Jesus Hates Skater Kids: 'Lincoln Ramp' Half Pipe in Venice Torn Down by Fun-Killers at United Methodist Church

The Lincoln Ramp in better days
Updated after the jump: Photos of the Lincoln Ramp being dismantled, set to be U-Hauled -- in sad little strips -- to various parts of the Valley. Plus, the reverend's defense.

The riff-raff who frequent the Lincoln Ramp in east Venice Beach are feeling the wrath of god this spring. Or, at least, one of god's interpreters: the notorious Reverend A. Okechukwu Ogbonnaya (yes, that is his name; yes, the children at whom he wags his holy finger make due fun of him for it).

We have the honor of driving by the half pipe's cranny along Lincoln Boulevard daily -- a flash of chain-link and plywood, graffiti and battle scars. Perhaps even more than Ed Ruscha, another city treasure recently run out by a parking lot, these kids put the art in Venice.

The skate park on the boardwalk isn't quite the same. Being the boardwalk, it's more a tourist photo op with a side of gang shootings. So... Lame. And this isn't the first time Ogbonnaya has tried to cleanse his United Methodist Church of scrubby youth:

In "Teens Worship in a Parking Lot After Venice Pastor Shuns the Skateboard Set," Weekly reporter Tibby Rothman spoke with a set of perfectly religious Venice kids who, being Venice kids, had their own ideas about how they wanted to praise the lord -- with raps, poetry and whatever else their zany little souls desired.

That didn't sit well with Ogbonnaya -- so he forced the kids out into the church's parking lot.

Along the way, we might add, the new reverand has also eliminated a long-standing LGBT-friendly youth program and food-pantry services for the homeless. The skate park was next on his list, reported Rothman:

[Ogbonnaya's predecessor] Ziegert saw the skate ramp as a way to draw in the at-risk kids -- not to convert them but to provide a sanctuary from gangs or other troubles, which he saw as ministering to them. The popular Ziegert thought all people who entered the church grounds should be respected, even if they were not pursuing a traditional religious track.

But Heidi Lemmon, head of SkatePark Association USA, which owns the ramp and is a tenant in the church's community building, says Ogbonnaya sees the skateboarders as a detriment -- and is demanding that Lemmon remove the ramp.

Now, Lemmon writes in an email: "Well they won -- the ramp is on tear down stages now. Kids are devastated."

Writes the (somewhat kooky, but seemingly good-hearted) Peggy Lee Kennedy, a tireless bum and RV-dweller advocate, on the Venice Arts Council blog today:

The [Church's] Chair of the trustees, Patty Delli-Bovi, served Heidi Lemmon with a notice to seize abandoned property: the Lincoln Ramp and the Skate Ramp shed. I am absolutely sure Heidi was waiting for an eviction notice from this [not so nice] trustee chair person or the new pastor person. Anyone who knows anything knows Heidi did not abandon this property. Anyway, the Lincoln Ramp is going away now.

Basically, the United Methodist Church wants to exist in a little fairytale land (good luck, on Lincoln) where nobody's homeless and kids won't be kids. As long as all that restless inner-city mischief isn't happening on their premises -- where it could, many feel, better be contained by a controlled environment -- it's of no concern to the reverend.

Jonathan Zeichner, the former executive director of troubled-youth helper Inside Out, told the Weekly in December:

"Once the kids were there, they could get involved in any number of [positive] things. I don't think that it always worked perfectly, but it had value. There were kids who came and hung out there, who I saw out on the streets getting into trouble when they weren't on the skateboard ramp."

Well, the scuzzy intersection of Venice Boulevard and Lincoln just lost the spark that made it ghetto beautiful -- and the United Methodist Church has succeeded in making Christianity as unhip as possible in the hood.

Update: We went to go check out the wreckage Tuesday evening. As expected, it was a huge downer. Three or four kids from Thousand Oaks were prying up the plywood, for to transplant as much of the half pipe as they could in their own backyards, as Lemmon -- who fostered the project -- looked on.

(Lemmon tells us today that the parents of another young skater kid in the Valley are taking home some pieces as well.)

What they can't take, of course, is the inimitable mashup of street art that has collected here; the secret little room beneath the ramp, now baring its guts to the sunlight, as the Thousand Oaks kids salvage what they can; and the culture that has formed, seven years deep, in the nook between the United Methodist Church and the Boys & Girls Club.

The reverend was also hanging around, as usual, on Tuesday -- on the other side of the fence, of course.

He expressed his frustration that nobody was considering his side of the story. Indeed, we watched one twentysomething with a skateboard walk in from Victoria Avenue, tell Ogbonnaya what a terrible person he was, then skate away all huffy without letting the reverend speak.

