Yo! Venice
Shooting at Penmar Park
Reporting by Dennis Romero.

Update: "Junior Diaz and Alan Mateo, Venice High Seniors, Murdered at Penmar Park One Day Before Graduation."

Updated after the jump: An LAPD captain says another victim has died -- bringing the death toll to two. He says nine casings from a 9mm handgun have been recovered from the scene, and that the shooting victims, who looked like they were in their early 20s, had just graduated from an adult school. He believes the shooting was gang-related. A girls' softball game was set to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Originally posted at 5 p.m.

Twitter is abuzz with reports of a multiple-victim shooting in Penmar Park, located at the northeast end of Venice. According to reports, at least one of the victims has been declared dead. ABC LA identifies the suspected shooter as a Latino man wearing a light-brown T-shirt.

The L.A. City Fire Department placed the shooting at 1311 East Lake Street around 4:10 p.m. Fire officials report that, aside from the fatality, at least two more injured people have been transported to a hospital, but their condition is unknown. All the victims are said to be Latino.

Marymount High School girls' softball coach Dave Clark, whose team was set to play its first double-header of the summer league this afternoon, tells the Weekly that people were yelling "Get down, get down" upon hearing the gunfire -- at least six shots.

He says another female coach on the field wrapped her jacket around one victim's leg, then gave CPR to the victim who would soon be declared dead for 10 to 15 minutes next to the bleachers.

He says the man's eyes were open, but he wasn't moving.

The bleachers where softball parents were sitting when the shooting occurred.
One of the shots actually came near the bleachers where they were playing softball, according to Clark. And an umpire claims he saw one of the victims run toward the field before hiding behind a tree.

Another witness saw a VW vehicle leave the scene -- and was able to take down its license-plate number for officers -- but wasn't sure if it was involved in the crime.

In the '80s and early '90s, Penmar Park was a known hangout for members of Venice 13, a violent Latino gang.

Update: LAPD Captain Gary Walters says that "at this time, we believe it's a gang-related shooting by a suspect who walked up and opened fire with a 9mm handgun."

Others at the scene believe a father watching the game -- a potential fourth victim -- may have also been grazed by a bullet, then left on his own for the hospital. Walters confirms that there might have been a bystander hit. [Update: The bystander was not hit by a bullet. And as for the third victim, wounded in the leg, Walters says "he'll be fine."]

The softball game was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. between Marymount and Torrance High School.

According to Walters, the shooting victims had just graduated from an adult day school and were at Penmar Park this afternoon to celebrate. He says investigators have found nine casings from the 9mm, and that the suspect, or suspects, are thought to have escaped in a vehicle.

Far right: the young man who died at the scene.
Update: A witness says he saw the body of the first victim to die, and that it "looked like a teenager."

It's no secret that there's been tension between the Santa Monica 13 and Venice 13 gangs lately -- especially in that area. Walters says, "we're worried about that constantly." However, Santa Monica police Sergeant Richard Lewis tells the Weekly that "we do have gang investigators over there," but that "so far it does not appear to be related to us."

All the gang detectives from the LAPD's Pacific Division were at the scene.

Dear All:I, Elizabeth Mariscal, am the mother of the teenager being falsely accused of the Penmar Park shootings/murders o the afternoon of Wednesday, June 22, 2011.My son, Michael Mariscal, was present at home in Culver City at the time of the shootings/murders, as well as at the time of the news was released to the public.

My roommate and myself were also home with Michael at the time of the shootings/murders.

Despite this fact, the Pacific Division detectives dismissed this information and forcefully raided my home at approximately 9:30 am on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 without a search warrant.

Their reasoning for not having a search warrant was the fact that Michael is currently on probation.

On that note, I then informed the Pacific Division detectives that they could proceed to search through Michael's stuff, but that a search warrant would have to be presented to me prior to searching the rest of the property.

They demanded that we vacate the property so they could continue there search even without the search warrant.

They were adamant that MIchael was not present at home at the time of the shootings/murders even when I insisted that he was.

