Carmageddon is Over: 405 Reopens Early on Sunday

Carmageddon turned out to be much ado about nothing (as predicted). More surprisingly crews got their work done on the old Mulholland bridge earlier than expected.

On Sunday morning L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that the 405 freeway between the 10 and 101 freeways would reopen at 11:30 a.m.

According to what Mayor V. told reporters at the scene:

The 10 and 101 connections would open first, then offramps, then onramps.

The shutdown for the Mulholland bridge work had been expected to last until 6 a.m. Monday morning and, it was feared, might even bleed into the Monday morning rush.

It's all over! Sort of. Another Carmageddon is scheduled for next summer ... so crews can finish the second-half of the bridge destruction and replacement work.

Added: The stretch of 405 wasn't expected to be fully reopened -- onramps, offramps and all -- until about 2:30 or 3 p.m.

Shortly before noon Fox 11 News' Rick Dickert tweeted that officials had apparently reopened the first lanes -- 405 north -- at the 10 freeway. Shortly after that Fox producer Ruben Villaescusa tweeted that both sides had reopened.

Chip Yost of KTLA News tweeted that shortly after noon the first batch of cars passed the bridge, with some drivers honking in celebration.

How much did the contractor make for finishing ahead of schedule?  Was there a bonus?  We know the penalties for not finishing, but while the freeway was shut down and with no major traffic problems, couldn't it have made sense to plow throw some additional work that may be difficult to do with regular traffic?  Also, how does a contractor underestimate the time a job will take by basically a day on a two and a half day project?

City did a great job informing people, the residents reacted well, and hopefully the workers just kicked ass, but it seems like there's more to the story.