Here's how Ogbonnaya sees it: The kids come onto church property; they do drugs and cuss and flip him off; they leave behind trash, empty 40s, porn mags and all sorts of unmentionables. You know, kid stuff.

So why should the reverend -- who holds a PHD in theology, who is trying to make the United Methodist Church in Venice back into a safe, desirable place to worship -- tolerate that kind of treatment? Especially when he's paying $1,000-something per month year for ramp insurance.

It's a culture clash if we've ever seen one. Unfortunately, the ramp is gone now, and the two camps are even more bitter toward each other than before.

IMG_0539.jpg
Ron Stebenne, a youth minister from Orange County who sings the praises (no pun intended) of what he calls "skate ministry," says that, when done right, a simple ramp do wonders for a Christian community.

"Teen boys have a tendency to test their environment," Stebenne says. "A person like the pastor -- someone, we hope, with common sense and decency -- can step in and redirect that energy in a positive way."

He adds that "churches sometimes treat non-churched kids as 'the others,'" in turn missing a golden opportunity to help them out.

On the other hand, Ogbonnaya, who's technically in charge of the property, feels skater punks are driving away potential church members.

But in a neighborhood like Venice, a hotbed for counterculture, says Stebenne, skater punks are the people. And "in the eyes of god, they are worthy."

Hope you know that all the United Methodist Church is not so intolerant, nor in a fairytale land where nobody's homeless and kids won't be kids.  In fact, the UMC as a whole does extraordinary ministry with the poor and with kids.  So sorry this situation doesn't represent us well.  Rev. Pam, UMC

As both a young person and a United Methodist (going to seminary this Fall) I am disappointed that yet another UMC is running off youth.  Not to mention the loss of the food programs and the distancing from the LGBTI community.  Actions like this will only lead to the further decline of both the United Methodist Church and American Christianity in general.

I was so bummed to drive by recently and see the ramp dismantled, that was the best mini ramp in all of Los Angeles!  And it was public.  I have ridden there many times over the years and it was always in top notch condition.  One of the only places in LA where people could learn how to ride a ramp in a safe environment.  One of my buddies used to organize punk shows there with traveling musicians where everyone came together to support one another.  So much positivity from that place which centered around the ramp.  It even brought me in there and I despise religion.  I even walked into the building because I was made to feel welcome and had pleasant conversation with the people who worked there.  What a loss for the community.  Very un-religious.  This type of hypocracy is why smart people choose not to be a follower of false doctrines (Hebrew has no literal English translation, so meaning is lost in modern interpretations).  Dr. O, your rose colored glasses are covered with shit.

I saw first hand the positive impact this ramp had on the community. The whole thing is a damn shame. This Pastor and the church politicians who forced this change are a bunch of cunts.

The Paster O has run everyone out. He is not friendly and doesnt want anyone there. If you dont get the message in his manner he will come right out and tell you. I went to the church before he came but bow he tells me not to come inside the gate. I was talking to Carol the other day inside the gate. As I headed out he was driving in honking at me and saying you can not come in here. Now that he has run everyone out is he going to sell the property? There must have been a reason he told everyone to leave.

This Church has been destroyed by rightwing bigot's that took it over with the help of the district supervisor of the Methodist Church,Cedrick Bridgeforth.Okechukwu Ogbonnaya has brought 3rd world bigotry to Venice with the help of white rascists and Gay haters.

The problems that existed at that church have caused this reaction. Perhaps the baby was thrown out with the bathwater?

Years and years of unacceptable behavior at that church have likely caused the Methodists to re-evaluate how they're contributing to the community and how the community contributes (or not) to them.

Under the guise of religion, a really selfish crowd was running formal sessions at that church to teach people how to evade the cops and continue living in RVs on the streets of Venice with the blessing of its former Reverend and leadership.  In addition, the neighborhood has had ongoing battles with drugs, transiency and some pretty disgusting trash left in the streets for years with the church under its former leadership.

I bet that the new Reverend is just trying to clean that place up and weed out all of the BS that's been hiding behind the veils of religion to conduct some rather un-church-like activities. There may be more to this story than just a Reverend versus a skate ramp. And I'll bet that once he weeds out the "tireless" ones who have been fueling the rather un-religious activities, he'll revisit the idea of providing a place for kids to seek refuge from the mean streets. And I'm sure he'll welcome the community's involvement.

