Did TOMS' Blake Mycoskie Really Not Know About Anti-Gay Focus on the Family?

Categories: Queer Town

Blake Mycoskie
Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS shoes, landed in a heap of trouble when news broke on Friday that he spoke at a June 30 Focus on the Family event in Orange County.

Focus on the Family's longtime anti-gay agenda is ugly and widely known.

Soulforce, the gay rights organization that exposes anti-gay religious groups, notes in a special report that FOTF has pushed such ideas that homosexuality is a mental disorder caused by family problems and bad parenting, that gays want to destroy marriage and the family, that same-gender parents are unfit and seek to hurt children, that homosexuality can be prevented by parents and cured through 'reparative therapy,' and that gays are sick, ungodly people who want 'special rights,' not civil rights.

Mycoskie, who lives on a sailboat in Los Angeles, says he simply didn't know about these things.

"Had I known the full extent of Focus on the Family's beliefs," Mycoskie writes in a recent blog post, "I would not have accepted the invitation to speak at their event."

TOMS has a large gay clientele -- take a walk in any gay neighborhood and you'll see someone wearing a pair of the slipper-like shoes -- and is now ripe for a very public boycott.

Folks on Facebook and elsewhere are willing to take Mycoskie's word that he made a mistake and didn't properly vet Focus on the Family.

Guess a handsome, rich guy with a friendly smile thinks he can charm his way out of this brouhaha, but his excuse doesn't quite pass the smell test.

First of all, in this age of Google -- when it's second nature to do a quick, Internet search of someone or some group -- it's hard to believe no one in his company didn't check out Focus on the Family.

Secondly, Mycoskie is no stranger to the evangelical Christian world, in which FOTF is widely known as a powerhouse.

A Christianity Today article points out that the TOMS founder visited and held a TOMS-related event at Texas-based Abilene Christian University last year.

That college refused to allow a gay-straight alliance to form and was featured in a recent New York Times article titled "Even on Religious Campuses, Students Fight for Gay Identity."

Mycoskie also accepted a 2010 invitation to speak with members of Willow Creek Community Church, a mega-church in Illinois led by senior pastor Bill Hybels. That church promotes the idea that gays can change and become straight. Willow Creek also suggests that if gays can't do that, they should be celibate.

Soulforce targeted Willow Creek and Bill Hybels during a 2008 national tour, which sought to educate leading evangelical ministers in the United States on gay issues.

If Mycoskie would have turned down Focus on the Family, why didn't he do the same for Willow Creek and Abilene Christian University? Did he not vet them either? Or did he not really care all that much about their policies toward gays?

Sometimes it's the cover up that comes back to haunt you the most.

Correction: Christianity Today, not Focus on the Family as stated in a previous version of this post, pointed out Mycoskie's links with other evangelical Christian groups.

Lay off Blake Mycoskie he has done more good then any of you poor saps, and he has made money in doing so. You are willing to crusifie him for some indirect accusations that he is anti gay. You all need to focus your attention on something more important. All churches are anti gay, so am I anti gay for going to church.

STOP relating evangelical christians with HATE ! it is ignorant to generalize..Although gay marraige is not acceptable, there are some people who just love all people. This gay agenda thing is very annoying, now they are starting to target evangelical christians. If the organization that he spoke isnt pro gay, then let it be, its their choice. If blake doesnt believe in gay marriage, thats his choice..STOP FORCING THIS GAY ISSUE ON EVERYONE,its  not like evangelical christians or other anti gay are oppressing anyone. My belief is whatever you do here on earth ,answers to a high power at the end of one's life..we all do...

TOMS is about spreading shoes to those in need. Boycotts hurt CHILDREN, not someone's opinions. Please, focus on the mission of the company. They do wonderful things for many communities. Both Christians and the gay community (or the Christian gay community, for that matter) can support the TOMS cause.

Looks to me like everyone who commented on this page is narrow-minded. It's just as narrow-minded to judge Christians as it is to judge gay people. Rationalize it all you want, but it's all really judgmental. Even judging people who are trying to get free shoes to kids in Africa. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Everyone  is forgetting what he really went there to speak about. The organization he started to help children all around the world. He didn't maliciously accept that invitation to bash on gays. We're all people. Simple as that, who cares about, who or what we chose as our companions. People get so blind sided by what others do wrong and completely ignore the good. We call ourselves humane? I beg to differ.

As a follower of Jesus Christ and someone who does not believe homosexuality to be best, and someone who still loves homosexuals. I do not have a problem if Blake speaks at an event that promotoes homosexuality. Why is there the double standard? You live your life, I'll live mine. We all have a choice how we live. Can Christians not by shoes as well? Can Christians not help children who have diseases? If you are so hell bent on FOTF being anti-gay, please stop being anti-Christian. It is just as prejudice and it is a double standard.

Maybe he is the sort of man that doesn't condemn anyone, be it the gay community or the church?

