Beverly Hills Subway Line Could End Up Under Famous '90210' High School

Different routes through Beverly Hills.
They've made no secret of it: The folks in tony Beverly Hills don't want a subway under their precious high school (which inspired TV's 90210 and many a polo-shirted stereotype).

Well, it looks like Metro, the folks who are building the "Subway to the Sea" down Wilshire Boulevard, are leaning toward digging a huge tunnel under the campus near Century City anyway, at least if one its environmental impact reports is to be trusted.

The Beverly Hills Courier reports that it got a hold of the document, and that it indicates ...

... "the BHHS tunnel would be choice."

The Courier states the report ...

... appears designed to build a factual case for the shart turn south from Wilshire Boulevard under BHHS to reach the Constellation station ... The report then contains information about the ease of tunneling through oil fields (BHHS has an oil field underneath), lack of noice and vibration and "Why Operate Under Private Property."

One other route west -- the line will head from Koreatown to Westwood and eventually Santa Monica, mostly down Wilshire Boulevard -- has been under consideration. (See a PDF map of the routes here).

Residents prefer a slightly northern route that wouldn't tunnel under the school (and a few homes) but would place a station at the north end of Century City, where studies indicate there would be fewer riders.

In another piece, the Courier reports that the local school district has hired Washington, D.C. firm Venable, headed by former U.S. Transportation Secretary James Burnley, to lobby against the under-campus route.

Still waiting to see the update with Metro's response totally debunking the Courier's article.

Tick tock.

Once again disgraceful and irresponsible 'journalism' at the LA Weekly, scaremongering and willfully misrepresenting the facts.

Oh my god, the horror. A subway tunnel 70' under a school, just like the red and purple line subway tunnels already under schools homes, and businesses throughout Hollywood, Koreatown, Westlake, and Downtown. I truly feel for the city of Beverly Hills.

The 'shart' turn south? Sounds messy.

As a resident of Westwood I look at things in a different light - my take on the information is the opposite - I think that Metro is doing their utmost to pacify Beverly Hills - give BH 3 subway stops - don't tunnel under any BH homes or the high school - they are above that, just put all the tunnels under Westwood - keep moving the subway location to please Beverly Hills at the expense of the future Century City riders and all Los Angeles area residents.

The Beverly Hills School District should take a lesson from the people in Cheviot Hills. The transportation needs of the entire county are bigger than your overblown, unfounded fears. Don't waste millions of taxpayer dollars pursuing a lawsuit that you will surely lose.
