Erwin Molina, Hiker in His 20s, Takes Fatal Plunge From Waterfall at Eaton Canyon Park

My Own 100 Hikes
Eaton Canyon Falls
Updated below with a photo of Molina, an L.A. resident who reportedly attended Los Angeles High.

A young man who died Sunday evening while hiking with three friends at Eaton Canyon Park (located just east of Altadena) has been identified as Erwin Molina. The Pasadena Fire Department has IDed him as 26 years old, but the L.A. County Coroner's Office says all they're sure of is that the victim was in his 20s.

According to Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian, Molina reached the first of two waterfalls on the park's main trail around 6:30 p.m.

"At the first waterfall, people like to climb up and take photos," she says. But "it's very challenging terrain."

After Molina fell 35 feet to the "rocky canyon bottom" below, his friends called 911. A search-and-rescue team then hiked to where the victim lay -- about a mile-and-a-half into the trail -- and found him in critical condition.

First responders gave Molina an IV on scene before he was airlifted out with a helicopter. He died a short while later at Huntington Hospital.

SoCal hiking blog Modern Hiker calls the trip to the first waterfall "suitable for adventurous beginners":

Eaton Canyon is one of those must-see hiking areas of L.A., both because the waterfall is actually impressive by San Gabriel standards, and that it's so darn close to the city that you really don't have any excuses not to go. The trail is easy to follow, and as long as you can hop across some boulders in a river (or have some hiking sandals to wade through), you'll be just fine getting through the hike.

Derderian says that though Pasadena firefighters "respond to several rescues typically up in that area, usually it's more sprained ankles and broken arms." However, a similar fatality did occur last year.

This time, Molina's death could have been related to a light rainfall that fell in the area on Sunday, which -- according to Derderian -- could have given the rocky trail an extra layer of slipperiness.

"There were a lot of variables with the terrain and the weather," she says. "Even experienced hikers that could happen with."

She adds that the Fire Department advises against attempting to climb to the second waterfall, and recommends bringing "cellphones... extra water, maps, and identification."

Did you know Erwin Molina? Please share below. Also, has anybody had problems with the Eaton Canyon Park trail before?

Update: Weekly commenter Sanchezzz89 says Molina formerly attended Los Angeles High School. What appears to be the victim's Facebook page lists him as a current resident of Los Angeles.

Another commenter, Joliver_15, says he witnessed the fatal fall:

"I personally don't know Erwin, but I was up there at the time him and his friends were. There were about 10 of us at the 2nd waterfall. On the way back some of his friends were ahead of others. He was about 30-40ft behind us. I believe he took a wrong turn down and ended up in a bad spot. Screams were heard as I rushed down but it was too late."

It seems they are always air-lifting people out EVERY Saturday and Sunday - now, this summer, more and more incidents during the week, too.  PLEASE stop being stupid folks!  Way too much helicopter traffic across the foothills as it is, now with all the inexperienced hikers falling practically everyday more injuries and taxpayer expense...ugh.

Erwin was my best friend growing up. I knew him since 2nd grade. We went to elementary through high school together. He was always composed and never let his emotions get the best of him. I remember as kids we would trade Pokemon on gameboy, play Yugioh through the phone, and one hot summer day I remember we filled trash bags with water and stood in it to keep cool. We did dumb and lame things but we always had fun. Im gonna miss you! I'll pray for you ever day Erwin. You will always be loved and will never be forgotten.

I HATE hearing these types of stories. I'm a hiker and it just eats at me.

I don't know the situation with this young man and why this happened. But it did happen and if it makes one person stop and remember that hiking isn't like walking in a park then something good will come from this tragedy.

Nature rocks. Hiking rocks. But if you think it's like a theme park you're setting yourself up for disaster. And the easiest, smartest and most essential rule to remember is to never, EVER leave a trail. The special view just isn't worth it.

I would like to propose to the Forest Service that signs be posted on popular trailheads with some simple 'do's and don'ts' of hiking. If you need to scare people with some realities then so be it. You've got urban dwellers wanting to enjoy nature and many are unprepared and unaware. And hiking is certainly not something anyone should lose their life over.

Again, my apologies to this young man's family and friends.

I agree with you huge signs should be up because tragedies like these should not happen. He was 21 years old but if you knew Andy you'd know he was a kid @1afe193d0429d4523bd90b6b6a281456:disqus  heart. I know this because he was my godson, my neighbor & a role model for my son :(

I met Erwin at my 19th birthday through my boyfriend who knew him since the 2nd grade. When I met him, he was friendly and easy to get along with. From what my boyfriend tells me, they were best of friends and shared all the memories he could think of with me. Even though I've only met you once, I'm glad I had a chance to meet you. Rest In Peace.

I knew Erwin in high school, he was such a silly guy! He would always kind of mess with my hair, you know, how kids used to do it back then. He was a cool dude; though i was never really close friends with him, but i would always hang out at the same spot where he and all his friends used to hang out (at the tree!). I know he's in a better place now, I cant believe that he's gone.. cant really play with death.. R.I.P Titi

I meet Andy  when he was just a kid as I started dating my husband. My husband & Andy's big brother Frank are best friends, and as I received the news today I can't stop thinking how much were gonna miss him. Last year my mother had a great fall in our yard & Andy called me to alert me of what was going on with my mom. He stayed with her until I got home & made sure she was ok. He was so shy but with a huge heart!!!!! Andy you're now our guarding angel & just know we will always remember you & take care of your mom for you!!! May you rest in peace, we love you dearly.

Kids from the city come up here all the time (I also live close by), & they have no idea what they're doing & how dangerous climbing can be here. It's so tragic.

So sorry about Erwin...People get into trouble in that area all the time.  We live near the canyon, and visits by the helicopter to bring casualties out is a regular occurrence.  The canyon hike is no problem at all, but climbing those rocks is very treacherous.
