An assault suspect arrested in East Hollywood today is reportedly one of these two. Witnesses say he was bald, possibly making him the one on the left.
Update: 31-year-old Giovanni Ramirez is under arrest for the beating. According to KTLA, "he was booked for assault with a deadly weapon, and is being held on $1 million bail."

Updated after the jump: One man has been arrested for the Bryan Stow beating. Several other individuals were taken into police custody for questioning. Originally posted at 11 a.m.

Two Dodgers fans were reportedly called from inside their East Hollywood apartment by a SWAT-team bullhorn while the sun rose behind the fog this morning.

As three stories' worth of neighboring tenants looked on, the two suspects -- a man and possibly a woman believed to have aided in the near-death beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow on Opening Day -- were handcuffed and transported to the Northeast Community Police Station in Atwater Village for questioning, City News Service reports.

The arrests are a huge turning point in an investigation that involves a $200,000 reward, 17 20 full-time LAPD detectives and two of the most infamous composite sketches in L.A. history, mounted overhead the city via 200 "WANTED" billboards. The Los Angeles Times spoke with the manager of the suspects' apartment building after the 7 a.m. spectacle:

According to apartment building manager Maritza Camacho, police, using loudspeakers and with guns drawn, called out to the occupants of Apartment 25. Inside was one of the men police suspect in the March 31 beating that left Stow with brain damage.

As residents of the three-story building stood watching from balconies, police removed, one by one, the people who were inside the apartment, according to Camacho. Among them was a man with a bald head and tattoos on his neck and arms, she said, a description that appeared to match the vague sketches released by police of one of the two suspects. She added that he did not appear to resist being taken into custody.

City News Service then reported that there were two suspects being questioned at the station. CNS reporters tell the Weekly that this information was based on a KTLA report (and KTLA partners with the Times) that said "a man and a woman were taken into custody."

Now, the KTLA piece reads:

Detectives say they have several strong leads, particularly pertaining to the female driver of the car that took the two suspects away on the night of the beating.

Indeed, the latest clues unveiled to the public were in regard to the female getaway driver, who LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said last week was wearing Dodger Andre Ethier's No. 16 jersey at the time of the assault. Witnesses also saw a 10-year-old boy in the car.

On May 18, ESPN Los Angeles reported that police had "shifted their focus to identifying the woman who helped the two assailants escape after the attack." She was described as a short Latina woman in her 20s "with brown or dyed hair in a ponytail."

Northeast detectives tell us that all will be revealed at a 4 p.m. press conference today, taking place above Dodger Stadium in Lot G. Updates to come.

Bryan Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic and father of two from Santa Cruz, was moved from Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center to San Francisco General Hospital just last Monday. The Mercury News reports today that "Stow remains in critical condition in a coma but has opened his eyes."

Regardless, the recent LAPD progress comes as a huge relief to the family:

"It's huge. We are excited to say the least. My mom and I haven't stopped shaking since the call," [Stow's sister Bonnie] said. "At least they have one in custody. It's one less thing on our minds."

Update: The Times reports that there were several people in Apartment 25 with the tattooed assault suspect, and that police were led there on a tip from a parole agent. It appears news stations have surrounded the place, a la Mildred Baena:

There were actually a number of people from the East Hollywood apartment taken into custody this morning:

Camacho said that the man taken into custody Sunday morning had not been a longtime resident of the East Hollywood apartment building, but she had begun to see him coming and going in the last few months. She said a woman, her husband, their two adult children, and the woman's brother lived in the two-bedroom unit. Police detained the other people who were in the apartment Sunday morning, Camacho said.

Update, 4:30 p.m.: At the press conference, Chief Beck said the police search warrant was for the place (located on Mariposa Avenue, near the 101), not a particular person, but that the LAPD will be booking one man for Stow's assault this evening. Police are still searching for two more suspects.

Apart from that: "Right now, it's extremely important that we keep as much of the investigation confidential as possible." CBS2 reports the following:

"We have one suspect in custody and multiple, additional people detained at the residence of the search warrants and we're currently continuing our investigation," said Lt. Rick Stabile of the LAPD Northeast Division. ...

Beck said he wouldn't give any more details on the suspect in custody as they were still searching for two others.

Footage of the SWAT raid:

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, with typical bad PR luck, couldn't make the conference, but sent a messenger to thank Beck and let the public know his "thoughts are with Bryan Stow."

Before anyone else pontificates some more about this being a hate crime taking away from the seriousness of the actual crime itself: Attempted Murder here is the US Definition of Hate Crimes:

"A hate crime is usually defined by state law as one that involves threats, harassment, or physical harm and is motivated by prejudice against someone's race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation or physical or mental disability. Laws vary by state and if hate crimes are provided for by statute, the definitions of hate crimes and penalties imposed vary. States that have hate crime statutes provide harsher penalties forsuch offenses."

