Black Women Are Scientifically Proven to be Less Attractive to Other Females?

psychology today black white.JPG
Psychology Today
When we saw links to this piece on Facebook we wrote it off as a hoax or a hack. The headline read, "Why Are Black Women Rated Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women ... ?"

Didn't make sense to us in the age of Beyonce and all her womanly features, which seem to be admired and emulated around the globe.

But, no, just such a blog post at Psychology Today was for real. And it set off a firestorm. It read, in part:

... Black women are statistically no different from the "average" [survey] respondent, and far less attractive than white, Asian, and Native American women ...

Of course, the survey cited, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, asked respondents for their opinions about the attractiveness of different races. Those opinions aren't scientific at all, but can be twisted by cultural norms (or ab-norms) and socialization.

(And dig the facial measurement graphics that go along with the post -- as if there's some master-racist formula to beauty. How Third Reich).

To take a group of people's opinions about another group of people and stretch that to mean that there is a scientific, objective conclusion to be made about that second group isn't really science at all. Many Americans don't trust Muslims. It doesn't mean that Muslims are scientifically -- genetically, even -- untrustworthy. (But it does mean that Americans can be provincial).

And make no mistake, the piece repeatedly takes the survey results as a definitive conclusion about the nature of female black beauty.

"Black women are still less physically attractive than non-black women ...," it reads after checking for factors such as intelligence and, yes, body mass index -- as if we're speaking of farm animals, or perhaps something more antebellum.

beyonce.JPG
Really?

The story should have been that some people, even when surveyed, harbor old stereotypes.

Turns out the genius who who wrote the piece is none other than Sotoshi Kanazawa (quite a looker himself) of the London School of Economics.

satoshi kanazawa.JPG
Satoshi Kanazawa

He's an "evolutionary psychologist" who once wrote that if Ann Coulter were president on Sept. 11 she ...

would have ordered the US military forces to drop 35 nuclear bombs throughout the Middle East, killing all of our actual and potential enemy combatants, and their wives and children. On September 13, the war would have been over and won, without a single American life lost.

It isn't the first time Kanazawa has been accused of bending science to fit his racism. He once suggested people sub-Saharan Africa had more health-care problems because they were dumb (not because they were poor).

What confounds us is why Psychology Today would give him a regular blog, called "The Scientific Fundamentalist."

Sure, vive la différence and let the facts speak for themselves and all that. But this guy has been proven time and again to put his beliefs above science. Thank God they had the sense to take the post down. (But it lives on, here).

This whole game of bending "science" to fit racist notions is so last century. Let's leave it there.

At least we know ugly when we see it. It's on the page.

You're an idiot comparing black women to Beyonce. Beyonce uses makeup to make her appear very white, that is why people "admire" her. Fucking idiot.

Please consider signing this petition to hold Psychology Todayaccountable for its content (http://www.change.org/petition....Over and above the content of the recent blog post, which just so happens to berace-related, this is an act of abuse and irresponsibility. This was not"a study." This was not "research." The findings were not"objective." Conjecture is not "proof." And credibleresearch does not use language such as "I think" and "Ibelieve." I am a psychologist and it takes me YEARS to get researchpublished. There is integrity in my work and how I disseminate that work.Kanazawa's rantings were purely editorial, coupled with rather primitivestatistics and presented as credible. It was a joke. And it should have never, ever been presented as scientific. Psychology Today should be held accountable.

I refuse to take this idiots study seriously, being a black woman in London I don't have a problem getting dates and men finding me more attractive than my white female friends.  Just another piece of rubbish to keep black women down.

Kanazawa is ignorant and in need of some type of attention. I will pray for him and his ignorant mind. Evereything that he is saying is "Opinion" based from what he precieves to be beautiful.

all i can say is from the black males i've met they seem more attracted to other races then there own simply because of the way black girls act (obnoxious, always trying to win, think they are the best) not of how they look....

Happy :)
Happy :)

Why does a handful of women make them exclude their entire race? Sounds pretty ignorant to judge an individual from the way SOMEONE ELSE behaved. Even if black girls conformed to this behavior, it wouldn't validate a man's reason to date out. African American women aren't the only ones capable of being obnoxious. That's like me getting chased by a Tiger and jumping into a Lion's den for safety (a bit random). No need to beat a dead horse...Again.

As a black women I really hate this stereotype because I act nothing like this, and know tons of other African American women who also don't, so maybe your limited perception is flawed. And the majority of the black men I know prefer black women.

... and let's not forget that an individual's agreeing or disagreeing with Kanazawa's blog post is not the point of the controversy.

The point of the controversy is that an individual's or a defined group's opinion, while reflective of that individual's or group's "truth" (and for whatever reasons), doesn't necessarily equate a universal and objective or scientific truth. Even if that opinion is presented as such.

