda Block" and others who've mentioned how bad the driving is on this bit of Duarte. I have used that crosswalk, but with extreme caution and reluctance--it is very dangerous, flashing lights or no, and at any time of day, not just sunset. Often, cars on the near-lane stop for pedestrians, but cars in the other lane are still speeding with no intention of stopping. It's easy to forget and start to cross. Drivers also get very impatient while waiting, and sadly, many of the pedestrains are ill or aged people (all the medical centers on the south side of the road) who need time to cross. This crosswalk needs a red light!

I totally agree with Thom74. This crosswalk needs a red light or a stop sign.

I HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY THIS TRAGIC ACCIDENT AND WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST THE STARTING OF A PETITION REQUESTING THE CITY OF ARCADIA TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO MAKE USE OF THE CROSSWALK SAFE. THE CROSS WALK NEEDS A VERY CLEAR SIGN AND CROSSING SIGNAL LIGHT FOR WHENEVER A PERSON SEEKS TO CROSS AT THE CROSSWALK. I ASK THAT ALICE'S FAMILY AND FRIENDS COME TOGETHER TO TURN AN UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT INTO AN ACTION HONORING ALICE ZHANG'S LIFE. I THINK ALICE WOULD WANT SUCH ACTION TO BE TAKEN TO PROTECT THE CURRENT AND FUTURE RESIDENTS OF ARCADIA.

I have heard that the driver was with his girlfriend at the time, and that the car was wrecked up afterwards. That shows that he was distracted AND speeding at the same time. If a car is wrecked up by crashing into people and managing to kill a healthy and athletic girl, there is no way that driver was NOT speeding. Other comments have stated that they have done observations as to whether the sun obstructs one's vision at that time. Their observations were completely contrary to this silly driver's statement. His excuse sounds like a child's excuse made up to keep himself out of trouble temporarily. The police should have already investigated this. If the community has already investigated this, there is no reason why the police is behind on this incident. My friend also noted that when he saw Alice on the ground, she was quite a distance from the crosswalk itself. The crash would have had to had an extremely large impact, and that impact would most likely occur if the driver was speeding. The police did not arrest him because they thought he would not escape. However, I believe they should have arrested him while they investigated the situation. On a different note, you will be greatly missed Alice. My sister was being helped by you in math, and she cried the entire night for you. Although I didn't know you, I cried when I read the articles about you, and grew extremely upset as to why this happened. I believe that you and your friend should not have died or been injured, and that both of you deserve better. Hopefully, heaven is a wonderful place for you. Rest In Peace, Alice Zhang.

What a tragic shame this sweet little girl is killed and the driver goes free. Where's the justice? Someone else kills a dog and goes straight to jail. The arcadia police department needs to get on the ball and arrest this irresponsible young man. If he was distracted by his girl friend and contributed to this accident she should be charged with manslaughter.Come on apache's. SPEAK UP, OUR SLOGAN SAYS NO APACHE'S DOWN. Let's give alice and her parents our prayer's and support. Apache father.

Alice was a good team and club member for me. She was the treasurer of JPR, a long distance runner, and a good student. She was always friendly, and whenever I walk into club every week, I'll always look for Alice. She died too soon and I'll miss her deeply.

I don't know Alice but for some reason this makes me very sad. I go to a different high school and maybe its because I live rather close by to that school. But I heard about this on a local newspaper and seeing this girl was like seeing people I know who I see everyday walking down the street. It really made me think deeper. What if I really knew this girl? It would make me even more sadder, but still its quite sad to hear this. She seems like a really nice girl, the type of girl who would be alot of fun. I didn't know what she did to deserve this. God bless her and may she rest in peace.

She did not deserve this at all. She was such a nice, sweet, and wonderful girl.

What a horrible accident -- this is such a loss, not just to Alice's family and friends but to the community. She sounded like such an outstanding young lady and dying in a pedestrian accident and while in a crosswalk no less is just tragic. Like many, I also think that the driver who hit her (and claimed that the sun was in his eyes as a defense) should have been charged. He must have been driving too fast, in an area near a crosswalk, to have killed her in a collision. The greater the speed, the greater the impact of the crash.