Now.  From the Mercury News:  Stow, 42, is a Santa Clara County AMR paramedic who lives in Live Oak. He was wearing a San Francisco Giants jersey in a Dodger Stadium parking lot when two men in Dodgers gear attacked him from behind and took him to the ground.

Every single account of this horrible incident from the people who witnessed it to the family to the police states that Stow was attacked because he was wearing a Giants Jersey on Opening Day at Dodgers Stadium.

Trying to change it into anything else after months of this horrible news is disingenuous.  Not to only to the people of San Francisco and anyone else who are Giants fans (of any race creed or sexual orientation) but to this family itself.

This crazy SOB would have tried to beat the crap out of anyone.  We should continue to stick with the main thrust of this:  The safety and well being of any human being who walks up into Dodgers stadium who just happens to be there for the opposing team, the fast and hopeful recovery and love to the Stow family and the really fast and swift justice of these scumbags.

Be better people, LA Weekly posters.  I know you have it in you.

What you have to remember is the justice dept will never punish hate crimes committed against whites it has been that way for decades rather it promotes and fosters hate crimes against whites it has been that way for decades. It's just like Joseph Stalin said at the world communist convention in 1928 the communists would use their power in the press in this country to continually keep the race issue before the public and at every possible opportunity villify the white population in order to establish a " black soviet state " in the deep south and they would finally incite the blacks to rise up kill all the whites and take their land ......Haiti, Zimbabwe, South Africa ....civil rights is communist funded Michael King( Martin Luther) was communist,so was Malcolm X and so is Jesse Jackson and Sharpton 140 million slaughtered in less than 100 years just in Russia and China alone not to mention Burma Vietnam Cambodia Cuba ......... no it was not racially motivated it couldn't be because the victim was white

Shaun Landry

It was not racially motivated PERIOD..  This guy was just ready to take out anybody in an SF Jersey because he is unstable piece of violent crap.

Jesus Christ almighty.  He would have tried to kill ANYONE because the guy is just a plain criminal.  Now FOUR TIMES OVER. This was attempted murder. If you want to try to get him on a hate crime good luck and god bless....because in the State of California it is IMPOSSIBLE to get real Hate Crime Criminals in Jail.

Ask anyone who has had their house spray painted. Ask the family of Matthew Sheppard.

The victim was white, the criminals are hispanic, isn't this a "hate" crime?

Captain_Ownage

since whites are a minority in los angeles and the majority mexicans beat this man it is a hate crime

Shaun Landry

Well the definition of a hate crime one would have to assume during the horrible beating of Bryan that he was assaulted with racial slurs throughout.  What he was assaulted with was being beaten because he was not a Los Angeles Dodgers Fan.

I lived in San Francisco for almost ten years before moving here (and originally from Chicago) and to be honest?  I'm afraid to officially wear my Giants or Cubs Jersey in this town.  It really has nothing to do with race and this is coming from an African American woman.  This is a really whacked and scary Los Angeles Fan Base thing.  The fans here burn down their own city.  If they *win or lose*  LA Sports Fans set their own fans cars on fire and beat them up.

This is not a warning some warning from Caucasians to Hispanics.  This is a small reminder to anyone who is a rabid sports fan:  It's just a damn game.  For the love of god.  It's *just a baseball game*  I'm sure this would have happened to any race in that parking lot sporting a San Francisco Giants Jersey. You see...the Giants won last year.  The Dodgers did not.

That is what makes it so horrible.

After reading ths man's criminal record...He was ready to beat up anybody of any race.  Period.  This man is a Menance.  TO ANY RACE.  He should have been put in jail the first time he shot off a firearm in public.  Nine out of ten...at a Dodgers game.

Walkershelly86
Walkershelly86

if you were Latino wearing another team's jersey, you might get shit, but you wouldn't get beat on!! that makes it about Race!! n' if it were reversed, it would definitely be seen as a race issue!! I'm tired of Racism only being about whites, but no other race when it's obvious other races are even More Racist in many respects!! If you wore yur jerseys you'd get beat on too cause yur black... sorry, that's racism!! n' his Kids were there??!!!! seriously, I hope these animals are put away for Life!!! and then we wonder why we resent being invaded by thugs??!!! not about race, pple, it's about respect for fellow human beings and respect for the country you now call home and the pple here before you!!! grow up and stop being such hateful little bastards!!! sick behavior is Not ok!!!

Shaun Landry
Shaun Landry

...with that said:  I hope the woman who let these men get away get the same maximum jail time as the men who beat this man half to death.  A KID in the car with her?  It's time for that kid to find new parents.

Shaun Landry
Shaun Landry

It is a hate crime but not against race.  It is a hate crime against the type of sports team you like.