That's Kanazawa's problem.

In his post, Kanazawa reveals a scientific method that legitimizes a universal outcome based upon a conditional if-then inquiry. There are more sophisticated and compelling problems with his science, but his peers do a much more exquisite job defining and revealing them in other articles than I could do anywhere.

Let's try this again:

People (Louisianans? Americans? School cafeteria workers?) think patchwork catahoula leopard dogs are the least attractive of the breed, thus patch catahoula leopard dogs are indeed the least attractive. Review graphs and charts that illustrate those findings. We hypothesize those findings occur because the patchwork variety usually shows some red coloring. Red makes people feel uncomfortable.

Whatever anyone thinks of Kanazawa's track record, he is certainly not a lay person in the scientific community. So why the sloppiness? And that's where Kanazawa's integrity as a scientist begins -- or continues -- to take a lot of flack.

If his post had aimed to hypothesize the world's least beautiful color of catahoula leopard dog, his peers would have written off his pseudoscience as well, just that. But Zanazawa chose to set his sights on people instead. You might not get the horns for veiling your dislike for a color of dog with pseudoscience, but using that same methodology to promote cultural biases against entire groups of Homo sapiens will invite some skewering.

Why does anyone find *that* surprising?

I read the original blog post early this week before it was removed from Psychology Today's web site, and before it was the subject of this cultural mini-controversy.

Regardless of the post's subject matter, Kanazawa's scientific and statistical method has serious problems. Because of the post's subject matter, those problems can't be ignored -- that's the only reason why most people know the post even exists. After all, the conclusion Kanazawa's post reaches is hardly novel or new.

Some measured responses that illuminate why the Kanazawa's post is under fire, for those who are interested in transparency and scientific objectivity, to the extent at which it can ever be achieved:

Well if that's the results of his survey then that's the results.  I for one am very attracted to black women, and even that's relative, in other words not all black women but those that meet my criteria.  Guess what, not many women are attracted to me as a black man too, and they have their reasons.  This is nothing new; this information could've been garnered from dating sites, as the statistics speak for themselves.  Not all women in general are Hollywood material anyway.  What intrigues me most though is why such studies are done in the first place.  I'll teach my daughters to be the best Christians they can be, that's very important to me.   So from that perspective how important is this, really.  You know basically there has never been a study where blacks for one reason or another has ever resulted in favorable results; so why the furor over this, get in line.  As you know blacks have more pressing issues to confront and deal with than opinions about their looks.  It would be nice if this indeed was our greatest concern if and when that happens, we've come a long way.

This is absurd to think that black women aren't attractive. Apparently someone who wrote or comment with this biased view on attractive black women either has his head up in his ass or just plain blind & stupid moron because he simply could not tell what beauty really is. So much for this ignorant racist idiot!!

I tend to agree with the findings of this psychologist to a large degree, however Beyounce would be considered an exception. I'm sure there are other exceptions, but for the most part a black woman has certain characteristics very different than non black women. For instance, protruding buttocks, long arms, thick lips, unappealling legs and specific characteristics of their feet.  Many have big hips. Believe it or not, I am not a racist, but one who calls it the way I see it.

Gene S.
Gene S.

I disagree with the article because it was solely opinionated. Psychology experiments don't register with me due to OPINIONS which vary from person to person. You stated black women have unappealing legs, I disagree. Does it matter? Of course not. Satoshi's reading shouldn't have been published because it was unnecessary. Knowing what others think about you is honestly a waste of knowledge. Are his findings going to stop sex trafficking in the middle east? Stop the hunger pangs of children in Africa? Give homes to orphan kids? Cure cancer or AIDS? How about recover the life of a soldier who died fighting for the protection of his wife and newborn daughter? His findings are NOT the gospel and shouldn't be preached like it. But, to each his own.

I have a question for you Richard.  If all of the things you listed about black women are unattractive, then why are so many white women getting collagen injected into their lips to make them bigger, spending hours in tanning beds to make themselves darker, I've even heard of butt lifts and implants to make their backsides look larger. If all of that is soooo unappealing, then why are white women getting these procedures in droves.  Are they trying to make themselves more "unattractive"?

As a black person, that's your opinion and I don't think its racist.  I don't like flat pancake butts, and girls without lips nor women who can crush walnuts with their bare hands. Pale skin is atrocious, but that's just my impression of white women; to each his own.

ARCHON

Oddly enough the only BIGOTRY I can perceive in this item was interjected by its author Dennis Romero, and not Sotoshi Kanazawa (an individual with a certainly more celebrated scientific education).

