German Shepherd, 14-Months Old, Shot, Beaten by Suspect ID'd as Young Song, Authorities Allege

A German shepherd puppy.
Updated after the jump: The suspect worked on some big movie titles for DreamWorks. He pleaded not guilty today.

This will go down as a dark spot even in the annals of cruel and unusual behavior. Authorities allege that a Pasadena man sneaked into his neighbor's backyard, shot a young German shepherd there with a pellet gun, and beat it while it was muzzled and tied to a fence.

Why? We have no idea.

But we do know that 40-year-old Young Song was arrested yesterday on suspicion of animal cruelty. A Pasadena jail official told us he was being held in lieu of $40,500 bail.

Pasadena Humane Society spokeswoman Ricky Whitman told the Star-News, "This is the worst animal cruelty case we have ever seen."

The beating of the 14-month-old German shepherd, according to the Pasadena paper, was actually captured on the neighbor's security video system.

The incident allegedly happened on April 20 in the 1900 block of Navarro Avenue.

The jail official told the Weekly Song was in court today.

Update: City News Service reports that Song works as an animator for DreamWorks and has some hefty titles under his belt, including Shark Tale, Bee Movie, Flushed Away, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar 2.

Song pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty and dog theft. A court date to determine if there's enough evidence against him for a trail was set for May 26.

Not only does DreamWorks say they have "no comment" when I called to ask if they are going to make a statement regarding the fact that they employ a dog killer to work on their children's movies but the receptionist yelled at me for asking and yelled at me asking if he had been proven guilty. I told her there is video footage of him committing the crime and she just got mad at me and hung up the phone. I think DreamWorks needs to make a statement about this and the fact that they employ someone capable of committing such a heinous crime... I also think that if they are opposed to animal abuse, as a sign of good faith, they should make a big donation to the City shelters.

That receptionist is most likely the lowest paid person at Dreamworks and she no doubt fielded many calls like yours. Talk to their press relations person, talk to HR, talk to Katzenberg -- but to get into it with the receptionist is immature and futile.

I'm the biggest dog-lover you could find; but even I know that without knowing all the details, you cannot pass judgement. And a blog is the last place you want to rely on getting the facts of a story.

Hey, LA Weekly editors: did you accidentally post this story before the writer had finished it? Because it's missing something (not the potential punishment for the perpetrator, the juvenile rantings of some of your readers in this thread notwithstanding). It's missing one of the five Ws: WHAT happened to the dog? Is the dog being treated for its injuries? Is it recovering? Was it euthanized as a result of "the worst animal cruelty case [the Pasadena Humane Society had] ever seen?" Or is it missing and suspected dead--perhaps in the home of the suspect?

Please don't say there wasn't room in the story. There was room for a completely useless Google map that provided nothing other than confirmation that the 1900 block of Navarro Avenue, Pasadena CA 91103 is indeed located in the Pasadena that is shown on that map. Glad we cleared that up. Spoiler: the answers to at least some of these questions are at the link you provided in your story.

Moral of my story (as I used to tell my students at a prominent J School at the well-known university with the bronze statue of a sword-wielding warrior at the center of its south Los Angeles campus): if you're going to rip-off a story from another newspaper, make sure you rip-off the interesting parts!

I know you attributed. You still ripped-off the story. You not only didn't *add* any original reporting, you actually *subtracted* journalism from the piece. Oh, and "Why? We have no idea" sounds great coming from a comedian, less so from a member of congress. But it's inexcusable coming from a newspaper, which we read (yes! Even the Weekly!) specifically for the "why," not for a written record of the staff's lack of curiosity and/or inability to make a phone call. No time to make the call? Find a different story--one without so many loose ends--and rip-off that one instead.

Free pass on "The incident allegedly happened..." because if I keep on with this, my mood will turn sour and I might say something nasty. Disclosure: I don't work for the Star-News or any other newspaper, though I am absolutely not a "civilian" in this context. I don't write comments like this, and I try not to be an a**hole (like I am being right now) to my fellow soldiers in the news wars. But c'mon, LA Weekly. Are you in this business, or not?

What a sick twisted excuse for a human. He should have his penis and testicles chopped off & shuved down his throat, tied to a fence, beaten and left to bleed to death!!! WTF is wrong with this guy? A harmless beautiful puppy? Nothing less than a death penalty is suitable for this loser.
