Vera Michaelson, Dental-School Grad, Shot Dead by Doctor Husband Alex in Valley 'Murder-Suicide'

Police say Vera Michaelson was shot twice in the head by her husband yesterday.
A 32-year-old immigrant from Belarus named Vera Michaelson lay lifeless in her L.A. driveway last night, her dead husband Alex Michaelson, 39, at her side -- and a pistol between them.

The couple had two children, ages 5 and 7, who were staying with relatives in the O.C.

NBC4 reports that Alex put two bullets in his wife's head before turning the gun on himself at their 15045 Sherview Place home in the Sherman Oaks hills. LAPD investigators have found no note so far, but are interviewing family members to determine a possible motive for the murder-suicide. One clue:

Witnesses tell NBC that Alex left work abruptly yesterday, saying he had to take care of an "emergency" situation. When a co-worker came by his Tarzana home around 5 p.m. to make sure he was OK, the couple was already lying dead in the driveway.

Vera and Alex may have been dead since 11 a.m. that morning, when a neighbor said she heard gunshots. From the report:

The NBC4 LA news helicopter revealed a nicely clad man and well dressed woman lying dead in pools of blood in the driveway to a gated Sherview Place home. It appeared a pistol was lying on the ground between the man and woman.

According to Vera's Facebook profile, she recently graduated from Nova Southeastern University's dental school. Before that, it appears she also attended CSU Northridge and a tech college in her home country. Her favorite quotations are "My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely" and "The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes."

Alex is an immigrant as well, originally named Alexandre D. Mihelson; his listing on Health Grades indicates he speaks Russian. He was trained in Moscow and Nevada. Via the South Valley Hospice website:

Dr. Michaelson's added qualifications are pain management, geriatrics and from the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

In 2010, Dr. Michaelson was named Hospice Physician for South Valley Internal Medicine. He gained end-of-life experience from his practice as a Primary Care Medical Director at South Valley Internal Medicine and at several area rehabilitation facilities.

The Michaelsons just moved homes in December 2008 -- choosing a nice, family-sized $300,000 house in the gated Valley community. Update: A reader tells us that's not their home; instead, she says they lived in this $1.5 million five-bedroom at the end of the street.

"i spoke with alex re:troubles with his wife and also know that she told him that she has another husband for 2 years in florida and he would never kill himself and leave his children without parents, the court will never give the rights to a mother like this and im sure he knew that so it was no reason for him to kill himself- somebody killled them both."

This is interesting. Can anyone confirm the statement above about Dr. Alex Michaelson and his wife Vera Michaelson?

I love Dr. Michaelson! He is very professional and has a heart for his patients and staff. When I do my vital rounds in the morning, I see him come in to check on his patients and he always very pleasant to be around. Now I really miss him because he isn't there in the morning. Our work place at Tarzana Hospital isn't the same. I am deeply touched by all this. I feel sooo sad that we lost this wonderful doctor. He's so different from most doctor. He always noticed you. Very friendly and he has a good sense of humour and we the staff in 3rd floor med-surg and the rest of the Tarzana staff members are going to miss him. We're grieving since that day.! Everyone is in shocked! I myself don't believe that this is murder. He loves his wife very much. I used to asked about his family and how his wife is doing in school during the time we're doing charting in the morning. I drove by his office after work and saw a picture of him and his wife Vera and a flower that was left on the ground with a sign posted that the office was close. My deep sympathy and heart goes to his 2 children and families who is in shocked with this tragedy. Dr. Michaelson and Vera...I pray for both of you that you'll find peace wherever God leads you. We're going to always think of you guys at work and we'll miss you! God be with both of you......Only Dr. Michaelson, Vera and God knows what really happened.

There is not a doubt in my mind that THIS IS STAGED... The police have not answered the simple question.. "WHO BENEFITS?"..Dr. M., RAN from his office after a DISTRESS  from home,,,they had JUST moved to a new home...Vera JUST graduated...they had everything going for them...he was so devoted to her...and what???? Nothing about this makes sense...the police need to "FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!"..not look for the fast way to close the case..

This terribly tragic, very sad case prompts many questions. For example, what kind of emergency could have been taking place at thehome? Why wouldn't Dr. Michaelson call 911 for the police or paramedics as soonas he learned about the emergency and before he drove from his office to his home?

I too foundit strange when an LAPD officer interviewed on a TV news report concludedthat Dr. Michaelson was responsible for the crimes, even before the coroner andLAPD started or completed their investigations. The LAPD officer claimed thatthe gun, which was supposedly lying between the two bodies, was registered toDr. Michaelson. Isn't it possible for a third party to use a registered gunowner's gun to kill the gun owner and his wife and make it appear as if the gunowner was responsible for the crimes?

