Feds Raid L.A. Union Station for Illegals, Tweeters Claim; 'Union Station' Starts Trending on Twitter

Categories: Immigration

union station tweet.jpg
[Update: Erick Huerta, who says he was one of the first to Tweet about the feds at Union Station on Friday morning, says he saw three men from the Department of Homeland Security -- one in full Transportation Security Officer uniform, another in "dress pants and a polo shirt with a 'Homeland Security' emblem on his chest" and a third with "Taser/gun on his thigh, and a bulletproof vest that read 'Police.'"

According to Huerta, "they weren't actively searching anyone. Just walking around
and making their presence known." ICE spokeswoman Lori Haley told us Friday that "ICE had no involvement in any enforcement or other activities at Union Station." Even if it wasn't ICE, though, Huerta, and many more Tweeters, maintain that there were indeed ID checks at the station later in the day.]

[Update, 2:30 p.m.: The Twitterverse is still a complete mess of warnings that ICE is raiding Union Station for illegals, all seemingly based on one call received by KPFK radio. The U.S. Marshals Service says it wasn't them. Amtrak police say they were only on their usual "24/7" patrol.]

[Update, 1:30 p.m.: Jorge Mario Cabrera, of CHIRLA, says he has confirmed with witnesses that the checkpoint was actually not run by ICE, but a different law-enforcement agency -- wearing black, with dogs in tow -- checking IDs and/or tickets after the LAX scare yesterday. Headline has been modified to include new information; it previously read, "ICE Raids L.A. Union Station for Illegals." Cabrera says it's great that KPFK radio "now has an open line that folks can call and report this type of thing" -- but it will need some honing. Indeed: Today was a lesson in how fast these things can blow up. Cabrera says this "could have been a trial, or an actual operation -- a sweep or something." We're still trying to figure out which agency was at the station.]

Ah, the modern age of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) evasion!

We've got online manuals on how not to get deported, Facebook-fueled rallies to keep fellow aliens in country -- and now, a Twitter stream of checkpoint warnings so steady it became a trending topic.

At about 10 a.m., civilians and immigrant-rights orgs began Tweeting reports of an ICE raid, or checkpoint, at Union Station in downtown L.A. By noontime, "Union Station" was trending.

"At Union Station, we're dealing with people of low means, who don't have money for a car," says immigration attorney Robert Perkins, who joined the Twitter stream to inform Angelenos of their rights. "And there are a lot of shops ... at which illegal immigrants might be working."

ICE did not respond to immediate requests for comment. Updates to come as they're available.

Many Tweeters indicated they got confirmation of the "raid" from KPFK radio, though no further announcements have been broadcast since we started listening at about 12:15 p.m.

Perkins' legal assistant says he has gotten multiple confirmations, from people either at the station or passing by, that ICE is conducting an immigration checkpoint.

The attorney himself says it's not technically illegal for ICE agents to request IDs from passerby, but if the ID is, say, from Mexico, they might consider that "reasonable suspicion" to believe the person is undocumented, and might then ask for their papers.

One Twitter user says:

union station tweet ice.jpg
Though immigrants have the right to ask for a trial before deportation -- during which they could be granted citizenship due to longtime residency, kids in the U.S., lack of criminal history, etc. -- many are either unaware of those rights or are scared to cause a disturbance.

"The area there is a neighborhood with a lot of Latinos," says Perkins. So his biggest question is: "How are they conducting this? If I walked in, as white and Jewish as can be, would they ask for my ID?"

If you were at Union Station today or know anything about the "raid," please contact us.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, PennyJump.com

Why don't illegal aliens just go home? Don't they realize that most Americans look upon them with a mixture of disdain and disgust? ICE should be raiding every school in Los Angeles and deporting each alien entity back to its point of origin. That will motivate the alien parents to follow suit.

Why are Latinos targeted so much. The United States has been a country of immigrants since its roots in 1776. Why were the immigrants from Europe not targeted when they arrived as bad as Latinos are being targeted? Is it because we have a different skin color? What is it that the United States government does not want us here?

We are a nation of bullies...through out history we have had an appetite for strutting our superiority among those who can't fight back.

Many European folks were picked up in the San Fernando Valley, while I was an apprentice.  With 80's amnesty, Latin America folks have it easier, by walking accross the border.  The European's have a more difficult obstacle; the ocean.

latinos who are US citizens are not targeted. its people who jump on over without documentation and using up US resources.

Using up US resources!!!! Don't you know how the application precess foes for those resources? Only people with SSN"s can apply. Undocumented  latinos are the hardest working people I have ever seen.