That reverend  should check again in his Bible what was Jesus example (an example he is supposed to follow) because Jesus accepted all kinds of people, from prostitutes, thiefs, rich, poor, from the youngest to the oldest, etc... and everyone of them when came in touch with Him and the gospel were changed forever. So with this way of acting, he is sending a wrong message to the society, a message that is not what the Bible teaches, because God commands to us to be "the light of the world and the salt of the world". Rev. Ogbonnaya this ramp is one effective tool in your hands to spread the gospel and to ministry....Ogbonnaya this ramp is one effective tool in your hands to spread the gospel and to ministry....

I actually rode here in a regular basis, unlike many who comment. I have never once seen drugs, or 40's or porn in the area. Most of the kids are there for a reason and it was to ride, skate or meet up and go ride and skate somewhere else. Those bad seed excuses are just To validate the Bad descion. Holy my ass. Just proves religion is a farce.

This is very interesting and very intriguing as well. Thanks for the information.

Too bad! I did a demo there 2 years ago. I saw this skateboard program as very important.

Since this pastor arrived, the congregation of the church has undergone a compositional conversion.  The old congregation used to feel safe and welcome in a church that would accept the unique expressions of young and creative people.  The youth who used to worship there were made unwelcome in first subtle and then forceful ways.

Now the congregation consists almost entirely of a small number of people who have come since the arrival of Dr. O.  The old congregation no longer felt safe nor welcome.  Dr. O preached about weeding out the bad seeds, that not just anyone could be a member of the church (even if they had been worshipping at this church for far longer than he).

The old congregation used to bring their own poetry, raps, and prayers to share with others and co-create the service;  now the service is top-down authoritarian, with the pastor dictating every moment and subsuming the participation of the congregation to his personal vision.

When I first heard, long ago, the rumors that he wanted to get rid of the ramp, I was disbelieving.  Who would want to get rid of a place that clearly attracts young people, makes them happy, makes a safe place where they can share a healthy passion with others?  I have met so many young people there who were able to hold a friendly and human conversation, able to share their board with a young aspirant who did not have one, able to bring their art and creativity to maintain a hospitable place for them.  I cannot believe that the pastor sincerely made an effort to see who these youth were, to actually talk to them in a respectful and human way and be open to the possibility that these were the very people who might have the most to contribute to the church and the community that could exist around it.

What does it mean when a small, but healthy and creative congregation leaves so soon after the arrival of a new pastor along with the attrition of the anchoring church members and activities?  How is this to be interpreted?

Why is the church not a place of openness and welcome?  Why was an existing community dispelled without even a gesture towards their value and potential?

I think the neighborhood would disagree with you. The old congregation may have made a welcoming spot for themselves, but the neighbors felt threatened by the constant presence of homeless who broke into the church grounds, abused drugs and alcohol and passed out on the lawn of the church. The old congregation abused the church and wore out their welcome. It's sad to see an outlet for local youths disappear, but if the people that ran it were not open to working with the new Reverend to make a hospitable place for all, not just a select few, I'm not surprised. Hopefully the church will be able to get on it's feet and start programs of it's own.

No homeless broke into church grounds. The kids doing drugs and drinking are from the neighborhood there and they are not even skaters. In fact two live across the street and a few doors away. AND the ramp insurance cost $1,000 a year - not a month!

An interesting side note to this : The day that the ramp was torn down and locked out for the public, 3 of the local bike riders who rode there everyday were arrested for joy riding and possession of illegal firearms. If the ramp had been open that morning, those young boys would have been there all day and would have passed up the opportunity for a joyride and it may very well have saved their lives.

A man of God dislikes skateboarders? A man devoted to the bible, a man who, if like my old pastor, is dedicated to teaching us that passing judgement is a moral flaw? He's the one passing the judgement. So we skateboarders are criminals because we decided to escape the pressures of life by doing some tricks and hanging out with friends? Is he putting stereotypes into this? The stereotype to skateboarding is "Oh, they do drugs" No, we don't, those that do are not skateboarders. I know 6 churches whom are consisted of over 85% skateboarders and all of them are the nicest bunch I could ever know.

His dislike will be his demise. You are not a man of God, your a person of judgement and without purity. Go read the bible before you preach, read it 10 more times you hypocrite.

This is so sad. I've spent so much time in that parking lot with Peggy Lee Kennedy & the Peace & Justice Pantry (Food Bank). You wouldn't believe how many skater kids ended up becoming a part of radical Food Not Bombs culture & serving their community (literally serving their local neighborhood community) the organic groceries & health food staples that came out of that pantry every week. The Peace & Justice Pantry run by Peggy Lee Kennedy & Calvin Moss that was evicted has served TONS of groceries to Venice locals for years (including myself when I was working a shitty low paying activist job & my partner was in graduate school) it is really a low down dirty move to take that away. 100's of families depended on those weekly groceries for survival... I can't see how taking food away from poor people is in any way the "Christian" thing to do.
