i live in sacramento. and i think anybody should be able to apply for citizenship, and enjoy what good things america has to offer. that being said, i have Mexican/American neighbors who have been good to me when i was sick, and have become friends, they must be racist too. i say that because they are as disturbed as i am about the influx of Mexicans that have flooded into our formerly quiet and peaceful neighborhood. they are obnoxiously loud at ALL hours (ignoring polite request to turn down their sub-woofer powered car and home stereos) there are beer cans in our yards from the adults, food and candy rappers from the kids, and that's just the beginning there is not enough room here to cover the activities that we have observed from our new neighbors. they have a nice little cell phone network, that warns everyone when the police are approaching....suddenly the music is quiet and everyone is indoors. does it matter that they are illegals who are not required to show one lousy piece of documentation, much less abide by our legal system, which they laugh at ?.... it matters to those of us who have been trying to sell our homes and find a safer quieter place to live because the cops tell us their hands are tied. do you think that makes us Racist ? i am a proud liberal who voted for Governor Brown, for better or worse (oi ! ) so i could care less what judgmental *?#%^&! like yourself think. i would LOVE to have some Canadian or European immigrants (we have allot of Russians here, who DO respect their Neighbors). i'm not going to call you stupid, i don't know you well enough to make that judgement, but as a Citizen of the U.S.A. (i'm white, of Irish descent, born in Pakistan... how do you like that ?) Crime is crime and the motive shouldn't hold any sway. An assualt on a White by a Latino is no less severe than an assault on a White by a White or a Latino by a Latino, and so on. Growing up in so cal, I've had numerous latino friends and for the most part met a lot of good people. But I think most agree that the "bad apples" in the latino community are the main cause of most of the bad reputation LA sports fans get. A number of Dodgers fans are turning away slowly due to this. I don't understand why they have to be so violent... even when we win championships.

I'm not sure I would categorize this as a hate crime, but I'm sure they knew he was white. I'm also pretty sure if he were a latino man in his 40's those young guys would not have assaulted him. I'm not saying they did it because he is white, just that they probably would not have done it if he was latino. I have been to a lot of Dodgers games and more often than not I see some of these punk gang-bangers starting fights with people (mostly wearing the opposing teams gear). Richard I've been reading your posts and feel embarassed. I am also a Latino and Mexican-American, but I have an education and do not converse in an idiotic manner. There is no denying that there is xenophobia and racism nowadays against our people. However you are applauding what these two cowards did because he was a Giants fan. Im a Giants fan as well, I live in the Bay Area, but I also like the Dodgers, although I dont follow them as much, since I have family in the LA area and my abuelo was a Dodgers fan as well. There's absolutely no reason why I would ever want to beat up any of my relatives into a bloody pulp simply because they are fans of another team. Thus, what you say makes no sense whatsoever.

As an Italian-American, I cringe when I see shows like Jersey Shore and the Sopranos. More than two thousand years of world-changing history and our heritage is reduced to the buffoon-like caricatures of Snooki Polizzi and Tony Soprano.

Likewise, all the law-abiding Latino fans who attend Dodger games should be publicly distancing themselves and their culture from the two Latino gangsters who attacked Brian Stow. And, just for the record, the thugs were Latino, shaved heads and wardrobe accouterments to boot. Witnesses also told police that these two vermin were shouting expletives in Spanish and English as they kicked Brian into unconsciousness. Instead though, Latino writers like Gustavo Arellano are throwing around the racist word as if Latino gang members aren't capable of a hate crime.

Now's as good a time as any for people like Arellano to be condemning what has happened at Dodger Stadium and not just condoning it because the thugs were Latino.

Instead, the purpose of this article was to point out that it was not a hate crime, like John Kobylt stated it was. He's arguing that it was more of a random act of violence against a person wearing the opposing team's colors. Do you know what was said to Stow or what Stow said to the perpetrators or how the attacks culminated? I highly doubt you have that information.

And, to answer your question, the answer is no, just because someone is able to speak Italian does not make them Italian. Just as Latinos are not ethnically Spanish (i.e. European) simply because they speak Spanish, and I am not ethnically British because I speak English.
