Water Your Lawn, People: SoCal's Main Water Supplier Says Restrictions Are Off, Drought is Over

Water is plentiful in California again.
Update: Beverly Hills has lifted its fines for excessive water consumption but has decided to keep its mandatory-watering-days schedule, according to the Beverly Hills Courier.

Remember those two- and three-times-a-week lawn watering restrictions you ignored in places like Beverly Hills, Glendale and Burbank?

Over. Probably.

A couple weeks after Gov. Jerry Brown officially declared California's years-long drought over (thanks, Madre Nature), the Godfather of SoCal water, the Metropolitan Water District, announced ...

... it will "end its call for mandatory water restrictions" for its customers -- basically the municipal water utilities of Southern California.

Those utilities still have to pass on the news, but they probably will.

Metropolitan board Chairman John V. Foley:

We join our member agencies and retailers throughout the region in thanking consumers for their water-saving efforts. Continued wise water practices will be necessary in order to maintain our reserves. This is a welcome respite from more acute shortage conditions we have faced in recent years.

Does this mean you should go ahead and start that Raging Waters park you always wanted to have in your backyard?

Nyet.

(In fact, in such a dry climate, with historic demands on the Colorado River, we question the wisdom of letting our guard down on this).

"Conserving water and maintaining wise water use remains as essential as ever," states Metropolitan G.M. Jeffrey Kightlinger.

They should not encourage people to return to their old water-wasting ways. I'm sure no one's lawn has died from underwatering!