I was on my way home from a tennis tournament when my mom decided that we should grab some food at the market for dinner that night. when we were getting in our car ready to head out, we saw a crowd and a body outside the parking lot and my heart broke. we finally got out of the crowded mall parking lot and could not look back to the body on the street l, where now the police and paramedics had arrived. we rode home I silence and I could not stop wondering what happened to the unfortunate girl lyin on the street. now that I read these articles...my heart breaks all over again. my prayers are with the family of alice and her classmates. rip Alice, I hope you are in a better place now <3

My heart is broken for this young girl and her family and friends. Affects me deeply because though I didn't know her she and her friends are my daughter's age hanging out at same places she and her friends do, and it could have been any of them that this happened to. There is a yummy frozen yogurt place inside the strip mall where I have taken Inger and her friends and I have always said that location and that parking lot made me really nervous and was an accident waiting to happen. It is a too small lot in a center crammed with way too many people and three times too many cars filling ever spot and circling around aggressively inside like sharks waiting for a spot to open up and then gunning it back out onto Duarte Road when they can't find a spot. I am hoping this wont' be what turns out to have actually happened in this case (that the driver had gotten frustrated and sped out onto Duarte Road and hit the girls).

I saw this accident and was the person that called 911. I felt terrible because there was nothing I could do for her other than wait for the medics to arrive. She sounds like she was a really sweet girl, now one who will never see the wonderful future in store for humanity.

Terry

My friend knew her. She was an amazing girl, and didn't deserve this at all. She was smart, kind, thoughtful, and good at almost anything she put her mind to (which was a lot of things.) Above all, she was an extremely diligent, had worker; and my friend loved her so much. She was a wonderful, wonderful person, and it's so hard to comprehend how something like this could happen. She isn't just another news story; she was a living, breathing, human being that was loved by countless people. I only hope that you guys keep in mind to be careful the next time you cross the street.

Jerd44
Jerd44

I worked today with investigators as I tried crossing the crosswalk 5 times Between 6:00-6:45 (time around alices death) to see if the sun was a factor in this terrible incident.. turns out that they could see me crossing and the lights flashing on the crosswalk everytime.

Nothingt21
Nothingt21

I don't want to sound calloused or to detract from the severity of the situation but here is the way I see it.

I think it is wrong to crucify the driver based on what was presented in this very short article (heck, it wasn't even that, just a short statement on what happened). And yes, sometimes sun can be a big factor. You guys drive right? Anybody ever actually lived and commuted past this area? This place is an accident waiting to happen, I am surprised that this crosswalk in the middle of a busy street is still in place and even more surprised that people choose to cross here.

Nevertheless, it is unfortunate that this happened. We should do something to close this place down and reduce the speed limit before this happens yet again.

I agree with S K. The area where Alice was killed is a very risky stretch of street. It's very scary when I see drivers looking for a parking space in an obviously crowded parking lot, or drivers consistently not stopping to exit the parking lot, and/or driving above the limit or even under the limit when there's heavy traffic, or drivers with attitude. I didn't know Alice, but her death breaks my heart terribly. I am praying for her and the other teen that was hurt, and the 20-year old driver, and all of their families. I have three teenagers, 17-year old twins and a 19-year old. It's easy to blame the 20-year old, when you hurt, but really the sun can blind you even when you are wearing the best of sunglasses. I don't know the facts nor do most of the posters in this blog, so please leave the investigation to the authorities. Don't pass judgment. We've all made close calls intentionally or unintentionally. May you rest in peace, Alice. Rest in peace.

Again, if you cannot see, DO NOT DRIVE!!! How fast he had driven to kill a young athletic person? If he had at least driving slowly, Alice would not have been killed!

We call this area The Bermuda Block. Much like how air and sea vehicles in the Bermuda Triangle disappear, common sense vanishes on this stretch of Duarte.

Every time my husband and I drive down that part of the street, which is often as we live just down the road, we remind ourselves to be extra vigilant because it really is, as you say, an accident waiting to happen. It seems to us like there's an oddly disproportionate number of careless drivers in that area. We actively watch them now because of the repeated citing of really risky behaviors and have observed that a stunning number are distracted to the point of extreme danger. I'd like to blame cell phone usage or something obvious, which IS occasionally the case, but it seems to be most often a case of trying to find a location while driving.

I can vouch for the fact that the sun CAN occasionally be an instant disabler to vision. And if your windshield is even the least bit dirty, you can be completely blinded to what's in front of your car. It happened to me on a curvy part of a freeway in San Francisco in the late afternoon. Yeah, speeding down a busy freeway. I had to lean out the window immediately and slow down until I could pull over and wait for the sun to clear the horizon. It was a miracle that I didn't hit anything/body. But, for the record, you are entirely responsible for keeping your windshield in perfect functioning condition, so no using a dirty windshield as an excuse for anything.

Let this be a reminder; if your vision is in ANY way obstructed or you otherwise can't drive safely, DO NOT DRIVE. Pull over if you have to, but do NOT proceed. You could be the next driver to kill someone unintentionally, and their life won't be the only one lost or ruined forever.

