Revok, Famed L.A. Graffiti Artist, Arrested at LAX, Held on $320,000 Bail

Revok.
Updated after the jump: Revok gets 180 days for violating his probation. Read our latest story about how a street artist like Revok can end up with a higher bail amount than some alleged rapists and molesters -- here.

A "free Revok" campaign erupted on Twitter over the weekend after the Fairfax district street artist was nabbed at LAX.

Sheriff's officials said the man born Jason Williams was arrested at LAX last week as he attempted to head to Ireland.

He had allegedly failed to pay restitution to victims whose property he had vandalized, they said. Sheriff's Lt. Vince Carter:

We take graffiti vandalism very seriously. Criminal graffiti vandals who insist on damaging other people's property are going to jail and need to pay to fix the damage they cause.

The 34-year-old was booked at county jail and held on $320,000 bail.

Revok is one of the artists who worked on this piece.

Ironically (or not) his own work was vandalized, sort of, when graffiti clean-up crews mistakenly began to paint over it earlier this month.

They said neighbors complained about the piece that Revok, Saber Retna Os Gemos, Rime and Norm had painted with the owner's permission on a wall of Known Gallery on Fairfax near Rosewood Avenue.

The company that made the mistake, Graffiti Control Systems, said it had stripped the whitewash and would pay for restoration.

Revok had received probation for a 2009 case of felony vandalism in Indio, California, home of the Coachella festival. He was also arrested last year near a street art store.

Sheriff's officials allege that this is Revok's work.

All this happens as an unprecedented showing, "Art in the Streets," is ongoing at MOCA downtown.

Update: Sheriff's officials claim in a Monday statement that they found graffiti tied to Revok and that they'll recommend further charges:

As a result of evidence discovered during his April 21 arrest (Thursday), other incidents of vandalism were found in the County of Los Angeles. Some of the damage is adjacent to the Metro Blue Line and can be seen by its' patrons. The additional crimes will be submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office by sheriff's deputies for filing consideration.

They also said Revok is "is well known in the graffiti vandalism culture and is a member of the graffiti crew 'Mad Society Kings' or MSK."

He is one of the artists featured in the MOCA exhibition.

Added: Sheriff's officials say he was arrested based on a warrant because he had allegedly violated the terms of his probation.

According to another sheriff's statement:

Detectives were unaware of his location but discovered he had attended the MOCA Graffiti Exhibit, titled 'Art in the Streets'. Further information led investigators to believe Williams was attempting to leave the country.

Update No. 2: Friends of Revok are raising money for his bail. He has a court hearing today.

We're told that he hasn't done any street-based work in more than a year and was purposefully laying low.

We were also told that on Thursday, the day he was arrested, authorities also apparently served a search warrant on a tattoo shop connected to his MSK crew.

Update No. 3: Sheriff's Lt. Carter tells the Weekly Monday afternoon that deputies were working based on a warrant request last week from the L.A. City Attorney's office. That warrant, ultimately signed by a judge, alleged that Revok hadn't paid restitution, as ordered from a previous case.

"Its our job to fight the graffiti on the transit systems in L.A.," Carter said. "It's an all out war."

Update No. 4: The City Attorney's office tells the Weekly that Revok was ordered to pay $3,764.97 in restitution and has so far forked over, and we quote, "$0.00000."

Update No. 5: Revok got 180 days today behind bars for violating probation, a law enforcement official told us.

Graffiti is art. As much as people dislike it, it adds life to the city. Los Angeles without graffiti loses meaning. Its the art of the people. Free Revok.

But if you own a business that's just like owning a house numbnuts. Just because you like graffiti doesn't mean that a respectable business owner wants it on their building. Also nobody is saying graffiti isn't art. You're using the one fucking line that graffiti supporters have about how "It's art man!" instead of looking at the facts. He committed a crime, he didn't pay a fine for committing a crime , so now he's in jail. But maybe when you're older than 16 and own property you'd understand.

Or maybe when you learn more about anything you'd understand that his CONSTITUTIONAL rights are being infringed upon. As far as I can see, that amount of bail is disproportionate to the crime, and as stated in the 8th amendment "Excessive bail shall not be required". But I wouldn't expect some stoner jack offs like you to understand that. But I also wouldn't expect the state of California to make such a HUGE mistake in front of such a huge audience. They probably have tons of precedents backing up their bail and how they're using it. So instead of the retarded phrase "Free [convicted criminal here]" how about "Don't violate Constitutional Rights" which is much easier to use as it happens nearly every day and makes you look less retarded.

OR: Look to this case as precedent http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15... which means, theoretically you can paint graffiti as long as it's in protest of your inability to paint graffiti. Except that toplessness doesn't cause monetary damage, that might get you.

What a piece of shit this Nick Coughlin is. I would almost agree with him if it wasn't for his smug, cock sucking grin as he stroked his 2 inch erect penis (with his left hand) as he types his farcical replies on this website. I went to his facebook and looked at his picture and he is a little peasant-like weasel. There is even a picture of him with a gun down the front of his pants. Maybe they should lock you up you pathetic plastic gangster. At very least that would get you away from a computer and you wouldn't be able to google "is graffiti a crime? If so, how" and copy and paste your bullshit on here. You own property? your just out of your huggies son.

