Miles Morales: Spider-Man's PC New Replacement Is Half-Black, Half-Latino

Miles Morales
Apparently, half-human, half-spider wasn't diverse/culturally cutting-edge enough for Marvel Comics' most revered superhero.

Sorry, Peter Parker: In its "Ultimate" line of Spider-Man adventures, Marvel is looking to do like Beyonce and "Upgrade U" (or, more accurately, kill u off) for a world-weary, street-smart blacktino kid named Miles Morales, perhaps to expand their consumer base outside white nerds who live with their grandparents.

And as for you, Hollywood:

Time to open the Spider-Man casting call from pasty crackers like Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst to the brave new world of black and brown. (Much in the brave new tradition of cartoon character Princess Tiana, a Disney doll from the Louisiana bayou.)

Afrohispanos are more common in New York than Los Angeles, as the East Coast Latino population more heavily hails from pre-mixed countries like Cuba and Puerto Rico. But here are the top -- OK, and only -- Hollywood actors who could play Morales:

Lloyd Banks. Tyson Beckford. Kid Cudi. (Yeah, we know -- pickings are slim.)

Marvel
Morales' debut cover, due out tomorrow
"When the opportunity arose to create a new Spider-Man, we knew it had to be a character that represents the diversity -- in background and experience -- of the twenty-first century," says Axel Alonso, Marvel editor in chief, in the press release on Morales.

And writer Brian Michael Bendis tells the Associated Press: "He's younger than Peter Parker, he's coming from a completely different background, a completely different world view."

Joke website "Haha, JK!" rushes to poke easy fun at Bendis' brainstorming process (and, uh, Spidey's impressive new undie bulge):

"We took a field trip to a different neighborhood, but we left because we didn't feel comfortable," they false-quote him as saying.

Heh. But in all seriousness: Does this reek of desperate, hasty diversification for the sake of superstar PR? We will say this: The fact that Marvel officials haven't identified Morales as anything beyond half-black, half-Latino, which could mean a million things in America, isn't a good starting point.

I was not aware that Peter Parker was to be immortal..if anything SpiderMan was to last as long as the Human Race does and why are we stuck on only one half of Miles Morales ethnically?..Aftter all his mom is Latina..why are we not talking about him being an honor student? Why are we not talking about his unusual compassion for others or his admiration for what Parker stood for..Helping other people...???...back in the 60's when I was a boy a teenager intoduced me to Parker Clark Kent not withstanding..my hope is to introduce some young person to Miles Morales so that SpiderMan can live forever!

this is retarded not because of who the replacement is, but because there is one. ok, so spiderman is human, he had to die eventually but dont push some politically correct kid on us, let him stay dead

Latino and hispanic aren't races and there are plenty of pasty white Latinos. The Miles Morales Character is Black and whatever race the Latino side of his family is. Miles could be all black, mixed race, white or any other race because Latino is an ethnicity not a race.

How is it appropriate to call white people "pasty crackers?"  How on earth did this get green lit to be in your publication?  Racism is racism is racism, and that is extremely offensive and incredibly unprofessional in the world of national journalism, whether you call your author a blogger or a reporter.  Whether it is intended as sarcastic, humorous, or tongue in cheek, it is completely inappropriate.

It doesn't suprise me in the wake of all the new Black supers hitting the stands these days. Marvel just wants to capatalize on the controversy. Personally I find the "Sons of Liberty" series from the Lagos brothers far more satisfying than anything Marvel is doing these days. I think thats probably why Marvel did this-SOL is right over their shoulder!

Its just sad that the first line of the article starts off with "Apparently, half-human, half-spider wasn't diverse/culturally cutting-edge enough for Marvel Comics' most revered superhero." As if changing it to a Half black or half latino is not human enough. can anybody name any black superheroes. I just don't understand how this is an issue at all. if we really saw each other as equal changing the color of spider man would be as pointless as changing the color of the Hulk (purple, gray yeah im a black nerd) regardless. why can't we accept this new character the same way we had to accept every white superhero character. I just don't get it. what even worst is that its a new character another dimension and people can't even let that be ok. and Glen Beck I swear that man is just plain Ignorant i feel sorry for him. It really makes me sad how we will always have this stupid race issue on the table for as long a we live or until aliens come and tries to take over our world

Wow. This REALLY pisses me off. The LA Times seriously needs to reevaluate the process by which they hire these jackass writers. I find the writer's use of the term "blacktino" extremely sarcastic and offensive, as is the overall tone of the article. And this is not the first time some wannabe journalist took a crap on The Times and tried to pass it off as a well-supported commentary: http://opinion.latimes.com/opi...

Are you seriously headlining this as a "PC" decision? Jesus, when is it going to be an artistic choice at worst, a PR choice at best to choose a main superhero character be non-white?

