New York Legalizes Gay Marriage, LGBT Activists in California Respond

211512_889735602_6485728_n.jpg
On Friday night, June 24, the New York State Senate passed a bill that legalizes gay marriage in the Empire State. Governor Andrew Cuomo quickly signed it into law, which will go into effect in 30 days. LGBT activists in California and elsewhere quickly responded to the news.

"We are beginning to see the dark walls of discrimination crumble," said Chad Griffin, co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the Los Angeles-based organization that's spearheading the federal Proposition 8 lawsuit.

"Today, we're celebrating Pride with a bit more dignity and a bit more equality," said Robin McGehee, director of Get Equal, a Fresno-based gay rights group, "but tomorrow, we have more work to do. We hope you're up for it, because we definitely are!"

"The fight for marriage equality has been an ongoing battle," said California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, who, as the mayor of San Francisco, allowed same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses in that city in 2004, "but one I believe we should never stop fighting."

He continued, "On this historic day, we honor all the same-sex families in New York who now have an opportunity to participate in something many of us take for granted: to have their commitment and love recognized by the state they live in.

"But at the end of the day, this fight isn't just about the actual rights that come with marriage, this fight is about achieving the dignity that comes with being legitimately recognized as full and complete citizens."

Richard Socarides, president of Equality Matters, a Washington D.C.-based gay rights group, said, "This is an important, historic victory. It shows that bipartisan consensus is possible when there is strong political leadership and people of good faith on both sides who are willing to listen and learn.

"Combined with last year's repeal of don't ask, don't tell, the message is clear: the end of government-sanctioned gay discrimination is near. It is a triumph of basic fairness, for individual liberties and for all loving and committed New York families."

Stuart Gaffney, media director of Marriage Equality USA, said: "New York legislators have reached across the aisle so that loving, committed same-sex couples can walk down the aisle and finally live their happily ever after. We look forward to the day when Proposition 8 is struck down for good, so that we can truly have marriage equality from sea to shining sea."

To all concerned about the Greg Kelly rape case, you areautomatically doubting the victim without any proof whatsoever about whether ornot she is telling the truth, I know for a fact that Commissioner Kelly and hisNYPD don't always follow through with serious cases that include high profilecelebrity, so instead of judging the victims without true facts, let’s justwait and see what happens and whether or not Commissioner Kelly and DA Vancewill do the right thing and do a though investigation in to CommissionerKelly's son involvement.

I don't think she is making up anything, I just think shewas scared because Greg Kelly is the Commissioner of the NYPD son and sheprobably thought no one would believe because of that, I know all too well whatit's like not to have anyone believe you when you are attacked, because I toowent through a similar experience and everyone refused to do the right thingand do a proper investigation in my situation, so what I am saying is I standbythe victim until otherwise proving and all of you should do the same.

These are my own personal opinions and beliefs based on whatI had experienced myself.

Thank You.

To all concerned:

This recent Earth Quake here in New York City on August 22nd,2011 was nothing compared to what I had experienced in Whittier California, in1986/ 1987.

The California onewas a lot worse, where the four story apartment that I was staying in lost thewalls on the fourth, third and first floors, the second floor where both mylover at the time, lost three of those four walls, but we didn't get hurt orreceived any serious damage or loss of anything, but we did have to evacuatethe building in case of collapse and we ended up staying in a hotel.

I was also in San Diego California when the San Diego PadresStadium was hit with another Earth Quake sometime in 1994, if I remembercorrectly.

We were only on vacation in California for a couple ofmonths and rented this brand new apartment that no one else had used except uswhen the Earth Quake had hit that part of California.

We were a little shaken up, since both my lover at the timeand I had never been in an Earth Quake before and didn't know what to expect.

You do get a little dizzy when the Earth Quake hits, I don’tknow if everyone experience dizziness, but I sure did, sooner or later, NewYork City is going to either get a serious Earth Quake of disastrous efforts ora serious hurricane that will cause a lot of structural damage and earth, NewYork City presently is not ready for anything of that high magnitude despitewhat they claim.

Thank You.

Re: City PushesBack on Deport Ruling, illegal but only when proven guilty:

Same Sex MarriageBill:

In response to your article.

