Marcy Winograd
A former campaign manager for Marcy Winograd has endorsed Debra Bowen in the race for the 36th Congressional District.

"She's a very skilled legislator. I want someone who knows what they're doing," said Daniel Tamm, who worked for Winograd in 2009. "Debra is by far the superior candidate."

Winograd, an antiwar activist, tried twice to unseat Rep. Jane Harman in the congressional district that runs from Venice to San Pedro. In 2010, she took 41% of the Democratic primary vote.

Now that Harman has retired, Winograd is running again for the open seat. But she faces stiff competition from Bowen, the secretary of state, and from L.A. Councilwoman Janice Hahn.

Tamm, a progressive activist and consultant who lives in Sherman Oaks, did not get into the reasons for his departure from the Winograd campaign in 2009. He also didn't say why he isn't supporting Winograd -- only why he is backing Bowen.

"This is a person of wisdom," Tamm said. "She's not somebody who's acting emotionally. She's acting with a great deal of thought and consideration."

Winograd said she hadn't crossed paths with Tamm in a while.

"This is not somebody I work with in the anti-war movement or the labor movement," Winograd said. "He had been hired to help the campaign. It didn't work out."

The Democratic Party is scheduled to make its endorsement in the race on Saturday.

Monday update
: Janice Hahn fell four delegates short of the 60% threshold needed to win the Democratic Party endorsement. Hahn put out a release claiming that her 57% showing is a "game changer" in the campaign.

(Digression: Have you noticed the kudzu-like proliferation of the term "game changer"? Not sure how this got started, though it could be Mark Halperin's fault. Just a couple weeks ago, we heard Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa declare that the pension deal with civilian employees was a "game changer.")

Bowen got 40% of the delegate vote and Winograd got 2%.

I guess the author is hoping people only read the headlines? Read the story and it's obvious - there is no story. What's up LA Weekly? I though you were better tahn shameful political smears.

First things first, Winograd ran in 2006 and 2010, not in 2009. If this person worked for Marcy in 2009 then he didn't even make it to 2010 when the primary was held June 2nd.

Sounds like a disgruntled campaign hack looking for about 30 seconds of earned media.

Looks like a planted story from the Bowen folks obsessed with the fact they can't get any traction in a district she represented for 14 years in the legislature!

Tamm, hmm newsworthy! How about an article with substance.

I was a strong volunteer in 2006, and Volunteer Campaign Coord for South Bay, Torrance area in 2008. I’m on board again – and I’m honored to be volunteering for Marcy Winograd’s campaign.

The author of this article is obviously in desperate search for a story, and evidently -- mindful of the earlier shlock he's written on this race -- harbors some unwarranted hostility toward Winograd. Gene, let us know when you've got a story.

This endorsement is as horrifying as the attacks on working people in WI, MI, IN & the Midwest. How could someone who took $ from a candidate who takes no corporate $ now support Bowen, who took $4000 from ENRON, and chaired the Energy committee that cost CA $38 billion to bail out the utility companies?

Debra is indeed acting with "thought and consideration" on how to win. Marcy has heart and soul and is running to represent the people, not corporatio9ns or the war machine.

This is sour grapes by an incompetent consultant who tried to run a campaign for all of 30 minutes. Daniel Tamm was quickly fired by the Winograd campaign for his incompetence.

The buzz for Winograd just keeps growing, its a word of mouth thing. Tamm seems to have a different agenda than those of us who live in the 36th Districts.

Right now, Debra Bowen's former supporters are shifting to Winograd because they realize Winograd is the true progressive. Bowen has shareholdings in Enron, Citibank, & General Electric (major nuclear & arms contractor) and now we learn that she was formerly a republican. People should check out this comparison chart of how they stand on the issues: http://peterthottam.com/winogr...
