Porn Star HIV Case Shuts Down L.A.-Based Industry Amid Controversy Over Mandatory Condom Use

Bad news today for the porn biz: Another performer has apparently tested positive for HIV. This lead the industry trade group, Free Speech Coalition, to call for a stop to adult video production for now.

The possible positive was revealed Saturday and made public via an FSC press release today.

The moratorium on production will go on until those who might have worked with the porn star have been ID'd.

It's bad timing for the industry:

The L.A.-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation has been on a mission to force government agencies to require condoms on-set. In fact it's gathering signatures right now in order to get a citywide vote on an ordinance that would require the city of L.A. to mandate condoms for porn shoots it permits.

FSC says the positive didn't come from its own industry testing service, known as Adult Production Health and Safety Service, which was set up to test performers once a month.

The industry's own system requires porn stars to show up on set with clean results.

The AHF wants the state, county and city to enforce existing federal workplace regulations that would seemingly require condoms.

FSC, meanwhile, states:

Our first priority is to protect performers with reliable health services and assist producers with protocols that minimize liability, while remaining compliant with state and federal regulations regarding medical privacy.

We tried to get FSC chief Diane Duke on the line but she was in a meeting.

The last high-profile HIV-positive test for a porn star happened last last year. That performer, Derrick Burts, has become a poster child for AHF's efforts to get the industry to use condoms. But some have argued he moonlighted as an escort and, as such, shouldn't blame the industry's protocols (or lack thereof) for his situation.

In 2004 another HIV scandal rocked the industry, temporarily halting production.

The industry says consumers won't buy porn with condoms. It also claims that its testing program catches performers with diseases, keeps them off-set, and works.

The AHF says there's no way around federal law that prohibits workers from being exposed to blood-borne pathogens. In other words, you shouldn't be exposed to sperm at your job.

Stay tuned.

Condoms don't protect, please get real. All that needs be done is mandate by law all porn made without condoms will be punished to the max, fined a million each dvd. Give the porn indust orders to put a big maker on all porn made at, after, the time mandated law is activated. Any and all other porn made before this time is to be destroy as a heatlh hazard that promotes unsafe sex. You die hards want something to cry about. I thik it's way past time to give this indust something to really cry about. They need their pee pe wacked hard.

Why don't people get it? We have been spanked by the hand of consequence to learn that sex=babies, promiscuous sex=disease! This is nothing new.

Chances are, if you were offered $150,000, you'd take it up the ass too.  It's NOT just a "homo's" disease dickwad.  Most men in the porn industry are gay for pay.  Straight men getting paid an absurd amount of money to give it and take it.  Most gay men have more respect for themselves and don't need to live in the gutter of the the porn industry.

wow dannyboi, you are wise sage full of subjective opinions /sarcasam

you start off your post by lambasting dick james's insenitive and ignorant comment that is chock full of uninformed generalization, and then finish up by making exactly the same type of comment yourself by voicing your insensitive, ignorant opinion by generalizing all porn actors as people with no self respect who live in the gutter.

you need to rethink how you view the world, dont get on your high horse when someone is ignorant and then start doing the same exact thing once your in the saddle...

A little perspective on the weekend's HIV news:

A Wisconsin health clinic announced that 2,345 patients may have been exposed to Hepatitis and/or HIV.

Another 22 of 78 units of donated blood in Philippines tested positive for HIV. The figure brings to 124 the total number confirmed to be positive for HIV.

Where was AIDS Healthcare Foundation?   Fighting porn, of course.

Such a mandate will have but one outcome ... the industry moving out of the state.

It’s so sad to say, but just as I and others have warned since AHF’s attacks began in 2009, Michael Weinstein’s agenda has led to both the destruction of AIM Healthcare, AND the driving of more and more adult production out of state — where health and safety protocols either do not exist or are ignored by the unscrupulous.

Initial reports/rumors at this time are that this new case (and all its supposed potential exposures) occurred in Florida.

Does it not strike anyone as odd that, although the 2009 "Patient Zero" case (which took place in Nevada -- and in which NO performers were infected on set) and the 2010 Derrick Burts case (Florida) were also not California-based productions, AHF’s response has been to demand mandatory condoms in California — along with a Los Angeles-based ballot initiative?

Even if enacted, these measures would have done NOTHING to prevent these cases of HIV exposures within the adult industry.

If anything, AHF’s relentless attacks on the California adult production industry will lead to MORE risk for performers, because someone, somewhere will always be willing to take risks that California workers would be prevented from taking.

These are the people who DESTROYED the health clinic for adult industry performers, helped drive adult production out of state, and, in the process, fractured adult industry health and safety protocols designed to prevent and mitigate such incidents. Why? So that condom Nazi Michael Weinstein could assert that now that the industry’s protocols have been compromised, “the responsible thing for the industry to do” is require condom use on all adult film sets.

Certainly there had been porn production outside of California prior to AHF’s attacks — but we can now see the tragic consequences of driving adult production away from the San Fernando Valley (and/or underground). Make no mistake, because of Weinstein’s agenda there will be more and greater risk to performers, not less.

The problem isn’t porn, and the problem isn’t porn in California — the problem is fanatics like Michael Weinstein.