Corporate crime is the biggest and the most covert one out there but the laws are very lenient on punishing those guilty of it.  The media is designed to divert attention from these instances (Goldman Sachs, golden parachutes, etc.) and instead focus the public's attention on something the common folk will rally around:  illegal immigration.  The $700 millions or so in bailouts and golden parachutes get easily blurred out of our attention with the "problem" of illegal immigration and how "they" are the ones affecting the economy by draining social services.  When illegal immigrants get deported it reinforces a sense of patriotic justice, while corporations make millions or billions by defrauding these same patriots that choose to focus on those crossing the border.  So many people have lost much in this "economic downturn" and instead of being angry at the corporate thieves they focus their anger on the "illegal immigrants".  The folks up at the top are laughing their way to the bank while some of you direct your anger at illegal immigrants.  Big picture, people.  Big picture.

My payroll check used to be a lot bigger before the 1980's.  And only one spouse had to work to to pay for a home and provide for the household, even while corporate management made the most income.   Supporting all these social welfare programs has cut into my payroll-check deeply.  And, I agree with you Nando.  But our mayor and city council, who are supported by the government employee unions, are just as bad as corporate greed, because they chose to ignore, LA Municipal Code chptr 18; the Anti-predatory Loan Law.   And, no one is prosecuting realtors, or lenders, (let-alone the indicted Richard Alarcon) for approving loans they knew these buyer's couldn't possibly repay, and knew they would go into foreclosure.  But, they sure enjoyed making the 'bonanza' commissions.  And Housing Dept. is now taking advantage of their lost, by using our taxed dollars to buy, refurbish, and sell this foreclosed properties.  The City has no business being in the Real Estate business.  One of the many reasons why I ran for city council.

ICE Cold

Just a couple of points:

1) The immigration lawyer came accross just as ignorant and racist by saying "If I walked in, as white and Jewish as can be, would they ask for my ID?"  WTF does that mean and how does it help with what he is trying to do.  I'm sure some people would be just as upset if I said just don't look so chunti.

2) Do be careful about what you post on twitter and facebook regading poince/authority activivity.  They have quite a track record of twisting such things into obstruction and interfering.  There was just a case where a man was talking on facebook with homies that were telling him which bushes SWAT was in... I'm sure they are following up with that homie lookin out.

Yeah he did wrong on saying that but at the same time is true. My friend is from Lithuania and he lives in Arizona and I don't know if you know this but in Arizona they ask for your documents if they have are suspicious you are indocumented. Well anyway he got stopped once for "speeding" the office ask for a driver's license he said he did not have any the officers only told him that is illegal to drive without a license and he let him go with a warning and insisted he has to get one or else he shouldn't be driving. Of course he can't obtain a lincese because he is illegal in the country but he is just white enough for them to think he is not an immigrant. Which is stupid because many have been deported after not being able to show a license in a common traffic stop. So I am sure that is what the lawyer was referring to although he didn't wisely chose the words

The main purpose is NOT to catch and deport illegals - it's to accustom everyone else to bow down to authority in the name of "security". This is supposed to be a "free" country where one should expect to not be accosted by "law enforcement" to check your papers. People's paranoid ignorance now actually accept these raids as not only normal, but that more need to happen - until the group of "wanted" grows to include them... the slaves want stricter masters.

I have no problem if I am asked for my papers...that is what will weed out the illegals. There is simply no other way.

There are other ways to find individuals who are committing crime, documented and undocumented. ICE choosing to raid places like this (if indeed it was them) is nothing more than using scare tacticts to intimidate individuals.

Illegal aliens NEED to be afraid. They are trespassing upon our land, illicitly benefitting from our taxes, blowing up our fertility rate(s) beyond what this nation's resources can accommodate, and they are flaunting our laws. FEAR should be their first feeling when they awaken and their last when they go to sleep. Only when they return home will the fear subside.

What's wrong with ICE checking.  What part of illegal doesn't KPFK understand?  They are walking a very thin line of encouraging and facilitating illegal activites.  If I were ICE I would raid the radio station.

Im glad kpfk put out an announceme. And by the way... I would suggest our country use its resources on finding real criminals ... murderers. Rapists. Drug dealers. Etc. And stoping those illegal activities.Instead of looking for hard working humans who are trying to better their lives.

The problem, my friend, is that pretty soon all hispanic american citizens will have to bring along their passports while all other races (white, black, asians, etc) will be fine. Aka racial profiling.

If that's what it takes to get rid of the illegals, I have no problem carrying my passport. If I am asked, I will simply show my passport and be well on my way.

No, the officer has the right to detain you even if you show him a passport or a birth certificate. Detention centers get money from the feds accoprding to how many people they detain, even if the people are American citizens.
