Electric Daisy Carnival Promoter Pasquale Rotella Wants Another Shot at Hosting Massive Parties at the L.A. Coliseum

One tragic death, about 60 arrests, and 200-plus medical emergencies couldn't really pry the massive rave called Electric Daisy Carnival from its home base at the publicly owned L.A. Coliseum.

But when it was revealed that the rave's promoter allegedly paid a coliseum official to work on the side for him, even as that official lobbied to keep the raves going on public land, political support for the multi-million dollar parties eroded. And EDC headed to Las Vegas for a three-day version June 24.

But EDC honcho Pasquale Rotella says the party's not over. He wants to come back.

Rotella, who puts on the shows under his promotion company Insomniac Events, told the Los Angeles Business Journal this week (print only):

I would love nothing more than to have our events return to the coliseum in the future.

EDC ravers.

Indeed, there's a lot of money to be made. Insomniac claims a $42 million impact on the USC-area economy during EDC weekend. Last year's party drew slightly more than 160,000 revelers, police told the Weekly.

Rotella says the Vegas event could attract as many as 100,000 per day for three days.

The Business Journal estimates that tickets for the Vegas version could bring as much as $20 million, with production costs running about $12 to $15 million.

This even as he has signed on for five years of EDCs in Vegas. When we wrote that he was leaving L.A. for Vegas long-term, Rotella corrected us. No, he said, Vegas is just another extension of his EDC parties, which also take place in Denver, Dallas, Puerto Rico and Orlando, Florida.

Rotella told the Business Journal that "we're still based in Los Angeles, and our main market is California."

A Business Journal reader poll asking readers if the coliseum "should allow raves again" was running 58 percent "no" to 41 percent "yes."

"Heart disease is America’s No 1 killer, taking one life every 35 seconds. Cancer causes one death every 56 seconds." So Seriously Lump off! ONE DEATH!? Suck my dick! More over Suck all of our dicks EDC haters! Like Scott, Bdonovan, And That "Guest"!! Stop Hating! Cause More People Die In America In One Fucking Day Than At Raves Such As EDC!! EDC Is a festival That people enjoy and love it for the music and the loving people around them! They're Not Bad AT ALL!! Insomniac is way bigger then GO Ventures. And Scott if you really knew how much money those promoters were making it would shut your mouth right up. EDC in Vegas alone brings in over 5 Million and that's a low estimate. and there is nothing fake about any of the festivals, you must not get invited to many party's or you might know that there are allot of people who go to EDM events just for the music i know that i do I love edm, Electro house is the ISH! and so is trance and hard dance. shit give me some Happy hardcore and Ill stomp it out~ I love EDM! the drugs are just what the media focuses on

As for as the reading post, it should of been a poll all los angeles county residents not just readers to get an accurate poll. If it was to all L.Aresidents, then it should of been promoted well enough for to know about the poll taking place, if raves should return to L.A. I think they should, I like going and enjoying the music!

It's cool how rotella is down with LA... I'm from LA and I say EDC or any Insomniac event belongs here with us, were Insomniac Started... So hopefully edc comes back to us here in LA... Ps everyones Responsible for there own life... Not Insomniac...

Considering the amount of people at this event... it went pretty smooth.  Not to mention, most of these teens are making the choice to take drugs in the first place. Its sad yes, but at the same time... this guy was 19 and he is responsible for himself.  I sure hope people stop trash talking EDC and realize this shit can happen anywhere to ANYONE @ ANYTIME!

yet another 15 year old died last night at EDC Dallas.

Andrew W.
Andrew W.

It wasn't a 15 year old. Do an ounce of research before you say something like that.

And how does it make any sense at all to blame the party itself for the actions of an individual? It's dreadful, granted, but these festivals are organized to showcase art and music. It just so happens that electronic music has more often than not been associated, although not by any NECESSARY means, with intoxication and the consumption of drugs (all of which can be similarly seen in ANY OTHER art-music-movement/youth culture scenes). These events aren't evil, cult gatherings orchestrated to take your children away from you. They're absolutely, indisputably safe in nature, UNTIL you add the element of personal decision and the inability to regulate everyone's actions.

It's honestly that simple. It's, I suppose, difficult to see for some people because they only acknowledge the sensationalized reality that there are in fact a lot of people out there making stupid decisions. But whose fault is that? The artist's who makes music people can dance to? Or the lack of educated young people who are clearly out of the realm of a parent's control?

You can't rally a witch hunt to demonize some sort of youth culture when the culture itself isn't to blame but rather the poor decisions of some uneducated young people. I mean you can, but you'd be a barbaric dick.

