Electric Daisy Carnival Sees Two More Possibly Ecstasy Related Deaths Connected to its Dallas Parties

Updated with revised statement from EDC's promoters, at the bottom.

Two more deaths have been possibly linked to Electric Daisy Carnival, the L.A.-bred rave that has been under fire following the death of 15-year-old Sasha Rodriguez at the Los Angeles party last year and subsequent demise of a 19-year-old attendee at the Dallas edition last weekend.

Jesse Morales and Kyle Raymond Haigis, both 22, are said to have died after taking ecstasy and attending EDC Dallas last year and this year, respectively.

While our sister publication Dallas Observer just posted a story stating the family of Morales has come forward to say he died after taking ecstasy and attending last year's Electric Daisy Carnival rave in Dallas, the Dallas Morning News is reporting there might be another death connected to last weekend's event. The DMN:

Authorities suspect a 22-year-old man likely ingested drugs at a Fair Park rave before he ran onto U.S. 75 near Sherman and was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer Sunday morning.

Kyle Raymond Haigis was killed in the accident not long after the Electric Daisy Carnival in Dallas was shut down by police early Sunday morning. Haigis was a passenger in a vehicle with a friend and began acting belligerent, apparently as a reaction to drugs he had taken, police said.

His friend told the police Haigis the man took ecstasy.

A spokeswoman for the L.A.-based promoter, Insomniac Events, told us:

Insomniac was only recently informed of this unfortunate accident. Since the details and facts surrounding the accident are extremely scarce, we reached out to local authorities to find out what actually occurred. However, at this time, we do not believe that it is related to the event.

Meanwhile the story of 22-year-old Jesse Morales would suggest yet another ecstasy related death could be connected to EDC -- this one from last year's party. According to the Observer:

Family members say Morales, a native of Garden City, Kansas, and a student at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, was taken to Baylor University Medical Center after he was found unconscious and separated from his friends at last year's Electric Daisy Carnival in Dallas.

According to his family, Morales left his friends, overheated and in search of water. When his friends finally found him at the end of the night, he was unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital, initially checking in with a body temperature of 107 degrees. He never regained consciousness.

The spokeswoman for Insomniac told the Weekly:

To the best of my knowledge, Insomniac was never informed about this incident by the family of Jesse Morales or any authority in Dallas. As such, we have no idea what is alleged to have occurred over a year ago. Until we know the facts, we have no reason to believe that it is related to the event.

It can't bode well for Insomniac, which has been under fire for the ecstasy-crazed fans the DJ-driven events attract.

Following last year's death of teen Sasha Rodriguez the organizer vowed that future events would be 18-and-up instead of 16 and older.

Insomniac has promised to beef up security and continue it's "zero tolerance" party toward drugs at its three-day Las Vegas rave which starts Friday.

Just today Insomniac CEO Pasquale Rotella issued a statement saying organizers have their act together and will not tolerate drugs at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway party:

First of all, we will continue our strong 'Zero Tolerance' policy at this year's event. Anyone in possession of, or who attempts to purchase or sell illegal substances, will be turned over to law enforcement.

From our very first planning meetings we have worked closely with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the Clark County Fire Department, University Medical Center, Medic West, CSC, Staff Pro, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and many others to develop a comprehensive security and safety plan to help ensure the safety of our fans to the utmost of our ability. We encourage all of our attendees to act like adults and take care of themselves and their friends to make sure everyone has a fun and safe time.

Rotella moved EDC from L.A.'s publicly run Coliseum to Vegas following the controversy over teen Rodriguez's death. He said recently that he would like the party to return to L.A.

Update: Insomniac's publicist sent us this revised statement on the death of Haigis:

Insomniac was only recently informed of this unfortunate accident. Since the details and facts surrounding the accident are extremely scarce, we reached out to local authorities to find out what actually occurred. Insomniac takes every reasonable precaution to ensure that our fans enjoy our events in a safe and secure environment by working with local police, fire departments, employing undercover officers, using ID scanners and a thorough pat down at the point of entry. While we maintain a zero tolerance policy, it's impossible for us to control individual choices. Our events are for adults who are 18 and over and we expect them to act accordingly.