I recall reading about the shootings/murders on Facebook and turning to my son Michael, giving him a hug and telling him how grateful I was that he was home safe and sound. We also watched the news as the incident was reported. I also held a conversation with my roommate Mark regarding what I had read on Facebook and heard on the news.

I expressed to Detective Keyzer and Detective Corranza that it simply was not possible for Michael to have been at Penmar Park and make it home so quickly because of the distance between the park and our home in Culver City.

They continually insisted that we were wrong and that they knew for sure that Michael committed the shootings/murders.

Michael is not a gang member, but has been maliciously labelled as such because of his older brother; and has been treated as a gang member due to this fact.

The detectives proceeded with the search despite not having a search warrant present.

Once they received the search warrant and affidavit, they only allowed me to view the front page from a distance at approximately 2:30 pm on Tuesday, June 28, 2011. By that time they had already confiscated my laptop computer, used personally and for business, my niece's cell phone as well as several other miscellaneous items.

It was not until 5:30 pm, upon their return to my home, that detectives Keyzer and Carranza presented me with a copy of the property receipt.

During this second visit, they spoke to my roommate Mark, and he told them the same information I did, but still they insisted it was Michael. They then asked to speak to me again and I told them Michael was home all week. He usually accompanies me to my therapy and allergist appointments. They told me Michael is being blamed for the shootings/murders at Penmar Park.

Bottom line is they are wrongfully accusing an innocent person. I have also been informed by a very reliable source that the Santa Monica gang has openly taken responsibility for the shootings/murders at Penmar Park on Wednesday, June 22, 2011.

Please note it is a well-known by the surrounding communities that Santa Monica and Venice gangs are currently feuding with one another.

I would like to offer my deepest and sincerest condolences to the families of the two young men that unfortunately lost their lives in this heinous act of violence.

Let's make sure that justice is served, not allowing an innocent person to be a victim of a wrongful accusation, but rather that the real shooter may be found and prosecuted accordingly.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Mariscal

One of the victims was my cousin. Ur comment was not only ignorant and immature but also hurtful. If you want to be an asshole and post shit like that at the expense of others do it on the shitty ' I have no friends' facebook which I'm sure you probably have.

for every brave comment i wonder if you would be brave to say it to mexican and blacks in venice most of my family grew up in venice since the fiftys and i dont remember anyone saying thing like the one i am reading

White Teacher

Alan was my student last year - I knew him as a fun-loving and kind person who was looking forward to graduating from high school.  I am sick of hearing all of the negative comments directed at Alan, Junior, and other Latino teens from Los Angeles.  Alan was a normal American teenaged boy who liked to joke around and flirt with girls.  Unfortunately to outsiders who judge people not by the "content of their character," but by the color of their skin, Alan will forever be branded as a worthless gangmember.  For the record, though Alan lived in a "gang" area, and knew gang members, he was not in a gang.  The media need to get their information straight.

what a fucking shame,Alan was a great person and had a heart of gold....my sadness overwhelms me...I cant imagine the pain the parents feel...his Dad is the best human being I know...I am so sad....

they want to shoot guns...send all their asses to the Afghanistan.  Let's see how brave and macho they really are.  They're dumb asses are killing their own.  I really hate to hear about stories like this.  My nephew was killed over 11 years ago to senseless violence and my son has been a target as well.  It's sad that our young men can not celebrate life and have to be scared of assholes like this.  Again...send them to the fight in the WAR!!!!

First and foremost let's all remember that these men are sons, grandsons, brothers, cousins etc and they have family mourning over them. They're human beings regardless of what skin color they are. And in respnse to the comments about "killing all the gangmembers" and about how venice was a nice place before all the "wetbacks and niggers started moving in" well let me tell you something, I grew up in Venice just a couple blocks from penmar park and when I was only 13 years old I was chased down by two WHITE bums. So before everyone wants to sit and point fingers at the minorities, let's all take a step back and really look at the picture. Shame on all of you for turning this into a racial stereotype conversation. These two men have mothers that have to bury their sons and will have to go the rest of their lives to never see their "babies" again. As a mother that's something that breaks my heart. No parent ever wants to bury a child. Maybe you all should think about that before you sit on your high horse critiscizing people you DON'T know and let them rest peacefully . R.I.P to the two men and my deepest condolences to the friends and family...

