Confronting taggers is a deadly business in L.A. There are countless stories of people getting shot and killed. So we would strongly recommend that you not try this at home.

While taggers used to be pee-wees just trying to get their names "up," seems like more and more that they're hardened gangsters.

In our latest tale a teenager survived after he stepped up to a guy who appeared to giving the aerosol treatment to an apartment building in North Hills last month. The LAPD issued an update today after it obtained grainy security video (after the jump) of the shooter in action. Cops say it went down ...

... June 18 after 8 p.m. -- nearly in broad daylight (check the video), with people and cars passing by. The 18-year-old victim walked out of the complex, confronted the tagger, and was shot by what appears to be an accomplice.

This was at a building in the 8400 block of Langdon Avenue in North Hills. Police say the young man took cover behind a planter as the pair took off in a pickup, possibly driven by a third accomplice.

The teen, who was not identified, was hospitalized in critical condition but was later updated to "stable."

Detectives want you to take a look at the video and call them (818-838-9932) if you might know who they are.

With the Assembly and Gov Brown removing the right of citizens to protect ourselves by outlawing open carry, we are at the mercy of thugs like this.

Too bad no one confronted the tagger with a gun or a bat and killed them outright.

Wait!  Where's the 'mayor's' GYRD 'anti-gang' brokers in all this?  Let's see, do we need to pump more taxpayer revenue into the  'anti-gang' programs?   Or, do we increase funding for the folks in "Blue" who are equipped to handle the task?   Only an ethical mayor and city council would side with the public's safety and welfare.

It seems like there is enough difficulty already in keeping the folks in "Blue" within their legal bounds... how about you work on holding them accountable when they kill people before you hire 12,000 more officers.

Pleased to meet your acquaintance Mr Chris.  I'm law enforcement, but don't carry a firearm.  I deal with mostly enforcing and sometimes prosecuting violators for building, and zoning code violations. And, even then, I exercize courtesy to all.  However, I agree with your concern.  So often, I wish officers were able to control a suspect without excessive force, or if possible, throwing a net over the suspect.  Just last Tuesday, four gun shots rang out close to me as I was about to step out of my vehicle in this high-crime neighborhood.   It was a frightening experience, especially being unarmed.

There shows that Special Order 40 is useless.   Witnesses are not afraid of police, it's the retaliation from gangs who they fear.  If I had been elected, I would have pushed to repeal SO40 and promote hiring 12,000 police officers.  A strong force deters crime.  You don't wait for crime to increase, to hire new officers.

Sounds like you're just pandering to fear appeals. How do you plan to pay for adding 12,000 overpriced scarecrows to the public dole? Let's be honest most just show up after the fact to just fill out a form. Will there be any of easily reducing them if they are no longer needed, being it's so hard to get rid of union entitled workers. I honestly don't see how crime, the result of socioeconomic factors will change by adding more cops. Education and jobs cut crime. You're just sticking more fingers in a dike. More cops is just the illusion of public safety. Higher numbers of arrest don't mean there is a reduction in crime either, just a spike in arrest. Regardless stats are arbitrary, fudge with the factors and they say whatever you want them to say. The money it would cost to add 12K cops would be better used in providing better tools to the current force to better do their job. Faster turnarounds on DNA testing, automation wherever possible and farming out minutiae tasks to pencil pushing civilians for less. Is a guy with a gun and badge filling out a report for a missing car stereo really necessary or manning the front desk at the station, is that the best use of resources?

Appreciate your view point, Mr Torres, and glad to meet your acquaintance. Our present LAPD force is apx 10,000.  The ideal number to provide a safer city is 12,000 officers.  So, we would only be proposing to add 2000 additional officers.  The funding is there.  It would normally come from the Community Redevelopment Agency.  However during the CRA's existence, they falsely diverted hundreds of millions to politically connected wealthy developers, instead of, to the LAPD, schools and to neighborhoods, such as yours and mine.  Besides, that 12,000 figure was already proposed by former Police Chief Bratton.  However, Villaraigosa opposed the idea because it would have suppressed the gangs, then Villaraigosa wouldn't be able to justify keeping his 'anti-gang' program funded with tens of millions of taxpayer dollars he receives, and, has not yet accounted for it's spending.  Mayoral candidate and City Controller Ms Greuel, won't ask him for an accounting of those millions either, because they are allies, and she wants his support.

The idea is to suppress crime, and make all neighborhoods safe.  Years ago it was alot safer in LA.  Less crime would also make communities more inviting to employers, who would then employ the out of work residents who are in desperate need of a job.As a code enforcement official, I hear the public's plea for help with the gangs that control their neighborhoods.  Right now, they say they are reluctant to call police, because they take too long to respnd.

Last week tenants called police for a problem tenant on Orange and WashingtonBls, it took LAPD 3 hours to arrive. Had I been at their property and placed the call for police, they would have arrived in minutes.

I'll be at a forum at LAPD HQ's this Friday nite.  Be glad to meet you if you can make it.david barron