The way other ppl decide to act has nothing to do with EDC. And why would your friend bbe left there where were you ? Edc is an 18 + event why would there be children your only a child if you can't control your actions so maybe your friend shoulda had better 'friends' than ones like you that really didn't give a shit about her . &your 'friend' shoulda watched wtf she was doing because there's always 2sides to every story ! I could've gotten raped but guess what I didn't let myself ! Stop being so fucking ignorant ppl! Edc doesn't tell you oh hey here 10 pills pop them go get fucked and run off and fucking dehydrate we will let you die ! I can't believe ignorant ppl like YOU have a right to say shit .

If you have suffered any type of injury as result of an accident in a bar, club and that was not your fault, then you should seek the services of personal injury solicitor so that they can advise you and start collecting the necessary evidence you need to support you for personal injury compensation. pub fall injury compensation

this is the most pathetic attempt at a "news story" i have ever read.

2 deaths out of the hundred thousand+ event patrons, *might* *fractionally* be related to the event?the "journalist" of this pathetic garbage, Dennis Romero, needs a swift hard kick in the nutts& an early retirement.

please.

ecstasy use is a part of the rave scene and will never fully be removed. Don't get me wrong; Kids these days take drugs very carelessly such as, do not keep hydrated, overdose, do not research pills taken, and just do not know there bodies. insomniacs and las vegas are doing the best they can keeping the people safe either sober or under the influence. they are also trying to cut all random drug sales in there event or at nearby hotels to prevent the sales of impure product to make a few bucks. research your pills, don't buy from random people, know your body, and if you let yourself feel thirsty and parched your already long past dehydrated. Id rather be at an event with tons of security and healthcare on standby then at an underground rave where the chances of getting any medical attention are slim to none

200,000 plus  people go to this event and one dies wow thats actually not a bad number compared to a town that may have a population of 200,000 and only one person dies in a day  thats a great day in that town only one death think about it combine all these events and you have over 600,000 now theres 3 deaths put a town together with 600,000 will there only be 3 deaths in 3 days I think not . This article does not take into account the law of average that people die every day. Im sure more people died this morning going to church in car accidents than at this event so whats all the fuss about

Oh boy are you mistaken...every life that is lost effects many loved ones that are left behind.  When you decide to grow up maybe you will feel more compassion.  When a young adult decides to take a street drug and they die...it's the worst waste of life.  Why do you need to dance around on drugs?  Maybe something else is missing in your life?

I support usage as long as it's responsible, but insomniac needs to do better with "preventing" and zero tolerance. I had drugs on me and I was told my pocket search was optional. I also caught someone in the process of slipping something into my drink. While those who died were probably at their own fault, there are also people who go around and dose people unknowingly which I don't feel is okay for any music festival, electric dance "rave" or not.

You must have received some special treatment, because everyone else attending EDC had to wait in lines to get security pat downs before they could enter.

Let's say over the past 18 years insomniac has had about 2 million people attend their events, that means every event they have ever hosted. As far as I know there has been 4 people that have ever died AT these events (one last year, one this year, because the driving while intoxicated was not the events fault, and then a couple that were a while ago) so thats a  1:500,000 chance that you die at one of these events. in 2000, the year with the highest record of shark attacks, there were only 79 attacks* total worldwide.  Meanwhile, the International World Games report estimated there are about 20 million recreation surfers worldwide. that makes the chances 1: 253,164.So technically there is more of a chance you could get killed on a surf board. But not everyone surfs. BUT everyone does drive...Chance of dying from a car accident: 1 in 18,585

@Jim_Reiss yes those odds make sense, but i however, knew one of those deaths so please tell me the odds in that? One of those deaths devestaded a town of over 25,000 people. So for the 4 deaths reported, 25,000 + people were left without a brother, cousin, friend, neighbor, classmate or even a friendly face at a local function. Can u put a # on that?! I didnt think so.