In case you haven't figure it out, politically correct genius, Venice is claimed by the Shorline Crips (niggers) and Venice 13 (wetbacks).  Keep smoking your weed and professing your political correctness.  Until you confront the situation head-on (which you won't because you're a pussy), and call a spade a spade, things will only get worse.  Go ahead and bask in your stupidity and political correctness...fucking pothead!

Oh goodness! Why don't you stop being an assimulationist.! You live in a shadow of your society your not even your own person you an assimulationist! Why are you even writing this on a page where peace should be held for these boys not an argument of whether whites, black or Latinos where in Venice first! In the end it doesn't matter because man was created equal! We all have the same human organs! White women and men are the same as black men and women as well Latino men and women! The only thing that is different is our cover! You have to get over all this assimilation! You racism is the reflection of your arrogance.

its funny how you say pot head as if it were a bad  thing and how you praise your ignorant  white people yet those same idiots are the ones legalizing pot and lets be real not for the "medical care" of people but to pull this lazy country's ass out of debt. you go fuck yourself.

There will always be this kind of confrontation there's no need to think it's gang related just because you hear and she the word LATINOS! you"ll get surprised with what white Americans do and have done but Noooo! They are always thought to be the good people. Grow up people quit stereotyping people like you is what makes this hate racism and confrontations going. As in for these young teenagers I hope you guys are in a better place now. R.I.P

I remember when Venice used to be a nice place to hang out.  Then the niggers and wetbacks started moving in and now look at what it's become.  What a wonderful thing diversity is!

Wow, really?  ! can only assume you are making a stupid and unfunny joke.  Unless you are referring to how much fun it was to hang out in Venice in 1908...  Mind you, I have only lived in Venice since 1973, but i can tell you, that Venice has never been more blissfully boring.  I can only hope that this was a random and aberrant act, and not the start of a violent summer.  I really don't feel like reliving the 80's and early 90's.

these niggers and wetbacks you talking about where there long before the white were.

GottaLoveLA

The white man is who made Venice Beach a nice place.  The niggers and wetbacks are who's made it into a third world ghetto.  Political correctness has no place in reality.

GottaLoveLA

I'm curious Joe90055...what is the rationale behind your thoughts?  I don't force one nigger from a crip set to shoot another nigger from a blood set.  It's tree hugging aplogists like you that cause all the gang murder here  in America.  Rather than holding these scum suckers responsible, you're always making excuses for them.  "Oh, they're a victim of society.  They didn't have good schools to go to because the white man put all the money in their schools.  They were never given a fair chance....yada, yada, yada."  Rather than holding their parents and communities responsible, you make excuses for their degenerate behavior.  You Joe are a fool and an idiot!

All while the ruling class advocates for dog parks instead of youth centers and social justice. Gang violence is not that simple, by LAPD and other ignorant elite standards I'm considered a gang member, cant just "lock them up."

Let's just kill all the gang members. They're useless and cause nothing but harm on all the rest of us. They perpetuate the cycle by leving their kids fatherless while spending quality time in the joint...or dead...Grow up, get a job...plus they're easy to profile. When was the last time you heard breaking news about a white american citizen gunning down 2 other whites in a drive by.

nonofyabees

you are a stereotypical racist fuck who know what theyre talking about. theyre easy to profile? what you say they look like? you dont think whit people join gangs? was not the KKK's just like a gang??? killing gangsters isnt gonna solve anything, it just makes you one of them. Do your research because there are TONS of cases of white murders you ignorant fuck.

Juhbuh

Lock up all the gang members - then sort it out later. This is unacceptable "." - if we can spend this much money on Homeland security, divert some federal funds into Gang prosecution too...LA is a cesspool for gang behavior because its tolerated by the population and LAPD. Like the Mafia in NY they have no right to associate with eachother, if they do lock em up under RICO act. The City and State legislature needs to stop pussyfooting around on this issue, I remember in the late 80's and early 90's when there were portable courtrooms to prosecute all the gang members, the courts ran out of space!
