LA Press Club Awards Finalists Announced: LA Weekly Receives Several Nods
LA Weekly dominated the design category of the Los Angeles Press Club's 53rd SoCal Journalism Awards Finalists, announced today. Staff writer Patrick Range McDonald was named as a Journalist of the Year finalist and saw his piece on parents' school takeover in Compton, "The Parent Trigger," included in the Best News Feature finalists group.

In best Design four out of five packages, including three by art director Darrick Rainey and one by Kelly Lewis, were from the Weekly.
The paper also had three out of five top Entertainment Reviews/Criticism/Column finalists -- from film editor Karina Longworth, theater critic Steven Leigh Morris, and music editor Gustavo Turner.
Other nominations for the Weekly included Beth Barrett ("Dance of the Lemons"), Gene Maddaus ("L.A.'s Light-Rail Fiasco") and Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson ("Culture of Cruelty") for best Investigative/Series. Barrett also got a nod for Best Business piece ("Barry Minkow 2.0").
Staffer Gendy Alimurung was nominated in the Sports category for her profile of Manny Pacquiao.
Star Foreman received a nod for best Feature Photo for her shots of down-tempo electronic musician Flying Lotus.

Patrick O'Connor was nominated in the Editorial Cartoon category.
In Multimedia Package, former Weekly web editor Erin Broadley and this author were nominated for a piece on "Death, Money and Megaraves."
In Weblog Group Wilson, McDonald, Jill Stewart and this author got a nod for our 2010 election night coverage. Food blog (Squid Ink) editor Amy Scattergood was also nominated.
Finally, top Website nominations included the Weekly's, with Broadley and Editor-in-Chief Drex Heikes named specifically. Our sister publication OC Weekly was also nominated in that category.
Congrats to all. Winners will be announced at a gala June 26 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel downtown, with 60 Minutes' Leslie Stahl as co-emcee. (Info).