Well put, Andrew. They want to shut down raves because 2 people died? By that logic we should remove all the freeways in the country so people can't kill themselves driving on them. It's easy for someone to criticize and demonize something that has no value to them, but what about those who genuinely and innocently enjoy electronic music? Those are the real victims here. A "rave" is a concert, nothing more, but as soon as people hear "rave" they hear "drugs" all thanks to biased, sensationalist journalism. Anyways, to end the rant, I really do hope EDC comes back to the Coliseum with an 18+ age restriction. If you're old enough to serve, I think you're old enough to kill yourself with drugs. :P

Still can't stop talking about EDC, eh Dennis? Anything to keep the limelight on our scene a little bit longer, right? Biased journalism at its finest.

Well considering that people keep dying, people will continue to talk about Electric Death Carnival. I'm glad they banned disgusting event from LA.

ROFLCopter
ROFLCopter

People don't "keep dying". It's media sensationalism highlighting the very rare (none the less, very tragic) death that occurs from time to time. And sadly your narrow point of view will never allow you see the event for what it truly is....a music festival for EDM enthusiasts. Just because you have different tastes and it doesn't appeal to you means that there's something wrong with it. Regardless of how people entertain themselves, there are always morons who party way too hard and end up endangering themselves or others. How many people each year are involved in drunk driving accidents from having one too many beers @ the local night club or bar? Stop focusing on the negative stigma that is associated with these types of events and then blowing it up even further when someone loses their life. You act like we WANT for this to happen, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Electric Daisy rave has left Los Angeles THANK GOD!!! after its disastrous show at the Coliseum and after many years trailing behind the other big time promoter, Reza/Go Ventures; the L.A. band of promoters (that are too old to be raving) that stages the event hopes to return when the payoff to the city are accepted and councilmen received their contributions for their next campaign to stay as elected city officials.Who the fuck wants all this media attention? You're just waiting for the heat to come down? Make that money and stfu!

In no way has Insomniac Productions been trailing Go Ventures.

Ripkurl

GO Ventures are the good guys.  They are the real old school heads keeping the real massive scene alive. Pasquale was riding their coattail the whole time. In  2007 Greedy Power grab known as EDC caused a unexpected but not unwelcome of new less educated attendees. The fallowing beyond wonderland and Monster suffered as a consequence. The following year to pre EDC 2010 Insomniac never change and GO Ventures adapted.    No matter what GO Ventures always ran a safer event. The real bad guys are the drug makers and dealers not the promoters.

Nightmare

you all realize that both insomniac and go ventures appeal to different crowds right??

Go Ventures and Reza are more of the old school and adult EDM lovers, and most of the parties thrown by Reza have that more adult and old school vibe to them.. Whereas Insomniac just wants anyone and everyone, and insomniac parties just have that new age vibe and can anyone here deny that the younger kids love it??

its not a matter of riding coattails or anything like that, its simply a New School Vs. Old school, young vs. old, etc etc.

To compare the two is just silly, just because they are massive companies doesn't really mean shit when broken down except that they both are successful in their ways of throwing events.

JJ

disastrous? howso? Most everyone had a great time...Just because one person died? You do realize someone has died every year at monster massive by GO ventures for a while... my friend died there in 2008.And "trailing behind" GO ventures? their parties have not been as successful as Insomniac lately. I'm not saying they're bad at all, but Love Fest last year was pretty empty..I don't see a problem with these parties. If people die, maybe they shouldn't put so many drugs in their bodies.

An interview with Business Journal a local paper to discuss his plans to rule the raves? Reminded me of Steve Rubell talking about how much money he made before they busted his ass. LAPD and city officials are taken care of with contributions but federal agencies should have interest If they really want to know what goes on with the production and follow the money to see what it ends up.

Scott Stepp

These promoters need to find a new way to make money cause there's nothing but trouble with these fake festivals attended by drug fueled chunks of human turd.

Mark Trance

Scott, What a nasty and inhuman position to take. You are passing judgment on people you have no knowledge of. You, and those like you, with your arrogant and dismissive attitude are a real problem for the rest of us living, breathing, caring human beings. Please practice birth control and do not reproduce. For the love of God, let your obvious disdain for others and your bitter antihuman attitude pass away from this world. We grow weary of you...

These stereotypes are absurd. Did you not read that there are 100,000 people in attendance? 100,000 people! That is like the city of Richmond. Now, take a typical concert by any Rock group and compare. You will see the same issues arising. Take any city of that size and you will find the same issues arising. Based on your logic, you should shut down a city if someone dies from drugs. I personally think that they do an excellent job at curbing disaster when you have that many people gathering for an event. Remember Woodstock. I guess that should have never happened either? If you think that way, please move to North Korea. Here in America we like to enjoy our freedoms with loud music and dancing if you don't mind.

Scott! Really?!?

Ed

I try and attend as many of these events, along with EDM (electronic dance music) shows at clubs, as I can. I do not drink or put any drugs in my system, I simply enjoy the melodies and beats of house and trance music. I do realize I'm part of the minority when it comes to being sober at these events, but I do not think you should apply that stereotype to everyone who likes EDM and attends such events.

Nightmare

nicely said, i agree.

i am one of those that also goes to events sober. ^_^
