Jeff Carr.
Jeff Carr, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraiogsa's chief of staff, announced he's stepping down from the gig.

Interestingly, he said he didn't have another job lined up, but that he wanted to return to the nonprofit world. (No "more-time-with-the-family" for this guy, apparently).

On top of all that, Carr was gracious enough to commit to staying on until a successor could be named. Villaraigosa:

For the last two years, Reverend Jeff Carr has served as my chief of staff, honorably leading this administration and moving our agenda forward. I look forward to working closely with him through this transition and in the years ahead.

Carr said any buzz about leadership problems inside the mayor's camp were "nonsense."

"I'm leaving because I want to leave," he said.

Carr came to the position through the mayor's beloved, $25 million-a-year-plus Gang
Reduction and Youth Development office in 2007.

He said the toughest part of the job was the red ink that plagued City Hall in the last two years (the mayor recently submitted a balanced budget for the fiscal year that just started).

" ... We're well along a path to getting the city's fiscal house in order,'' Carr said.

He called Villaraigosa someone who "cared about people that live on the margins in this city."

Ah yes, the margins that line Westwood, Holmby Hills, Brentwood -- those communities along his oft-touted "subway to the sea" route.

Jumping ship already?  I wonder what his "severance" package will be.  I guess the dominoes are starting to topple over...