I would like to start off by saying that I have knownCouncilmember Daniel Dromm for many years and I respect him for the hard workhe is doing for his community and Constituents, but I don’t always agree withsome of his ideas and policies.

For instance there are two subjects that I am stronglyopposed to.

One is the recent passing of the same sex marriage bill, although I am an openly Gay Man, I don’t support Same Sex Gay Marriage, CivilUnions and Gay Adoptions, I am a vocal person and have spoken out on this issuemany of times.

Here why I don’t support it, I strongly believe that it willdestroy the very foundation of what marriage is really supposed to be, such asrearing children, I was brought up the belief that marriage is between a manand women only with no exceptions.

I strongly believe that this sham of a Gay Marriage same sexbill will destroy civilizations as we know.

After the same sex gay marriage bill was passed, everyoneincluding Gay Puppets from some off Broadway show was able to get married, Ifound that to be a total disgrace and a lack of respect for marriage, it willalso leave open the door for other groups to want to take advantage of thisrecently passed Same Sex Marriage bill such as illegal Immigrants being able tomarriage same sex partners to gain legal status towards citizenship and then divorcingtheir partners and stealing their hard-earned monies., then you will havebigamist wanting to have more than one partners, then you will have men marringboys and women marring girls, this will ultimately cause more harm than good, Ido believe that we do need protective rights against discrimination, butforcing this Same Sex marriage bill down people throats is not the way to go,it will cause more harm than good and it will get people to hate gays andLesbians even more and some will even go out to hurt or even worse kill Gaypeople, this has been proven time and time again.

The only reason that the elective officials passed this shamof a same sex marriage bill in the first place is not because they care aboutGay people, but only to raise the much needed revenue that the gay marriagebill will generate, I can see that sooner or later, lawyers will be lining upfor divorce cases, there are many gay people who agree with me about this shamof a gay marriage bill, but very few have the guts that I do to publicly speakout on it.

Now for my views on Illegal Immigrants, I would like tostart off by saying that I am not a racist or a bigot or anti-immigrants; I amjust expressing my own opinions and beliefs as I see it.

First I would like to start off by saying I think it’s atotal disgrace and lack of respect for the legalized citizens that were born inthis country known as the United States of America and our founding fathersmust be turning over in their grave with the way this country in heading.

Although some illegal immigrants are very good, hardworking peoplein search of a better life, I do not believe that we should reward knowncriminals for breaking our laws and then telling legalized citizens andAmerican born citizens to follow the letter of the laws, while looking theother way when it comes to illegal Immigrants, no one group should be above anyother, if you are going to pass laws then make them fair for everyone, if yougive preferential treatment to only one group, then you cause people to becomeracists and bigots.

Illegal Immigrants sneak In to this country illegally, stealjobs from hardworking Americans and keeping the salaries low by appeasingcorporate America, don’t pay their fair share of taxes or don’t pay taxes atall, steal people’s identities, sell stolen items, share a one bedroomapartment with 10 or more people, bleed our medical system dry by havingmultiple babies and multiple surgeries and feel a sense of entitlement becausethey are from a third world country where their government does nothing forthem and some of them are nasty, filthy, disgusting people who are rude and don’teven make an effort to get along with Americans, then they can’t understand whyso many Americans don’t like them , these are some of the things that I havepersonally seen or even experienced  on adaily basis.

If an American born or legalized citizen pulled half of thisstuff, they would be thrown in jail faster than you could blink your eyes.

The only reason why elective officials are so strong onallowing illegal immigrants to become citizens is because they want the votes, the campaign donations and a photo-op, they really don’t care about the consequencesof their actions and what an impact it will have on the future generations andthe world as we know it, they are single handling destroying the world as weknow it and this great planet known as Earth, it is not the responsibility ofthe United States of American to be the savior of the world’s problems, do youthink that the other countries that these illegal immigrants are from wouldallow American citizens to get away with being illegal in their countries, Ithink not and I am so sure that they wouldn’t hesitate to deport us in aninstance.

Where does the elective officials have the rights to passlaws without getting approval from the voting public, last time I checked, theUnited States of America was a democracy country, not a communist country, anybills and laws should first be brought in front of all the illegalized votersand have an amendments before they are passed, when the voting publicunderstands the bills and laws that the elective officials want to pass anddecides to vote on a particular bill or law, then and only then should it bepassed.