I hope you grow up and find better things to stress about you e-goblin.

Learn punctuation smart ass. Your sentence structure sucks too! And you complain about people over using exclamation points?!? Stop using the word retarded, that's a form of racism and bigotry. Would you call a human being with special needs that? I hope not, asshole.

OJ Simpson's bail was $250,000!!! There's a HUGE difference between street art and double homicide!!! This is BS. Yes, arrest him for destroying property, but $320,000?!??!!?!? Government just wants to suck money from wherever they can. Seriously, something is VERY fucked up with the system is someone who murders your family can get off easier than a STREET ARTIST.

Nick Coughlin
Nick Coughlin

He was held on 250k bail for bail violation in 2008 you fucking retard. He was held on no bail as is the fucking norm in all of the country for homicide in 1989. The point of bail isn't to make money, it's to keep the accused in jail until trial so they can't flee to a non extradition country. After you appear in court you get it back. Get your facts straight before you use 45 fucking exclamation points.

rockstar
rockstar

If your going to call someone a retard ( Which is in poor taste and disrespectful to people with special needs) get your facts straight...The bail violation is for 2009 not 2008 smart ass. Dude was questioning the excessive bail amount requested compared to a murderer or a child molester. I got his point, I don't believe you did.

For heaven's sake his art is fantastic! Los Angeles should spend its money on schools, getting insane people off the streets, having police that respond to assaults and batteries in progress, etc., rather than harassing and chasing down artists.

I agree he should pay his fines, that is what this is about. But all this talk about deserved punishment or destroying property, that's where it gets ridiculous. Revok doesn't destroy property and infact makes very complex thought provoking pieces that are technically amazing. I think the people who get that serious about taking down graffitti artists as hard criminals need to look around. Street art and graffitti are forms of free expression that has gone on in several countries for generations. Do more research before criticizing people. Your efforts to stop crime would be far more useful if you pursued real criminals

So if somebody came into your house and did a beautiful ballet that ended in the production of an amazing sculpture that hovered inches above your head and made you feel as if Creation were staring you in the face only for you to reexamine your entire life and existence as prongs of needle sharp, yet beautifully shaped and meticulously crafted, steel punctured your eyes, moving into your brain and killing you instantly you would think it was justifiable in the name of art? Probably not, but if they same routine was performed in a way that didn't directly damage (and damage in this case means "to harm" with no context or perspective) anybody/thing wouldn't it be better? Do you see what I'm getting at...

YO!

Everyone keeps saying.."what if someone came and paint something on YOUR house's wall." First off real graffiti artists like REVOK dont paint on private properties like houses, its a common rule. and second off, if REVOK came and painted my house by some amazing miracle...i would probably start crying of happiness and wouldnt be any happier having his awesome art on my wall, he's the shit! You guys are complaining about the wrong people...REVOK is a graffiti artist not one of them skill-less taggers you all complain about. Last time i checked art museums actually showed art and uhm MoCA is having a show with this guys art. Yeah art....now go and check out that show!

Marlounlimitmed

How stupid this guy is.......when will enough be enough?? you cant vandalize people's property....its a no brainer!! Imagine if it was your property, and some horrible artist (in your opinion, painted some big ass painting on YOUR wall. He should only paint when given permission, and then all is good and well.

graf_knower
graf_knower

asshole, he only does paint PERMISSION walls now, he's on probation, if you did the research or even read the article in FULL, you'd know he only does COMMISSIONED/PERMISSION pieces now. His full billboards, he paints on the ground and i'm sure either HANGS HIMELF (easy to remove a billboard vinyl) or pays to have the canvases he paints hung on the billboards, either way, his ART is better than ANY half-ass graphic designers bullshit they're going to try and shove down your throat. At least you can look at a graffiti painting or piece and have something to think about instead of some dumb fucking sign selling insurance or whatever dumb fucking product is popular at the time.

He was arrested for not paying restitution for damage he'd caused in another country, I agree he is stupid for not paying that fee because that's ultimately why he got arrested, not for any CURRENT ILLEGAL PAINTING. idiots.

If there were no danger involved in street art, then no one would do it. These guys know they are breaking the law and it's part of the rush. If you really love and support street art, then happily take on the fines and organize people and events that can help support these artists, but don't whine when someone has to accept the occasional tough consequence. Small price for such an iconic artistic identity.

Funny thing is some of the work he has done on Billboards is worth more than a few thousand. Famed Japanese artist Murakami, who had a show at MOCA several years ago demanded the billboard for his exhibition in L.A. that Revok painted. He said he was honored they painted his billboard and wanted it for his studio in Japan. Opinion will always vary about art, but let's remember art is subjective. The companies that clean up are keeping people working. That's how I see it. We should really be worried about the corruption in city hall and the waste of thousands of dollars there. The city council has more bad karma than this dude.
