Updated at the bottom: Witnesses described the scene before crash as "chaotic." The death of Garton is reported in an update on the next page.

Two motorcycle police officers were "badly hurt" when they collided during a funeral procession for a late Manhattan Beach cop in Torrance today, reports KNX 1070 Newsradio.

The afternoon accident happened at Sepulveda 227th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard boulevards, possibly when one of the riders turned in front of the other, the station reported.

The accident was so bad, it seems, that ...

... family members of one of the cops were flown in via helicopter, according to KNX.

Traffic in the area was reported to be jammed.

Update: City News Service reports that one officer was hospitalized in critical condition and that the other sustained moderate injuries. CNS:

Torrance police said one of the motorcyclists was thrown into oncoming traffic, then hit by another vehicle.

Update No. 2: Authorities say the officers are from the Hawthorne and El Segundo police departments.

The Hawthorne officer is apparently the one who was thrown from his bike.

Torrance Police Department Sgt. Jeremiah Hart told KNX:

The officer from the Hawthorne Police Department was thrown into oncoming traffic and he struck a vehicle that was traveling northbound on Hawthorne in the number one lane
.

There are conflicting reports about the condition of the El Segundo officer. Hart said both officers were in "extremely critical condition.''

Update No. 3: Authorities say 44-year-old Andrew Garton, the Hawthorne officer, died of his injuries this afternoon at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

ABC7 reported that the L.A. County Sheriff's Department helicoptered his wife and two children to the hospital.

The El Segundo cop was said to have sustained a broken leg. He was ID'd as Sgt. Rex Fowler.

The procession was for Manhattan Beach police Officer Mark Vasquez, who recently died of cancer.

A witness told ABC7 that the two motorcycle officers appeared to be going 80 miles and hour and "leapfrogging" each other while passing the slow moving procession when the accident happened.

Update No. 4: Witnesses told the Daily Breeze that the procession was "chaotic" before the crash. The Breeze:

Several witnesses described the procession as disorganized and chaotic as it wound through the South Bay. Suzanne Scott, who had known Vasquez from the time they were in elementary school and attended the funeral, said she was in a minor four-vehicle collision as the procession made its way through Manhattan Beach.

After the accident near Manhattan Beach and Aviation Boulevards, Scott was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, where she heard about the Hawthorne Boulevard crash.

"It was chaotic," Scott said. "There were just so many people."

Like I give a crap about some dead pig. So what if he had a family? What about the families of innocent people killed by pigs? I sure as hell ain't going to cry over the death of some soulless coward cop. One less pig off the streets, a GOOD thing I say. You conservatards actually believe cops are "honest" people? Wow, sucks for you.

You're right, teenage girls are stupid.  Andrew Scott Garton was a loving husband, devoted father and all around wonderful human being.  Everyday he worked his beat to keep the rest of us safe from dilinquents like you.  I pray that you never have to feel the loss our family and dear friends are feeling right now.  Sarah, your right they were leap frogging however this is standard practice and was not putting other citizens in danger.  These officers dedicate their lives to protect us all everyday.  I beg you to not post horrible things like this as our family is in great pain.

Wow, you two commenters are disgusting. They deserve it? That's right, the cops that risk their lives for us daily and protect citizens deserve to die...Wow, talk about heartless people. YOU are the ones that are pigs. Grow up.

someone stole a bunch of shit from me and a local cop had the crime scene folks come and dust etc etc...cool as hell, totally above and beyond, great guy.  Wish him the best.

Less than 2 weeks ago someone shot at me in my car over, literally, nothing...Phoenix PD pulled over a similar car and said, ewps, sorry not them, gotta run.  That was it.

Cops are people too, however, and this is not really in relation to the article, no one should die like this....I keep seeing more and more cops being abusive of their powers etc.  Feels like the USA is becoming a police state real quick like.  makes me somewhat sick and unfortunately, not very concerned with cops lives.

I reiterate that this is not cool however.  No one deserves to die like this, even if they were acting reckless.

I'm sorry but yeah if they were going 80mph & leap frogging ... during a funeral? ... yeah they deserve it. Were they "Abiding the Law?" ...  NO ...  heck they weren't even showing "Respect." ...  & with their reckless driving, they were "Endangering Citizens" not protecting them.

"IM GLAD IM NOT A COP ANYMORE"

The rest of us americans are glad you are not a cop anymore, too.

"I CAN GO OVER THERE AND SHOW YOU WHAT A U.S MARINE IS ALL ABOUT"

No, you can come HERE and try to beat the shit out of me so I can show you what 14 years of Kung Fu and a total disregard for a loud mouthed, obnoxious pig is all about.

"HE WAS A GREAT MAN"

If he was a great man he would not have been showing disrespect in a funeral progression and would still be alive today. And, if he was a great man he would have amounted to more than being a cop, a taco bender, a garbage man, a crack head or a criminal. He would have been a good leader to the people instead of a burden to the people or a corporate tool used to keep the people down.