The L.A. County Dept. of Coroner and LAPDknow or will soon know from the forensic evidence and autopsy if Dr. Michaelsonwas actually responsible for the crimes. Will the authorities let the publicknow the truth? How can we ensure that the authorities tell us the truth?

Hisfamily and loved ones need the truth and closure, and his former patients andfamily members of patients (who all loved and trusted Dr. Michaelson) need to knowthe truth too. Maybe some of us or the media should contact LAPD and the L.A.County Dept. of Coroner to ask what actually happened at the crime scene.

Untilthe facts are known, I am withholding all judgment about Dr. Michaelson andwill continue to remember him the way I have known him for the past 5+ years. What a great, wonderful, outstanding doctor he was! His loss is truly enormous at Providence Tarzana Hospital and in the community. And I don't say that aboutmost doctors.

Dr. Michaelson, we are waiting for the facts. “Say it ain’t so!”

Something is really wrong with this "suicide-murder"! They say there were 4 gunshots and 2 of them killed the wife...How come there could be 2 more for him to kill himself???!!!!! Or on one of the video reports on TV they said that neighbors heard 4 gunshots: 1 and after 5 min 3 more???? this is insane!!! Does not make any sense!!!! It would be more realistic if 3 gunshots and then 1...but 1 and then 3...no way.... Either there is really something wrong here or its just misinformation about the gunshots...wish police could update the status of the case...

I knew Alex. He is not that kind of a person who could kill anyone and kill himself. He was very pragmatic and very successful in his life.

There is something here that we don't know. I believe, he and his wife Vera were killed by somebody. This is not a suicide murder.

I heard just few facts about what was happening. Vera has called Alex office and has asked him to come home. After that Alex left the office, telling everybody that he had an emergency. If Vera called him in emergency, that means something was going on in there home at that time. Also, just few days ago somebody has vandalized Alex's car, which was parked near his office in Tarzana on the reserved parking space, with his name on the sign...

I think, there are enough evidences to conclude that this was not a suicide murder, but rather a murder of two persons by somebody third involved. Police is too quick to conclude, while they still don't know the motive for this. The least Police could do is to continue their investigations. It is too soon to close the case!

The community here is concerned to find the truth. We all want to know what was actually happening and why.

I concur with Ed D's evaluation of Dr. Michaelson's character and I am not ruling out foul play bythird persons.  The police should not rush to the easy conclusion.

I agree with Ed D. Dr. Michaelson was not a kind of person that could hurt anybody.I had the honor to meet him and work with him for a few months while doing my interinship. I worked with him at his office and I never saw him angry or disrupeded for any reason. He loved Vera very much. The fact that he was flying to Florida Every other weeked shows how important she was to him. I believe there was somebody else in the house and I also believe there were kill and made it look like a suicide murder. I hope the Police invertigation continues and eventually find out what exactly happened.

Just a few nights ago I was telling a friend how wonderful Dr. Michaelson was in caring for my father. His compasion and approachable demeanor will never be forgotten.

I just heard this evening about Dr. Michaelson. I am so sorry for the great loss to all of the physicians and healthcare professionals at Providence Tarzana Hospital and the community who loved this young, kind, sweet, caring, intelligent, very dedicated man and wonderful physician. My heart goes out to the friends and loved ones of Dr. Michaelson and his wife.

I am deeply shocked and profoundly saddened by the sudden, unexpected, and senseless loss to him and his wife. I pray for their two young children. I am stunned, and it feels so unreal to me, like a terrible nightmare.

I just saw and spoke to him when he took care of my mother last week. He was always there to provide competent, caring medical treatment to my mother and father. He saved their lives many times over. He was very kind and respectful to me and would always take the time to talk to me about my parents’ conditions and treatment plans. He also would acknowledge and appreciate me for the caregiving services I’ve provided my aging parents over the years. I am profoundly sad and will miss him very much. My mom will too.I am grateful and appreciative for Dr. Michaelson's genuine compassion and goodness to my parents and me. May G-d bless Dr. Michaelson, his wife, Vera, with eternal peace. And may their parents, children, and loved ones, whose grief is difficult to imagine, find some comfort in the knowledge that Dr. Michaelson's life and journey, albeit interrupted, had great meaning, great purpose, and great and everlasting value.

I loved him too.  He was there with me and my grandmother through thick and thin.  When she was psychotic, dying, we called day and night.  He was always there.  He was unlike many doctors.  It is a huge loss for us too.  My deepest condolences to the family.
