Why Is NBC L.A. Phasing Out Its Latino Reporters?

Ana Garcia: 6 p.m. golden girl, no more.
A cross lettersent to KNBC President and General Manager Craig Robinson by the California Chicano News Media Association yesterday points to a strange trend, given L.A.'s booming Latino population: Five Latino news anchors working for Channel 4 have been demoted in the past year-and-a-half.

It's a mirror image of the Latino exodus of 1994, when five reporters were dropped from the station all at once, and KNBC "was accused of bias against Latino journalists," writes Julio Morán, CCNMA director. While only one of the five is actually gone this time (Pablo Pierera), Morán wants to know why the rest were pulled from prime time:

"Removing Ana Garcia as an anchor on your 6 p.m. newscast was bad enough, but your station has also removed Latino anchors form your midday show (Kim Baldonado) and from weekend evenings (Andy Adler and [Mekahlo Medina])."

(In remembrance of Garcia's glory days, an oldie but a goodie: "Hollywood Party Buses Gone Wild: The Ana Garcia Crackdown.")

Morán says he's worried this might be part of a larger trend, on top of the mass layoffs raiding news networks -- and print papers like the Times -- of their higher-paid veteran talent.

"We had been making gains as a community, but this recession has served as an excuse for a lot of media companies to retreat on diversity," says Morán.

"All of the stations could do a better job in terms of hiring and promotion," he adds. "But the issue here is [KNBC] had people, Latinos, in positions, and then removed them off air."

In response, Morán says NBC's Robinson has told him the re-assignments were not intentional, and reaffirmed his commitment to diversity. (Ironically, as noted by LA Observed, Robinson, who's half-black and half-Chinese, is about to leave his post at KNBC for a job as chief diversity officer for all NBC.)

"Television is a difficult medium because it is so subjective," says Morán. Generally, in the world of print journalism, higher-ups have to proactively issue layoffs, and for specific reasons. "But with a personal-service contract, if they choose not to renew it, i dont know how much recourse there is," he says.

So what's the harm of a more whitewashed 5 p.m./6 p.m. news hour?

"It's just good business," says Morán. "If these stations want people to watch their newscast, they need to put people on there who look like the viewers. ... On-air people serve as role models. Kids think, 'If Laura Diaz can make it, I can make it as well."

Better yet, KNBC -- do like Marvel Comics and find yourself some hard-hitting blacktinos to fill the top spots. No, but for real. Not cool. We want Garcia back.

Wow I'm from NY and I still miss Lucy Noland - she was the ch 5 Good Day NY news woman on the morning show - which was nauseating. Jody Applegate and some other douche were the hosts. I would actually wake up early just to catch Lucy - she's a doll. Are you guys complaining b/c they got rid of a latin woman - geez who gives a $%#@ - Lucy's a sweetheat - we still email about My Yankees & Giants.

I thought I was the only one disappointed with Ana Garcia gone & replaced by this Lucy woman. This Lucy seems to upset many viewers like me. First impression was that Lucy turned me off.  Management  don't seem to have a pulse on the viewers. Yep, I switched to ABC channel 7 myself. I hope management brings back Ana but I doubt it. I moved out of state for a while but now that I'm back, whatever happen to Michele Ruiz (I think that was her name), what a couple of cuties (I must confess, I think I watch NBC for their female cuties & I'm sure I'm not alone)

The tension between Lucy Noland and Colleen Williams screams from the set.  Lucy seems to constantly cut ALL the other anchors off and interupt them.  Earlier this week she made a comment to Chuck that he should not interrupt her when it was the camerman's fault for not having the camera on Lucy.  Chill Lucy chill.  And what's with the arm postures (always on the hips); we get it - you are in command.  Please, you and Vickie should not ruin a great team just because you can.

Send Lucy home, she creates unease with the other anchors.  The unease is very obvious and is not something I care to watch. Bring back Anna back as she makes a great pairing with Colleen, Chuck, Fritz and Fred.  You have  screwed up a great news team.  A "young pretty face" replacing seasoned professionals on NBC news is taking the same path as the other news stations.  Plastics faces, breasts, just plastic reporting.

Put Ana Garcia back on. I am pure white and love her. You have done a great diservice to yourself and the public taking her off the station.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were away for a few months and came back only to find that part of our favorite news team was missing! Please bring Ana back. She was quality and very special to listen to. Why would that kind of decision to let her go possibly be necessary! I think you've lost another viewer for the nightly news as we do miss her. She and Chuck were a very good news anchor team.

shame on you if you got rid of Ana Garcia! She is the main reason for watching NBC news, along with Chuck Henry- and if you eliminated her because she is Hispanic, double shame of you! I hope you have sense enough to get her back, if she'll have you- the other people are just talking heads, not reporters- she is a real person, with real opinions and some real experience in life - the new girl may have that in 10 years, but not yet.

I miss Ana and hope this was only a dollars decision. I miss her and she deserved more from KNBC. Bring her back or I will be watching channel 7 as I used to

What did you do with Ana Garcia?  I could not believe that she was replaced.  She had so much enthusiam and made listening to the news enjoyable,  My family will really miss her.  I guess I will watch for her on another channel.  I wish her well....

Since Ana is not on the anchor team anymore, I've switched to KABC 7.

I can't believe  Channel 4 can run an ad campaign with reporterstalking aba connecting with the news team and the community at large and get rid of a core personality like Ana. She brought a great lighthearted personality and class to the News. She and Chuck were great together. How stupid is the management to be so short sighted. I have lots of choices to watch the news but I loved how real (or silly) it was with lovely Ana. I have switched channels!

Only reason i watched channel 4 news was Ana.  Have gone to channel 7 now.  Chuck Henry too stiff and propper.   Ana was funny.  Her and the older lady that has been there for decadeswere best when they did the news together..  loose and off the cuff.

You phase them out when they're not effective. On the other hand the replacements are pretty terrible. Very animated delivery with too many hand gestures. Almost like watching regis and the ripa chick delivering the news. And why do we need to know what the weather will be every 5 minues.

Is it the Asian or the implants? Really, who cares who reads the teleprompter, just read and be over with. Making celebrities out of overpaid newsreaders just ridiculous. Another thing, I don't think Laura Diaz got there without her implants.

Trends come and go, just like assigning ethnic reporters to report in ethnic neighborhoods. It always seemed awkward watching a never-used Lithuanian reporter covering a Lithuanian story or a Cambodian reporter covering a Cambodian story with overly-dramatic ethnic accents. What was the point in all this?

the assumption is everyone is only comfortable with their own kind.

Ana was the main reason I watched the 6 pm news daily. She brings a seriousness to the news - a good balance to Chuck Henry. She has brought some excellent stories to the public. I think its also interesting that Ana's replacement is "younger" looking while the broadcast so far, has suffered.

My husband and I both agree. We miss the mix of Ana Coleen and Chuck. Bring Ana back

I definitely agree.  As much as my wife and I like Chuck and Colleen, we don't watch Channel 4 news as much anymore.  Chuck, Colleen and Ana were the perfect team.  The chemistry is no longer there.