Articles like this make me chuckle because people like you will never been satisfied. If marvel released a new spider man that was white you'd say marvel comics is racist because they aren't "diversifying" themselves. However now they're desperate because they made a mixed race character.

I keep trying to figure out the issue here and why so many people care what the character's race is. But you know, we live in a "Color - Blind Society" now!

Joel Anderson
Joel Anderson

Miles is not a mixed-race character. He is black. He may have a hispanic family name, but his parents don't run around spouting spanglish randomly like Power Man 2.0, or Dc's current Blue Beetle. Latino/hispanic isn't a race. There are only 3 races: caucasoid, mongoloid (asian), and negroid.

Wow, I never knew it took so little to be a "journalist", either that or your being sarcastic to the point of being FAR too sarcastic.

First off it is obvious you know absolutely nothing about comics, or at the most, very little. Characters are constantly replaced by various new characters every year. Superman has not always been Clark Kent, it has been a black man named Steel, a black woman also known as Steel, a robot, a lunatic, blue clark kent, and red clark kent, for instance. Marvel's Captain Marvel was once replaced with a Black Woman who, while relatively unknown, is always portrayed as one of THE MOST competent leaders and heroes of the Marvel universe.

I will agree his being identifyed by his race alone does nothing for Marvel's PR. They should try and make it clear about WHO he is beyond that.

And....would anyone think a kid, depicted as lower income, not raised by his parents, in Queens(no offense to Queens) would be a nerdy white kid anyway? Peter Parker could be any race if there were not pictures or physical description.

This writer obviously thinks he's cooler then the rest of us. Typical hipster you think you're so cool putting everyone else down. The whole article is like a scatter shot of backhanded compliments and snarky remarks. Oh yeah and kudos to marvel. it's a good move.

As a comic store owner I am proud to put this comic on my shelves.  And to suggest that making one of their main characters a half-black/half-hispanic is a ploy to sell MORE books knows absolutely nothing about demographics and sales.  This will hurt sales, long term.  Comics starring minority characters simply don't sell as much as books starring white characters (I certainly hope this changes, but a fact is a fact.)  I don't read LA Weekly, but if their plan is to do no research and just insult every customer of what is a literally a billion dollar a year business (SOMEONE has to be reading these books and watching these movies right?) then how can I take anything they do seriously?

TeenaMay
TeenaMay

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. re: "Comics starring minority characters simply don't sell as much as books starring white characters" well, the way it changes is we start starring minorities as main characters. Sounds like a catch 22 but it isn't.

The reason we look to white characters as the catch-all is because the industry started as white-only for SOOO long (i'm talking TV, radio, stage acting, entertainment stars in general) so we have a long uphill battle us "minorities". But if you keep shelving the Star-white over and over nothing changes. Granted you're just the distributor, you don't make the comics or the creative decisions. So basically this message should probably go to Marvel or DC Comics...........

Geoffrey's Comics
Geoffrey's Comics

I totally agree with you.  I want Marvel and DC to publish more minority characters.  I wasn't saying that the way it is is the way it has to be forever.  Just pointing out that to paint Marvel's plan as a cash grab ignores the fact that minority comics throughout history have not sold as well.  Hope this comic is a first step towards that.  I just know that I get to hand my little nephew a comic book with a Spider-Man that looks like him, and I can't wait to see his face when he opens it up.

So, why is having a Black/Hispanic Spider-Man PC again?

If you've never read any of Brian Michael Bendis' work you really need to hold your opinions. Powers, his run on the avengers and ultimate spider-man are all brilliant and all came from a writer that knows how to write a good story. so please, go back to banging your ugly girlfriend and leave the comics to the fans.

Geek Mundo

Do you even READ comics?  It certainly doesn't seem like it.  And don't EVEN begin to pat yourself on the back because the three actors you mentioned only go to show just how little you know about actors of color.  Why is this a bad thing?  Peter Parker is still intact in the original storyline.  This is an offshoot series.  Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey, honey.  White people are not the only people on Earth and seeing as how in the real world various people of various races can hold the same position, Spider-Man is no different.

No, it's not normal. The writer is being kind of an idiot and trying to seem hip by making fun of people who read comics.

Even as Black male, I find it disturbing how in an attempt to be cosmopolitan many writers trash white people, especially white males as if they're the scum of the earth. I'm not one who even remotely considers takes the concept of 'reverse-racism' seriously as something that keeps down white males, but that doesn't mean It's remotely OK to just deride white people for no other reason than they're white. Let me give the writer here a quick tip, if you can't replace 'white' with 'black' in what you're posting and feel comfortable with it, DON'T POST IT. It's hate speech and racist either way, even if target is the majority race.

Whites are stll the majority because minority isn't a race. There are still more whites in the country than any other group.