Here we go again media blaming and pointing fingers and make the EDM scene look bad, when it was the people who died fault because it was there decision to do so and paid the ultimate price. I've been going to these events for the past 12yrs+ and have never done a drug and that was my decision not too. Its just dumb people that decide that they have to get messed up to enjoy events like this. There have been deaths at other types of events like rock concerts but you don't see the media blowing that out of the water. I'm from Austin, Tx and we have big music events like Austin City Limits Music Festival and SXSW and we have the same type of situations like alcohol, heat, and drug related incidents and you don't see that being blown out of the water by the media. Most older generation/media when they hear "Rave" = Drugs which is a bunch of BS stereotyping the EDM(Electric Dance Music) community. So I guess I can call any type of Music related events Rock,Country,Rap,Oldies,Classic Rock, etc. = Drugs also because the media calling the EDM community = drugs.  So F-you Media.....!

BadData

To be fair, I'd say a much higher percentage of people at EDM events are on psychoactive drugs than at other musical events.

To be fair, not many EDM events take place throughout the year, and they dont go on a long as they used to. I  heard this one went on till 2. If people have such a short time to take a drug which affects them 6+hours, someones bound to take too much in too short a timeframe

you must not live in California cuz we have EDM events all year long, in fact every weekend and some weekdays there are several EDM events gong on all year every year.

is that a bad thing?

the article below (written on TIMES) shows that science is clearly starting to recognize that these 'illegal psychoactive drugs' that the kids are taking aren't actually so bad after all. hallucinogens like shrooms and acid are in the article below described as 'spiritual' and 'beneficial' at the right dose. MDMA, an empathogenic drug (inducing EMPATHY), was used for therapy until a misguided study (funded by the gov't) claimed that it was bad (when the study was actually testing meth amphetamine, not MDMA) and prohibited it. marijuana, as we all know by now, has healing properties - no wonder the pharmaceutical industry created MARINOL. ketamine is proven to help with depression, more effectively than prozac. i'm not gonna site everything here, but if you're curious research it for yourself and see.

http://healthland.time.com/201...

the real bullshit/irony is the prevalance and general acceptance of PHARMACEUTICAL drugs that everyone takes, and thinks is ok. you gotta wonder, are the pharmaceutical lobbyists working to keep the 'illegal' drugs illegal so that they can keep making making with their legal poison?

of course, the key to taking these 'psychoactive drugs' is always dosage. isn't it a natural law that pertains to anything? -- that too much of anything is bad...

i have personal experience with the evils of pharmaceutical drugs. a while back, my husband had depression, and like other regular folks he was told to take his 'medication'. the medication didn't do sh*t. if anything, it masked the real issues and prolonged the problem.

then - he took MDMA for the first time, and  had the most extremely spiritual experience, and to quote him, "i gained so much from it. i looked within myself, and found so much of the answers to the questions that loomed in my head forever...it was forgiving, kind, and empowering. i never went back to depression, and since that day i never felt bored ever again." and no, he is not addicted to MDMA whatsoever.

no matter what, your life is your choice. choosing to experiment with mind-altering drugs is a choice, a responsibility, and a gift from the gods. you don't have to do it, but why judge people who do?

"those who say, don't know. those who know, don't say"

Ignore the article, you should see the obvious biased tone he uses in his article about cannabis legalization....The reason why people die from extacy use is either because they  didnt take pills containing MDMA rather some other shit, and because people arent thought responsible use. In the Netherlands people can get their pills tested for free by the government, and theyr told how much of the pill they should take. This has led to a significant increase in the quality of extacy pills there. Most of them contain 100% MDMA, but are significantly stronger, but thats where the clinics come in to teach responsible use and prevent deaths. Drug use is and always has been a health issue not a criminal issue. The publisher of this article should not be setting the tone that drug users are below him!

Why?  Does it hurt your little feelings when someone tries to deny you drugs?  Dude...we aren't in the Netherlands.  Evolve already please!

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, PennyJump.com