It absolutely breaks my heart to hear news of such a young girl pass. From what I am reading, Alice had a great personality and she will always remembered. Although the driver had murdered a life, it must have been some accident, right? I somehow believe that he must be heartbroken by his mistake and there is no way in hell he would ever have wanted to take Alice's life away. I don't want to hate on him, because he mustn't have meant it, but my feelings are that he should definitely have some sort of punishment, and also do the most he can to support Alice's family... I hope he will do what's right for her family, learn to be a safer driver, and I must say, overcome at least a bit of this unfortunate experience... Best wishes to Alice's family and also the other female who was hit. To Alice's friends and family, stay strong...

Before I was blessed with her friendship, Alice was just a classmate to me; she seemed nice, was very artistic, and had a pretty smile. Luckily, over one summer we were placed next to each other on a seating chart in class--and our friendship started. I never appreciated her enough; I can never appreciate her enough. Someone as unassuming and lovely as Alice only comes around once in a lifetime.Alice taught me to put cheesecake bits on my frozen yogurt at Yogurtland. She taught me to worry less about boys and just enjoy life. Most importantly, she taught me to appreciate every person I was lucky enough to meet. Let's all live our lives beautifully--knowing that we are so fortunate to still be here, while those as wonderful as Alice are not.

how could they not have arrested the driver or charged him with anything? The sun was in his eyes? Ignorance is not bliss! At least suspend his license or something. As a driver you need to constantly be vigilant and scanning the roads for anything. He killed one person and injured a second; that's just not right that they let him go so he can continue driving around wrecklessly.

Today I passed by the site where Alice was struck, and I saw policemen there. The idea of the "position of the sun" is under investigation. After this investigation, I believe that the driver will be put under trial which will determine if he's guilty of manslaughter or not.

I don't know Alice Zhang; I go to Temple City High School and have no bias towards her. But I hope the person who hit her has some sort of punishment, even though no amount of money or incarceration can compensate for Alice's tragic death. However, the murder of one beautiful young girl, as well as injuring another should not just simply be let go. To crash into someone with an impact strong enough to kill someone and say that this man is blameless is questionable. How can anyone blame the sun? That shouldn't even qualify for as a reason. Wear sunglasses, then. Be responsible. Whatever the circumstances are, in the end, this person did hit Alice's car, and did take the life of someone. He needs to take responsibility for his actions. This isn't about getting revenge at all; it is about owning up to mistakes and hoping that one day her family will be able to forgive him for the immense destruction he has caused. In fact, I don't know if he can ever forgive himself.

The Sun was at a angle which the shadow will cover the western Duarte @ 6:45pm, so that guy is LYING, HE SHOULD NOT BE LET GO FOR HIS MURDER

Lijia1

I totally agree with your view. I will never accept the sun is to blame. How strong the sun could be on Sunday afternoon at 6:45 pm? During that time on Sunday, the traffic westbound on Duarte couldn't be that heavy at all. I know because I drive on Duarte around that area for 12 years. To be able to hit someone young and with very good athletic ability and yet the impact of the crash was strong enough to kill that someone, I bet my life the driver wasn't driving less than 40 mph. The position of the incident was so close to the intersection of Baldwin and Durate. The traffic lights at that intersection is very visible when driving westbound. If that section was that busy like what other people are saying especially at 6:45 pm on Sunday, no way the driver could approach that intersection with high speed. And if not, how could the impact be that strong and fast enough to hit to people. I know I am speaking without any concrete evidence and measurement, but 25+ years of experience in drivng in private and military sectors and common sense tell me he was driving fast. We know how teenagers drive nowadays. In addition, the way the police handled the incident at the scene is very questionable. This is a fatal traffic incident. How could the police simply accepted the sun was the cause and let the drivier go? They never let me go when I get caught driving 38 mph in around those areas.

Jerd44
Jerd44

You are totally correct sir. Yesterday around the same time I was at the crosswalk looking at the memorial when suddenly a van with two women in it telling me they were working as investigators for Alice's parents. They told me they were gonna test if any of the factors of the crash were acually true so they asked me to push the button for the cross walk to simulate someone crossing the street. They looked pretty satsfied with the results. Also in my opinon there this no way that it was just the sun's fault other factors had to be put in such as a rumor I heard that the driver was going 60 mph in that area

Honestly, it's kind of scary... I don't want to make it sound like I'm being all rambly on 'oh woe is me my friend died,' so I'll just say this: She was (agh past tense ;3;), and always will be, one of the sweetest people I have ever met-- ever since bonding over Chinese school, in 3rd grade. I have never had the opportunity to meet her parents, so I can only hope for the best for them, her family, friends, and others. What happened is truly regrettable, as she has such promise...
