Art Walk Can't Become 'a Mardi Gras Type of Event:' L.A. City Hall Looks at Reining it in Following Death of Infant

It looks like City Hall wants to make downtown's burgeoning Art Walk a safer place for hipsters after a 2-month-old boy was killed in an accident during a crowded version of the event earlier this month.

A 22-year-old without a drivers license was attempting to parallel park July 14 when the Cadillac he was driving jumped a curb and hit the baby in its stroller.

The tragedy prompted criticism of the event's throngs and evolution as a bar-fueled party night, even though cops said the driver had not been drinking and the victim was on the sidewalk. One gallery owner has even suggested ...

... that the city shut down major streets such as Spring and Main for the walk.

The proposal today by Councilman Jose Huizar and Councilwoman Jan Perry would create a task force "review traffic, crowd maintenance and other public safety measures during the Art Walk events, which happen on the second Thursday of every month," in the words of City News Service.

Victor Wilde, owner of The Brutique at The Last Bookstore (453 S. Spring St.), has been gathering signatures in support of calling on City Hall to close the streets around the event.

But that idea is apparently not on the table. Huizar spokesman Rick Coca:

The LAPD has been pretty solid in their opposition to that for the reason that they believe it would actually drastically increase the number of people that are there and turn it into what they called a Mardi Gras type of event.

He acknowledged that Art Walk partiers are an issue:

You get people who are there to appreciate the art and want to go to the galleries. Then you also have another contingent of people who are there more for the street fair atmosphere. We have to look at ways to control that.

Fewer food trucks and a limit on live music in parking lots could help do the trick, he said.

The task force would look at "immediate" measures that could make the next walk, on Aug. 11, safer.

The LA Artwalk has been purposely steered away from the focus on art to a focus on the "EVENT". All of the business leaders chose a director for the artwalk that is a PR person not an art person from the community.  All there to make sure the event takes a turn towards promoting personal  agendas.  No wonder the artwalk has turned into this mess. If real community art leaders had been brought in to bring the focus back to the art elements then Art would be the focus. It can happen but a real art leader needs to be brought in to make this change!  But I really have no hope for this to happen. The artwalk will become like all of the other things in L.A. a political agenda event with the soul sucked out of it in favor of the politicians agendas and corporate agendas. This is the real travesty of the potential of what the artwalk could be. Which is a a major art experience with layers of artists participating. Our community leaders: Al Abrams a commissioner appointed by our Mayor  is arrested for child porn charges-A PR person appointed to run the artwalk-A child dies. What else lies under the rugs of all of the other political moves that happened downtown? The changes in the future will be just more of the same. Stupid decisions made on political agendas that are created by sociopaths. Yeah I am pretty hopeless about where this is going. No one has stepped up to change things for the better -for the art!

On October 1, 2009, the non-profit board of the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk unanimously voted in a policy document meant to steer the growth and ensure public safety for the then-burgeoning community event. A link to this document can be found by googling "Policy directions abandoned by the Downtown Art Walk board in 2010."

On November 9, 2009, founding non-profit director Richard Schave (my husband) and I stepped down from the board of the non-profit we had founded, due to false attacks on our competence and credibility from Russell Brown, the Executive Director of the neighborhood's landlord's organization (HCBID) and then-President of the Downtown LA Neighborhood Council (DLANC), and the troubles that Mr. Brown's attacks had created within the board.

The policy document, although unanimously approved by the board, disappeared from the Art Walk website soon after we stepped down, as did the event's Mission Statement. We are unaware of any policy documents or Mission Statement which have replaced them.

We hope that this lengthy document, the result of ten months of feedback from the downtown community and research into the management of similar happenings nationwide, will be of use to the Art Walk Task Force as they seek to determine where this important event, held in the public trust, has been and where it is going.

To limit the reason people come to artwalk seems to shot L.A in its own foot. Who is the Council member suggesting this btw? I mean this Coca guy is just a spokesperson. Time to get involved with City Politics. No strong arming of the LAPD and their fear tactic. An accident happen and the rules for the most part were being followed. How is what they are proposing supposed to make it safer? Hmmm Close down the streets to CARS!!! period......Run the TRAINS LATER!!! simple...safer nobody gets run over and killed by pedestrians. If people want to do the Bars so what they wouldn't be driving therefore what's the harm..Jeez have imagination not DArk Ages kinds of approaches.

Is it wrong to be there just to get fucked up? I've enjoyed the walk solely on the fact that there's bars and booze, I don't give a fuck about art, and so what? Art is boring. Is it any different from bar hoping? No not really. Is it safe to sober up with food and catch the train back? yes duh!

Feveryone, 1) you probably don't have kids so you can't relate to her loss (if you do, so much for your role model approach to this) 2) how is it her fault? She was WALKINg on the sideWALK, which the name is self-explanatory.I share some of your sentiment as far as L.A. political incompetence but you're starting to sound like a d-bag when you just start spewing nonsense.  Enough of your attention-whoring tactics.

I sympathize with the mother because I am one too.  However, a 2 month old should not have been outside at an art walk event at 9:30pm!!  I'm sorry, but that kid doesn't even have all the proper shots to be out among other people risking the chance of catching something that he can't fight off on his own yet.  This was a freak accident but one that could have been prevented.  The positive is that at least this will force some sort of regulation on this event that seems to be getting out of hand.