We have to wake up and smell the coffee; did we notunderstand that when we had September 11, 2001, when so many of our people werekilled in the Twin Towers, The Pentagon and in the field in Shanksford?

If we allow the stream of illegal immigrants to continue toflood this country, we would undoubtedly have another disaster far worse thanSeptember 11, 2001.

These are my personal beliefs and opinions and no one has toagree with me, but I see a lot more things going on than the average persondoes on a daily basis.

Thank You.

Sincerely,

Paul Priore

Re: The MTAraising the bridge and tunnel fares and the transit and buses:

I think it’s a total disgrace that they would consider doingthat since there are many people without jobs, in foreclosure and starving.

This just gives the MTA and others the right to steal moremoney from hardworking people and eventually will force the middle class andthe poor to move out of New York City and New York State.

When is this madness going to end, and when are thesethieving Elective Officials and Management of these agencies going to stopgauging the hardworking people.

Something needs to be done about it and fast, why do theybother having public forums, if they are bent on making there decisions to rippeople off by raising the fares anyway?

Don’t they understand that we are in a global recession orglobal depression?

These are own personal opinions and beliefs.

Thank You.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. The one thing everyone seems to ignore is that people who think that they have a right to dictate and regulate, and limit others' sex lives, intimacy, and relations, are sick in the head and have control issues... Either marriage and the right to express one's sexuality are going to be rights enjoyed by all, or a privilege reserved for heterosexuals. So they want to get married.... Why the hell would someone really care unless they're a dogmatic hate monger?

Megan12543

humans don't know what love is.  these people are suddenly getting married, because a law was passed?  the only thing people know the definition of, is rebellion for its own sake.  if the situation was reversed, they would not get married. if that isn't the definition of a meaningless existence, nothing is. it's easy to make people fall off a cliff.  all you have to do is use reverse psychology.  nobody thinks for themselves.  solomon was right.  people are just a vain walk in the park.  ing lot.

Hi Paul,

The fact of the matter is, marriage is not merely a God-given right or a way to bring up children--your argument, by the way, doesn't take into account heterosexual single mothers and fathers.

In the United States, marriage comes with definite economic benefits that are too long to list, and that's where the discrimination comes in--gays and lesbians are barred from many of those benefits.

So you can either get government out of the marriage business or give gays and lesbians those same rights. I doubt politicians -- or religious institutions and straight couples, for that matter -- will want to undo those economic benefits, so that leaves you with one choice: full marriage equality.

And for those gay folks who don't like marriage, they don't have to get married. But shouldn't the option, with all of its legal and economic benefits provided by government, be there?

While I understand that there are gay folks and activists who believe the gay rights movement has focused too much on legalizing marriage, possibly to the detriment of other issues, it should be remembered that the fight over marriage was mainly brought to us first.

Right-wing and fundamentalist religion groups were using gay marriage bans as a way to stop our overall progress in getting full equality. It became a fight that needed to be fought by us. So here we are.

As well as the economic benefits, there have been medical studies that strongly suggest that having a lifelong partner in marriage also has real health and psychological benefits. So it's a health issue as well as a human rights one.

Take care,Patrick Range McDonald,LA Weekly

Don't confuse "LGBT activists" with "Same Sex Marriage activists."

Not all queers think or support that legalizing gay marriage is really "equality."  Gay marriage just allows gays to get married.  This overuse of "equality" (and further, how legal marriage validates love... is overblown.  Single gays are as SOL as single heteros in terms of cashing in on the 1300 benefits afforded only to married people.  Marriage discriminates and no one should be forced into State-sanctioned marriage to get those benefits.

Gay marriage is not true equality.

Thanks for the CA reaction. Great coverage in NY Times, huge headline and they picked a photo featuring an attractive young woman in front of the Stonewall Inn - the most positive image they could run. Photos they pick often show their attitude. Remember when the news outlets always picked the worst looking image they could?

The entire gamut of the wedding industry from schmaltzy singers to bachelor party x-rated cake bakers - must be dancing in the streets. The whole industry has seen hard times as people opted for budget weddings or waited to tie the knot at all, in the hard times. NY has always had better business sense than Ca.