See, angry Dennis doesn't get we live in the era of OPRAH, MICHELLE OBAMA, STAR JONES, WHOOPIE GOLDBERG, and MO'NIQUE not just Beyonce, and the proof is in the visual pudding...does Dennis find any of the former Black Women attractive, by any means? Is it their BODY MASS INDEX  Dennis doesn't find appealing?

Or, maybe their facial features do not fit into the "golden ratio" standard (Leonardo DaVinci created that grid, NOT the Third Reich, genius) that applies to more widely accepted standards of beauty in The West, for Dennis Romero to find Oprah, Star and Whoopie attractive?

It's amusing but Dennis Romero find Beyonce "attractive" using of the same BIGOTED STANDARD that had "light skin" girls featured in THE COTTON CLUB 80+ years ago.'way to keep it  real Dennis!

Marqwan Sirls
Marqwan Sirls

Many men find Oprah, Michelle, Star Jones and Whoopie attractive. Just like they find Roseanne, Jocelyn Wildenstein, Kelly Osbourne, and Rosie O'Donnell attractive. Many men and women will still see sexy in individuals who aren't 20 something, thin, white, blonde and blued eyed. If not everyone agrees on what's beautiful (and they obviously don't), then beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it can't be explained scientifically or by someone's bmi.

ps... Your academic achievement clearly doesn't erase your racism.

Truthbetold
Truthbetold

I think your response excellent, but a picture of Beyonce doesn't necessarily disprove his point.  Beauty is often in the eyes of the beholder and the DaVinci accepted standard, I say so what.  In terms of keeping it real your opinion regarding the issue is conspicuously missing, but perhaps your DaVinci statement says allot.

ARCHON
ARCHON

A picture of Beyonce doesn't add anything to Dennis Romero's opinion when pictures of Oprah, Star, Whoopie and Mo'Nique quickly shoot down his mindless PC attack on Kanazawa's premise. In terms of 'keeping it real', my opinion has little to do with Dennis Romero's attack on the scientist Sotoshi Kanazawa's assertion. And, you're correct, my statement on DaVinci does say a lot, it says: I know more than Dennis Romero.

SO_DRUH_MATIC
SO_DRUH_MATIC

I honestly don't think Oprah or Star Jones are pretty (even after star lost weight, now she looks like a lollipop). Mo'Nique is actually kind of hot though. And to throw out Whoopie like all black women look like her. Even black people think whoopie isn't a looker but Dany Devito would probably still hit that because he's a man and this was a study done by a bunch of (presumably straight) females. There are plenty of hideous Caucasian celebrities to throw out there too. He could have said Gabrialle Union, Taraji P Henson, or Toni Braxton and you still would have found an issue that had nothing to do with light or dark skin. It's not a mindless PC attack. If you're going to make such a bold scientific declaration, you should have a sound experiment. His work for the most part boils down to a survey on how women perceive beauty.

On another note, it is not at all racist if someone says he is not attracted to black women. You can't help who your body responds to. If they're not attracted they're just not and that goes for any race. Now if he is attracted and he denies it because your black, then you might have something. (not that you would really know either way). Black women sometimes are just so rigid about not dating outside their race that they alienate themselves, and then want to play the victims.

He did surveys and these are the results.  He didn't tell people what to say, this is their opinions, so why are you killing the messenger?

And yes, the results are scientific, as in humans decide what is attractive and what's not, who did you want him to ask?  Was he suppose to ask monkeys who they thought was attractive?

He pulls out science and you pull out.... Beyonce?  Seriously, that's your response?  "Your science must be wrong because Beyonce is beautiful."  Wow, how juvenile, and then you insult the way the scientist who did the study looks.

And I wouldn't be linking to PZ Myers as an example of anything because he's a quack, just read his other blog posts.

Marqwan Sirls
Marqwan Sirls

First and foremost, the study in itself is inappropriate and unnecessary regardless of its results. What good does this study do for anyone? I can definitely name a few harms. So no, he didn't have to ask anyone or anything at all. Two, this study, my friend, isn't science or even scientific. Science provides universal truths, that will, if experimented consistently and properly, not change or variate. Therefore, you can't conclude universal TRUTHS from a handful of OPINIONS, which in this study, can only be opinions based on the cultural upbringing of those surveyed. If the surveyed individuals are  all American, for example, they'll probably believe that the most beautiful woman is a very petite, thin blonde haired, fair skinned, blue eyed woman. That automatically takes black woman out of the popular vote. Doesn't mean they're not attractive. It means America is oppressive; toward blacks, women, the elderly and plus-sized individuals. Three, again, beauty is an opinion. What a red neck will find sexy, a Muslim will find inappropriate. What a black man will call a beautiful body, a white man will call fat. What a punk rock kid will find attractive, a hip hop kid will find dirty. And even these perceptions will vary quite often. There has been nothing more racially oppressive than this article. Individuals like this, esteemed professors and professionals, who found it necessary to differentiate the physical attractiveness between blacks and whites (or anyone else), have done so to confirm a very ethnocentric hierarchy (to say the very least) in order to maintain power.Yes. The messenger needs to be killed (meaning his blog needs to be discontinued). People like him have drawn too much blood in our nation.