I think that as this article is condemning FOTF for it's anti-gay situation, it is also propagating the same hate towards Blake Mykoskie that it is ostracizing FOTF for.  Fighting hate with hate is never the solution...just some food for thought...

Blake is a phony. He's all about the photo op. I've seen 'TOMS' take better shoes off kids just to put on a shitty pair of theirs.

Which is uglier or a greater form form of bigotry -- to love people or beast ? Certain have set out on a quest to rewrite the word of  God . Be careful you don't know what you are doing or what you are tampering with. The dictionary is next on your agenda but when all is done the truth will stand. Did TOMS' Blake Mycoskie not know about PRO- FAMILY-- FOCUS ON THE FAMILY. That is the question? Family is what sustains the civilized human race-- bestiality if allowed to continue will annihilate the civilized human race either by natural process or by judgment  from God.

Charlie_7093
Charlie_7093

This post, in its current context, makes no sense at all. We are not talking about bestiality here  (unless you equate homosexuality with bestiality, which is perverse). And the Bible is not the word of God - it is a loose collection of literature written by men from between 2 to 3 thousand years ago. A careful reading of it in its original languages (with a comparative amount of reading of other wisdom and spiritual writings written by the ancient Hebrews' geographical neighbors) makes this quite obvious for those who have enough faith in God that they do not fear doubting that every word in the Bible is literally true.

I love the christians who go out of their way to judge people when He's the only one who really has a say. & Also all these 'christians' who wanna throw curse words around. Quote the bible? Be my guest but don't quote it then do the exact opposite.

Can't people just let TOMS do the good work its is doing without all this!  Some people like Blake just look for an opportunity to spread the message- to everyone-anyone... TOMS' dedication to helping others is what should be emphasized here... not whatever agenda you have.

Simeon Mallette

@Charlie_7093 God loves everyone, but God does indeed condemn those who do not choose to follow Jesus before their death. When we live in America and there is a church every few blocks, everyone has the ability to choose. I hope that somehow Jesus will touch your life.

Charlie_7093
Charlie_7093

@Simeon Mallette - Jesus has, indeed, touched my life. I love Jesus and I try to live by everything which believe he authentically said. No, I have not been baptized and probably never will be. Your logic makes no sense. How can God love all his creations and then condemn them simply for not being baptized? Do you believe that the souls of unbaptized infants will spend eternity in the everlasting fire? Would a loving father really condemn his child simply for not engaging in a ritual? In my opinion, this thought process is mediaeval and ridiculous. God condemns no one. And don't presume that just because I am not baptized (and don't believe in the divinity of Jesus) that Jesus has not touched my life. Jesus said that the two most important things were to love God and treat your neighbor as you would yourself. That's it. Everything else is just ritual and commentary. So get off your high horse, stop focusing on your vengeful god, and try to accept everyone for who they are as God does.

Simeon Mallette
Simeon Mallette

The fact that you tell me to get off MY high horse is highly offending.I never said anything about being baptized in my comment, did I? I said that we should follow God. Being baptized is an outward sign to the world that you have chosen to follow God and love Jesus for what he did for you. Being baptized doesn't change what is in your heart. And by the way, if you are truly following Jesus, it says in the Bible that Jesus loves everyone, regardless of what they have done. You are correct there. Jesus did say to love your neighbor as yourself. But, he also does have clear definitions of what is right and what is wrong. I will not say anymore, but I ask you to do some serious thinking. I only say the things I do because I know in my heart that it's the truth.

And by the way, "God accepts everyone the way they are" is about their looks, their wealth or lack of, their personality and like things. It is not about their sin. If he said it was a sin, it's wrong.

I pray that I have said something to help you, whether you believe me or not.

And just throwing this out there, I still love TOMS shoes because it is an amazing thing that he gives shoes to people in third-world countries. That is great!

Charlie_7093
Charlie_7093

Although I'm sure your intentions are good, Simeon, nothing you said helped me at all. I don't think I need help in this area, although you seem to feel that I do. I love God, love Jesus and try my best. Yes, I was wrong to focus on the baptism thing, but I still don't know why so many so-called Christians are so focused on pointing out the ""sinful" ways of others - spreading nothing but despair and self loathing. God is nothing but forgiveness, God dos not judge, and Jesus said nothing about homosexuality. I feel I am a good person, I try to do right by others, try to be compassionate and try to help humanity as much as I can. That's all that God asks of us, as far as I'm concerned. We will probably never agree. As far as TOMS goes, if they are doing good things for underprivileged children then more power to them. To be perfectly honest, in retrospect, if Blake is anti-gay then I really couldn't care less, as long as he isn't attempting to take away my individual rights as an American citizen. At first I was incensed by this, but after hearing about all the good that TOMS does I've let it go.

I have a pair of TOMS and purchased them because the idea of donating shoes to poverty stricken children was a great idea.  I take him at his word. This is such a great company for one mistake to cause a boycott.

