L.A. Council Threatens To Boycott Delta Airlines Over Non-Existent "No Jew" Policy

deltaairlines.png
The L.A. City Council is contemplating another boycott -- this time against Delta Airlines.

Councilman Paul Koretz has introduced a resolution to boycott the airline over its controversial "no Jew" policy.

Wait. What?

OK, so it turns out that Delta Airlines does not have a "no Jew" policy.

The confusion stems from this article on the right-wing website WorldNetDaily. (To give you an idea: these are the people who thought Barack Obama's birth certificate was forged.)

On June 22, WND reported that Delta's partnership with Saudi Arabian Airlines "would require the American carrier to ban Jews" from flights to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The story quoted the wife of a Republican congressman complaining that Delta would be "the first Shariah-compliant airline in the United States."

Shockingly, this turned out not to be true. But that didn't stop the story from spreading. It got picked up by Religion News Service and other outlets, and pretty soon Delta was getting denounced by the Anti-Defamation League.

Delta pushed back, explaining that it does not discriminate against Jews. Religion News Service then corrected and retracted its initial report. USA Today, which had briefly posted the RNS report, clarified the misunderstanding. The story became a learning exercise in how misinformation spreads online, and then it pretty much went away.

Until Paul Koretz got wind of it. He's more than a month late to the party, but he's making up for his tardiness with a strong dose of righteous indignation:
It is very disturbing to learn from the media that Delta Airlines has adopted the so-called "No Jew Policy" of Saudi Arabian Airlines. Delta will add Saudi Arabian Airlines to its SkyTeam Alliance of partnering companies and would require Delta to ban Jews and holders of Israeli passports from boarding flights to Saudi Arabia.
So this nonsense has now migrated across the political spectrum, from its right-wing origins to the left-wing L.A. City Council. And Paul Koretz is behaving like your crazy uncle who won't stop forwarding conspiratorial emails to you, even after they've been debunked on Snopes.

Except, unlike your crazy uncle, Paul Koretz is making policy.

So, for the sake of good government, here's what's wrong with what Koretz wrote. First, Delta hasn't adopted anybody's "No Jew Policy." Second, Jews are allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia -- it's Israeli passport holders who are banned. Third, that's Saudi Arabian law -- not the policy of any particular airline. Fourth, Delta doesn't fly to Saudi Arabia, and its partnership with Saudi Arabian Airlines doesn't include a code-sharing agreement that would allow the airlines to sell each other's tickets. So nobody can board a Delta flight to Saudi Arabia -- Jews, gentiles or otherwise.

But other than that, dead on.

It gets worse, because now Councilmen Eric Garcetti and Mitchell Englander have signed on to this boycott idea.

Who will tell them they've been punked by WorldNetDaily?

I think that travel comes from some deep urge to see the world, like the urge that brings up a worm in an Irish bog to see the moon when it is full.

I did not fully understand the dreaded phrase “terminal illness” until I saw Heathrow for myself.

Isn't banning all Israeli passport holders just the same as banning Jews or am i missing something?

While the Delta story is old news, this reporter Gene Maddaus, caught my attention for his incredulous argument that "... Jews are allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia, it's Israeli passport holders who are banned."  Well, duh, Mr. Maddaus!?  Anyone ever tell you that Israeli passport holders are JEWS??  Ever hear of Israel and who lives there??  You attempt to make your ridiculous argument a sane one while smearing the likes of us who are equally incredulous that you could write something so stupid!

Recently in Israel, they made it illegal to boycott against Israeli companies and compared doing so to terrorism.  Now, as soon as there is a rumor of anti-Semitism, the sympathizers attack with a boycott of their own. Hypocrites!

Can governmental leaders get any dumber?  Really.... if they focused on doing their jobs and not all this BS grandstanding all the time over nonsense we would all be a lot better off.  Delta is about as Jewish friendly as any business gets.

Delta is the only non-unionized airline however, and is not allowing a vote on whether employees want to become unionized, which is in direct violation of labor laws. This is actually the sticking point over the FAA debate, where the GOP is backing Delta's anti-union vote stance. I, for one, will no longer be using Delta.

Matt and Lien you both are wrong.  As a former Delta employee yes the "culture is unique" but let's get down to the facts.  Union elections were held last year and each employee group voted collective bargaining DOWN.  The NMB which has 3 members 2 of which are Obama appointees and former union representatives have not agreed with the elections and unions have filed suit against Delta for "interferring" with elections.  BS!  I guess Delta Employees will be forced to vote again until union representation wins like the Gore V Bush election in 2000.Now Lien you say that Delta employees are largely in the dark but I beg to differ Fact:  Non union employees at Delta make more money than former Northwest employees.  Fact:  Delta pays there non union employees a larger Bonus than Northwest union employees were getting.  Fact:  Flight benefits are more liberal at non union Delta than at former unionized Northwest.  So you tell me Lien why would anyone at Delta vote for a union?  You tell me?

Matt, you couldn't be more wrong. The unions in question were  voted out late last year. Obviously, you're thinking of Delta's opposition to the National Mediation Board's ruling prior to those elections that the outcome of union voting in the airline industry must be based on the actual number of votes cast. This is a change from the previous, long-standing policy of counting all non-voting employees as if they had in fact voted NO to unionization. The more rabid faction of the Republicans, who had no problem before the rule was changed by the NMB, which now has  two Democrats sitting on its three-member board, see this as some sort of scheme contrived by President Obama  to curry favor with the unions. Probably so, but that doesn't mean much, and what is to be made of the Republicans being so much in favor of the old system?

As an airline employee myself, I think it was about time that union elections were brought to the same voting standards applied to other elections. The reason airline CEOs are so worked up about this is because for every uninformed or even just plain lazy employee who doesn't vote, that's just another vote in the "NO" column.

Delta's workers are largely in the dark about the reality of union representation (ask me how I know this) and apparently know only what their management tells them, which is why they always seem to vote against their own interests.

All part of Delta's "unique culture".