So according to your logic, if I did a survey and the results came back that the earth was inded flat, then that must just be the way it is since I "didn't tell people waht to say", and this "was their opinion".

Beyonce isn't even black though. She's part black just like Obama and Halle Berry.

Obama isn't the first black president. He's the first half white president and the first half black president. Why are you telling people to cease ignorance when you insist two mixed people were both voted People Magazine's (who's voting system is derived how?) rather than two black people.

Second. His reference to Sub-Saharan Africans being less intelligent couldn't be more true. Asians, Middle Eastern, and White people invented practically everything up till the 19th century. There aren't any white people who live in tribes who's most advanced technology is rubbing sticks together for fire.

Look at New Orleans. Loaded with black people, and soon after the Hurricane, nothing but robbing and stealing. Now take Japan hit by the tsunami. Full of asians. What did they do?Help each other.

Yes, there are black people who are smart and beautiful, but they are clearly outnumbered by so many less evolved people who happen to have black skin. Sometimes racism is true. Deal with it. Look in your history books.

Jessica

Beyonce isnt black? well please educated us on her race seeing as how her father is full blooded african american and her mother is half creole  which in turn makes beyonce 1/4 creole, while creole is a mixture of african, french, and native american. So please in your response clarify. Now she may not be "full black" as you say, however she is just as much "black" as the majority of african americans in this country because the african american race is a mixture of black, white, and native american. So in this case, no one is really "black" all african americans are only "part black" which in turn makes your point invalid.

Yes everyone knows Obama and Halle Berry are both mixed, I agree. However, who honestly refers to President Obama as the first "half white half black" president, please send me a link so I can view this classification. When Halle Berry won her Oscar was she refered as "the first mixed woman to win an academy award" If so, I would like to view that as well. Its funny that when convienent people use "bi-racial" or "not fully black" to strengthn their argument all the while knowing if they "look black" (meaning complexion and features) you classify them as black under any other circumstances.

And to respond regarding your new orleans bit those "robbing black people".In the same news story, when black people "robbed" the stores, you are right they were portrayed as "looting black people" however when white people "robbed" the stores, they were portrayed as "trying to survive". So while everyone is looking in our HIStory books that were written by white people to erase and shape the histories of certain groups of people maybe you should do some research so that your responses are more informed, and actually make sense.

"Yes, there are black people who are smart and beautiful, but they are clearly outnumbered by so many less evolved people who happen to have black skin." wow, because you clearly know every black person in the world.

so in response since i know every white, asian, latino, and gay person in the world i will say.

"There are a number of white people who are actually good people and care about others, but they are clearly outnumbered by the less intelligent redneck cousin kissing racists that "rule" the world.

There are a number of very educated latinos in the world but they are clearly outnumbered by the less intelligent boarder hoppers who come over and "steal jobs" without speaking english."

To generalize a whole group of people based off some interactions, stereotypes, and bias media is the essence of ignorance. but hey your ignorant. Deal with it.

and dont give me any b.s. about the media not being bias in its portrayals of minorities, because if you believe that, you are dumber than I realized.

I would politely ask that YOU look into your history books. Africa as a whole is a social culture, and a pinnacle of the culture is the idea of being happy with what you have. Historically, cultures that happen to be white have been the ones that have exterminated peoples and eradicated cultures worldwide so that they can own, and have more, more, and more. You say white cultures invented everything up until the 19th century, however, too many were also normalized killers up until the same time.  But for some reason, history has the tendency to normalize the horrific acts and greed of white cultures, and highlight, demean and forever remember all acts of black cultures.

Your usage of the word "dumb" is subjective. For the last few years I've lived six months in New York City, and six month in a Sub-Saharan African country annually. While both cultures have beautiful aspects to them, I have found that many Africans in general live happy lives, because there is an ability to be happy with the present. Meanwhile, unfortunately I have found that too many Americans are miserable. Despite there being a better health care system and the culture having all the perks of a 1st world country, the culture is insatiable in its quest for more, more, more. In addition to that, the value of real community and foundational compassion seems to have disappeared.

So if prioritizing love and community, being happy with what you have, and not valuing ultimately vacant 'technology' is what you consider dumb, than so be it.

Personally, I would rather die surrounded by community, thinking about how much time I spent loving, being happy and enjoying what I had. Rather that than reaching my death bed, only to  reminisce about how much life I spent on my Mac and gadgets without really communicating, how lucky I was to have access to technology and material things, and how love just filled in the gaps.