Just because @Toms interviewed with them doesn't mean he supports their beliefs...He's been to my private christian college in Texas as well, but not everyone at those schools are anti-gay believers. #justsaying

I am happy to see that a person like Blake Mycoskie is unafraid to appear in mainline evangelical contexts like Willow Creek. I understand that for a gay lobbyist who wrote this article it is important to make him look bad but surely people can separate news from politically motivated campagning.

It was an honest mistake from a company that has made great strides in ONLY 5 years, it is an unfortunate growing pain and a great lesson learned...over 1,000,000 pairs of shoes on the feet of children around the world and now to help give sight to those in need?!  Do you think TOMS won't donate to these recipients if they are gay...come on people?!  That was the intended focus, but clearly it traversed through the wrong channel.  Blake walks his talk.  On top of that, TOMS employs gays, straights and a diverse mix of ethnicities.  The media is just too stupid and starved and perpetually wants to recycle the same bullshit instead of covering real and progressive news.

Who do we hurt by boycotting? Mycoskie or the shoeless children that lose out on the free shoes?Mycoskie should be talking to as many different religions, anti-religion, gay, anti-gay, groups, and people as he can.

It's about the shoeless, not about your agenda's.

Wow. What a surprise. You will do anything to smear someone's name that thinks different than you. He is trying to cover his rear end because he knows you people are ruthless against people who disagree with your point of view. Once again you are the picture of "tolerance" as long as someone doesn't disagree with YOUR beliefs. Typical.*sigh and eye roll

So now there is something wrong with having religious beliefs? A person does not have to actually endorse an organizations stance on every issue just to be able to speak to the people from within that organisation.

This article seems to go as far as to bash him for appearing to have basic Christian beliefs regardless of his personal stance on homosexuality.

You want to rake him over the coals for even associating with people that have views different from yours, yet I thought the gay community was supposed to be offended whenever faced with ignorance and intolerance?

Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black, don't ya think?

The man puts his mission first. That mission is to prevent disease by getting shoes out to the Third World. Christian politics may be objectionable to many, but churches are wellsprings of philanthropy through their missions. They have a common goal. He speaks to gay organizations, no doubt, concerning his mission. Tom's Shoes is not donating shoes to homophobes, nor does it financially support a homophobic agenda. They sell shoes, they give shoes to the poor, and gay orgs should STFU, grow up, and recognize that people of opposing political views often work together on altruistic causes in the real world.

Did anyone even think to discuss what HE actually said at the event?  Does he have to check out every thing an organization has ever done in order to make sure he never offends anyone?  Good luck with that...everybody offends someone.

Way to be a part of the problem Jhon, although I'm not a Christian, and disagree quite vehemently with much of their world view, I do not hate "them". They are your neighbors and family.

You and FoTF are just different sides of the same coin.

I attended the Focus on the Family event June 30 and listened to Mycoskie share his story about the first time they delivered 10,000 pairs of shoes to needy children.  They rented a bus and drove around to the villages with his family.  He described watching his mom on her knees washing a child's feet with a handiwipe before placing the shoes.  With tears in his eyes, Mycoskie said how it reminded him of Jesus washing the disciples' feet.  Mycoskie is doing a good thing and if you ask me, his heart is in the right place.  He shouldn't have to apologize for anything and it is sad he felt pressured into doing so.

CMD727

If Mycoskie is speaking at any event willing to have him, regarless of their social views, in order to promote his cause, then he should say so. Have the balls to say it instead of playing stupid, which he is not. By playing dumb he looks like he is trying to play both sides. And for the record, the gay rights movement is a human rights movement...period. There was a time when the "moral majority" were actively and violently against the civil rights movement. Just as I have no time for bigots, I have no time for religious people trying to justify their hate and oppression yet again.I am not gay, neither is anyone in my immediate family that I know of. My family has been very involved in fighting for gay rights and we don't understand how anyone cannot see this as a human issue. Everyone I know is for gay equality. The winds of change are coming....fasten your seat belts. Oh wait, nevermind...I forgot. This will have almost no bearing on your life what-so-ever. Unless your gay that is. All of you who will be left with nowhere to direct your hate, don't forget, you still have Planned Parenthood, immigration, atheists and agnostics, etc. etc.

I think your getting caught up in an unnecessary argument.  Doesn't the gay community support TOMS shoes because they value the cause?  Why would anyone want to argue with someone else who supports giving shoes to kids?  The only people who will really suffer here are the kids.  If gay and lesbian and evangelical and tea party or whatever other groups collide together for the same purpose, the result shows more shoes for more kids.  Isn't that a plus?

So many beliefs have been changed or altered through the years.  So many gray areas.  Whether we like it or not, the bible does give the standard for righteous living.  People will always put other people down.  That's why need to believe in the Lord Almighty & what He represents.  It's not an easy thing to do.  There will always be persecution & even abuse by believers themselves as evidenced by comments above and below.  And it only gets worse.  So brace yourselves.
